Often customers ask for a light bass. With the lightest alder I can find we can reach 3.8 kg or 3.9 kg. If you want a lighter bass, then we need to look for different body wood. That's what this vid is about.
I have built 3 identical basses, same specs and parts, except for body wood. All basses have a maple neck with ziricote fingerboard and Aguilar pickup. The body wood is alder, abachi and cedar. The idea was that since all other specs are the same, the sound difference must be due to body wood.
This video gives you an impression of how much influence body wood has in the total sound. It's meant to help you decide whether you think lighter wood means a departure from traditional P tone, and how much departure, and if you think it's worth it for you or not. As a guitar maker I want happy customers, and hopefully this will help you choose the desired weight and tone.
I personally like the blue one most, and it's also the lightest one. Check it out. You best use headphones!
