As much as I enjoyed this wonderfully performed and recorded clip, I feel obliged to seize this opportunity to demand that we somehow manage to unearth or if necessary even create more meaningful music like this that exploits the full capacity of the seven string viol. In the meantime, DeMachy's tops. Merci beaucoup. Play it again, Sam ... and next time the entire suite please!

Absolutely superb! Makes me want to get a 7 string. I studied with Wendy Gillespie at IU. I have a group of 6 viols in Alabama - believe it or not.

Quelle musique et quel instrument...Et joué avec une telle sensibilité. Comme j'aimerais être à votre place Myriam et tirer de ces cordes ces sons divins qui résonnent du grave le plus profond et s'élèvent parfois dans des aigus insoupçonnés.

Incredible! I've never seen someone play the viol this good. She plays with this witheld intensity, calmness and balance yet she is very expressive and has technical prowess. What an all around great player she is!

Really well executed - she's in full control of this instrument, and able to focus on the exquisite, intimate music. Personal preference: While the space has a nice ambiance, I wish the room reflections made up a slightly smaller portion of the audio - imho it's just on the verge of smearing things. Like: either a slightly closer mic-ing; or if there are two mics, then tilt the mix slightly more in favour of the closer mic. But I'm just a geek going off-topic; the performance is terrific.

@ logatome question was, does the player of those beautiful sounds use gut strings? Yes! Partly metal covered The composer of the second piece is notorious for adding the low 7th string & making it playable with the extra layer of metal of whatever kind. The cited source is by a musician Jean Rousseau, you can look up the rumeur as a footnote in the French wikipedia article about M. de Ste Colombe. De Machy, the composer of the first piece, obviously hated Ste Colombe and his innovations. At times he felt tempted to make use and ridicoule the innovation, when Myriam Rignol touches the low strings!
