One of the most talented, influential, and iconoclastic filmmakers of all time, Brian De Palma's career started in the 60s and has included such acclaimed and diverse films as Carrie, Dressed to Kill, Blow Out, Scarface, The Untouchables, Carlito's Way, and Mission: Impossible. In this lively, illuminating and unexpectedly moving documentary, directors Noah Baumbach and Jake Paltrow engage in a personal and candid discussion with De Palma, exploring not only his life and work but also his singular approach to the craft of filmmaking and his remarkable experiences navigating the film business, from his early days as the bad boy of New Hollywood to his more recent years as a respected veteran of the field. In the end, what emerges is a funny, honest, and incisive portrait of a truly one-of-a-kind artist, and an exhilarating behind-the-scenes look at the last 50 years of the film industry through the eyes of someone who has truly seen it all.

"Carlito's Way" has always been my favorite De Palma movie. Also one of the best scores of all time.

It was shot over a few days and DePlama just wore the same clothes every day so that if they needed to cut things from different days together it wouldn't be jarring.

I seen Phantom of Paradise at the drive-in along time ago and watched it on television still holds up today.

The film was shot in more than one day-they apparently had thirty hours worth of interviews they had to pare down to just under two hours. I was really hoping the DVD would have some additional conversations that didn't make the final cut, but no such luck.

Underrated director

Kevin Schrooders Pretty ironic considering a good number of his movies are iconic pieces of pop culture.

Ben Mankiewicz you are not worthy. "Link to important filmakers of the 70s" ??!!! Read Pauline Kael and open your eyes ! Carrie, Blow Out, Sisters, Carlitos Way, Casualties of War, Body Double, The Fury, Dressed to Kill, Passion, Raising Cain, Snake Eyes & Scarface. His films are dreams within dreams.

James Lipton's Actors Studio, Robert Rodriguez in his Director's Chair series, Hollywood Reporter during Oscar season, Sam Jones' Off Camera series, and even Ben Markowitz here on WhatTheFlick have dabbled into interviewing directors on TV. Nice to see that trend morph into movie form.

De Palma is one of those directors who you rarely hear anyone speak ill of, regardless of his failures.

Much like the highly idiosyncratic Werner Herzog, or Terry Gilliam.

Chris Wright Gilliam's my personal favorite director of all time. You'll NEVER hear me say anything negative about him :)

***** What are your favorites by Gilliam? Everyone talks about Brazil already so we can probably skip that one.

Thanks WTF I can't wait to see this. Not a huge Depalma fan, but I love learning about interesting directors. Thanks for reviewing this.

The only film I really like from his is "The Untouchables." Everything else borders as a ripoff of Alfred Hitchcock. Still...I also will watch this because it focuses on his process.

Yeah when you read the synopsis of Blow Out on Wikipedia as I did last night, you're led to conclude that it's basically Vertigo 2.0

De Palma comes up often on the Bret Easton Ellis podcast so I figure there must be something substantive to his movies, even if I personally haven't been all that impressed so far.

I had much the same reaction. The first time, I thought "what a ridiculous twist!" and then several years later came back to it and it really grew on me. You kind of have to just realize that it's not a film that's dealing with reality in any way-it's entirely about film noir movies, which aren't known for their logic, generally.

Check out the season finale of season two of the Bret Easton Ellis podcast, where Quentin does just that. It's from last December, when The Hateful Eight came out. There's also a sit-down with Ben right here on What The Flick's main page.
