It's an at-least yearly thing for me, usually when Scientology pops up in the news (thanks, linkin park) and i need to find some funny in all the awful crap.

I honestly can't believe how well Andy Daly plays this character. The best parodies don't copy a person exactly. They take their most ridiculous attributes to the extreme. Andy does this perfectly. I don't know if he did a tonne of research or what but he seems to know so much about Hubbard too! I really hope the likes of Chris Shelton and Aaron Smith-Levin listen to this one day.

At 1:25:14 L Ron Hubbard reveals he's been in charge of the QArmy all along, presumably alongside JFK Jr.

The way Andy and Paul play off each other is brilliant; not to mention the *research* Andy did.

Once you start researching L. Ron Hubbard you simply can't stop. He was jaw-droppingly bonkers. And audacious.

Hearing how "Excalibur" drove people to jump out of a nearby window makes me think... I wonder if Hubbard was at any point overcome with the urge to throw himself through a window or multiple windows while writing it.

This is a master class from Andy Daly on how to mix truth and fiction into something absolutely hilarious. I love PFT, but he dropped the ball twice and broke character. First when he talked about Forrest J Ackerman and totally lost all of his commitment when he mumbled "and now curates monster movie props" to dead silence, when it could have been a big laugh if he stayed committed. The other part was when L Ron said being gay is weird (and it is, sorry, so is being left handed like me, so don't freak out ) and PFT in character as a guy from the 1800s says being gay isn't weird, come on.
@TheAwnman
@TheAwnman 2 года назад
In PFT's defence on the gay thing, HG Wells was famously libertine regarding sex and relationships, firmly believing that monogamy was unnatural, in the equality of women and men in social and sexual spheres and so forth, so the idea that a H.G Wells that had spent any time in the modern era would consider homosexuality normal, is not unreasonable. I know that wasn't the actual reason for the reaction and it probably was just modern sensibilities reasserting themselves but as I say it's not actually totally out of character. But you are absolutely right on the Ackerman line, unfortunately I think he just lost the thread of the sentence half-way through and rather than push through just let it fizzle out. I also think while yes a master class by Daly on truth and fiction and the benefits of going big in improv, I think the way PFT asks follow-ups on things like "Do you remember the crash on Venus that broke your back?" or "Was there a ceremony in making you a Condor Scout?" are great questions in that they show trust in Daly to be able to work with them as prompts and expand on them in very funny moments, that would have been lost if they were allowed to be just skipped over.

After decades of PFT's improv tyranny, we common people have finally been provided with the incisive tool necessary to bring down his reign of terror: the nitpicking critique of some jackass on the internet.

@@TheAwnman that's very interesting, although I've read most of his books, I can't say that I know anything about HG the man. I'll definitely read more about him. - ok, he was a socialist, so I can appreciate the art, but despise the artist. 😊
