I had the same problem and all I did was vacuum the sand once a week and the after a month or two the dinos disappeared. boy was I happy. No more vacuuming the sand.
I have a large Derasa clam that I used to house a Neon Goby with and after 2 months I noticed the goby was sitting on the clam a lot but thought nothing of it. A couple of weeks later I noticed the mantle was losing colour where the Goby was sitting and I noticed he was actually nibbling the clam there and the mantle started to retract in that area so I removed the Goby and the colour returned to that area of the mantle and the clam was been growing well ever since. So in summary I would be cautious and make an effort to observe the goby when he us on the clam to make sure he isnt nibbling it. Keep up the great content!
I too had a brief batch of dino appear. Two days lights off but no blackout. During that time I dosed nitrogen and phosphorus to bump up the nutrients. I put a filter sock on it. I'm running bare bottom so my results are going to be different than yours. I still have dino but it's dropped off significantly. I'm now dosing with an auto-doser 6 times a day. I setup a algae scrubber last night and bumped up dosing even higher to get it to pickup faster. Blackouts hurt my corals during low/no nutrients more than the Dino did. Good luck!
Great video I am going through the same thing but I’m using Dr. Tim’s refresh and waste away it’s been a long process but I hope we beat it happy New Year’s and God bless 🙏🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾
I've meant to ask in the past on what app it is that you use to keep your records, or any others you have tried in the past that are worth while. I write mine down, but it would definitely be nice to have a program and software that meshed well as I'm trying to get better about testing more, especially since I've got all these test kits. Seems silly to not use them 🙄
I switched to HW and hate it....problems ever since I switched ...huge alk spikes using it...gone back to trusty instant ocean reef crystals....not just the alk spikes but I started getting algaes I've never had in my system...I think it made all kinds of stuff go outta wack on my tank...
The clam will be fine, in the wild divers have seen entire schools of tiny fish swimming inside giant Gigas clams, swimming in and out of the siphon and slit. My two clowns host on my squamosa. Just make sure the goby doesnt start picking at the clam
@@InappropriateReefer Yeah its kinda funny, you wouldn’t expect to look through the intake slit of a giant clam and see 30 or so fish just swimming around inside😂, your clam might be a little bugged by it at first, but eventually it should get used to the goby sitting on it, my squamosa was a little mad for a couple days but eventually opened up to the clowns, hope your goby loves it’s new home!👍
I know you have anthias and they need to be fed daily. But pellet food is a phosphate bomb! Would suggest just getting your anthias on a diet when you feed the tank frozen food.
Why don't you temporarily turn this tank into a bare-bottom tank. Take all the substrate and put it in a dark place for like a month. Then after the dino dies off, put it back in your tank.
I was also having the same exact problem you were with you euphyllia. I got some hammers in and about 2 days later one of them started to peel and it peeled pretty badly. Later today I’m definitely going to move my hammers to a much lower flow area.
@@InappropriateReefer That's awesome, you'll have to visit again during non pandemic times. Really amazing grounds and places to explore, gators laying out in the sun etc. Glad you enjoyed your visit!
I don't understand dumping a bunch of chemicals into the tank to remove certain unwanted algae... Keep the parameters stable and do large water changes. How do you think people kept reef tanks before all these "fix it" additives came out?
I have only done freshwater for about 12 years last week during the night my only filter died! I didn't find out until the morning and by then my tank had gone into a downward spiral! I lost half my fish then due to a bacterial bloom for some reason half my plants died! I was so upset and still am! I basically had to start it over like a brand new tank, at least I didn't lose all my fish, losing my plants is annoying and a hit to the wallet but, I cried scooping out my dead fish friends!
This is so funny. I just completed a 3-day blackout on my tank and I remember back to when you did a blackout on your tank awhile back - possibly your first time doing a blackout?
This VLOG should be more about what not to do then what to do because clearly the methods here don't work. IMO the biggest mistakes made with this tank are simple. Moving to fast, Over-feeding and lack of regular water changes. All these problems are good for content creation though.
2 items:1) I have seen on the Net pictures of clown fish actually inside the clam's cavity. And 2) where was that you stayed in the cabooses?BTW,the part of the caboose you climbed up into is called the cupola. That is where the conductor or brakeman sits to keep an eye on the rest of the train and track. Doc BC
If anyone is having issues with algae or bacteria breakout remember a very simple basic rule. Ambient/natural light. Not good. Check that. I had issues and I blacked out the window. All good now.
Do you run filter socks? I’d consider them and change em out every 2 days or ideally 1 day if you can and for your nutrient levels I’d recommend dosing some Red Sea nopox I would dose 1ml per 25 gal for approx .02 phosphate reduction in nutrients How much flow are you running in your tank?50x turn over rate would be an ideal amount to keep food from settling and polluting up your tank further hope this helps you get your tank back up healthy and happy
Hey, will it be fine for me to get a dead coral from the market ( deco for my fish tank) ???? I am just worry that this might cause more people to harm the corals in the sea..
Just get yourself a pair of long tweezers for the starfish.Don’t be lazy. Ha ha. Use Rowaphos for your phosphates.Just let it flow really slow out of your reactor. Change it out once a month. That stuff is the best trust me.
@inappropriatereefer Dude... The problem with Black outs is when stuff that requires light dies where do you think the die off nutrients go? If you don't have any nutrient uptake from the photosynthetic organisms or high export of this nutrient it becomes a nutrient soup. I've seen some dinos in the past I just add Hydrogen peroxide dosage to attempt to raise the ORP. Then again my NO3 is only between 5-10 ppm and PO4 is between 0.03-0.8ppm. I've been dosing Nitrates to maintain the range and dripping LaCL to maintain PO4 at a component level.
That's why I always have a generator standing by I don't have to worry if the power goes out for 2 3 4 5 days in Florida here we get a lot of power outages in the summertime and I always have a generator standing by
Happy new year! Up to a better one! Just a thought.. and definitely not a super easy one.. But maybe if u would siphon +-1/2 inch of the top sand bed out and collect the sand in some cind of temporary container/s with the same footprint of the tank so u still have a layer of 1/2 inch of sand in there. And connect it to your sump so it has the same water and your tank does not get a mayor biologically shock. And than give the container a looong blackout so all the dinos die and the bacteria can take over.. And than put it back in the tank again covering everything in a layer of dinofree bacteria rich sand.. Not really something I have ever done tho... But it just might work :) Good luck with your battle
I’ve had dinos twice and both times I beat it with vibrant first time was on my 75 gallon and I tried black out, higher and lower nutrients, manual removal, and uv with no luck as a last resort I tried vibrant and after 4 weeks it was gone I did have a cyano spike after the dinos died which I fixed with some chemiclean the second time was in my 125 and I already had a bottle of vibrant as soon as I noticed it starting I dosed the vibrant and 2 weeks later it was gone but just like the first time I had the cyano outbreak I’m assuming it’s from the dino die off but a single dose of chemiclean fixed it up also need to note I had no fish or coral loss either time hope it helps and good luck
Is that red caboose in PA? What else you can do there? I think stop chasing the Nitrate and PO4 now...keep in safe level but don't wipe them off so you can provide foods for algae to compete with Dino
What about introducing some macro algae to the spots where the dinoflaglets thrive? Macro algae will compete with them by light and consuming trace elements. There is a chemical warfare between algae also.
I read that some people place chaeto directly on top of dino for this purpose. It may be tough for me to secure the macro right on those spots (especially since it's most of my sand bed); maybe I will tie some to a rock and place it over a spot as a test. Thank you for the idea!
Hey, the way i got rid of dynos, cyano and green hair algea was just to stop water changes. I tried everyhthing before, blackouts , microbacter7, vibrant , nopox etc. After i stopped water changes my whole system balanced out. No more issues.
RU-vidr MileHighReefer had/has a pair of clown fish hosting in his clam so that is one example showing clams can get used to fish nearby. Have a great and healthy upcoming year.
I don't recommend the 3 day black out, just have your lights on for 6 hours and blue light, with radions its easy to adjust, then what I would do is raise the temperature inside the tank to 82 degrees. You will notice a major difference overnight. Every time I started a tank using any dry rock, eventually after 6-8 months I would get dinos. Raising the water temp and keeping it at 82 for a couple of days, works for me. I had dinos that wouldn't disappear at night, always on the sand bed and rock.
I have slowly walked the temp up to 80.5 degree at the moment, will gradually walk it up to 82. Very interested to see if this works since quite a few people recommended this. Thanks!
Hi! I just wanted to let you know that i've used that very same snailguard on my vortechs! And the fact that they VERY much and drastically reduce flow. I'm not sure if that matters to you but I may as well let you know!
Thanks for the heads up! That may be OK in this tank since they are still running at 25% and 55%; have you noticed any change in flow pattern? That's my main concern with these 3D printed guards... 🤔
I vouch for this method as well. It may not work on all types of dinoflagellates (mine were Ostreopsis) but it was very effective in my case. I tried just about everything (including multiple blackouts, DinoX, and dosing peroxide) and nothing worked. Finally I tried raising the temperature to 82.5° and after a week the dinos were 100% eliminated. This article has some good information. reefbuilders.com/2020/05/11/dinoflagellate-aquarium-treatment/
