I'm from this area. Pittsburgh Mills was an out of the way mall that nobody wanted. They literally blasted entire foothills to level the area for this thing. There's nothing around it for miles except for dying ex-steel towns. It never had a chance. I worked for a sign company that did most of the signage at the mall. One of the first businesses to abandon the mall was a bowling alley. They actually had us take down their signs in the middle of the night, without warning to the mall. They just left.

As of January 2018 about 1/2 of the stores and the skyzone that were open in this video are now closed. The Mall sold for $100 at a bankruptcy auction but remains open. An addition of a Joann Fabrics last year with no interior mall entrance has really made Pittsburgh Mills the place to be. There is one business that was recently thriving judging from the multiple sex trafficking busts in the parking lot.

This looks very, very similar to the Ontario Mills in Ontario, CA which was opened in the 90's sometime. Of course it's still going strong, most of the stores in that mall are outlet stores...that's why it's thriving plus there are so many people here in Southern California. But it's set up the same way - it might have the same developers. Love your channel!!!

Rich Kocon wow that quick. Was it the "we have 3 malls but let's build another one just because we can" scenario? And I am looking forward to the Detroit video. If it is anywhere near Rolling Acres like he said it is I am stoked. I have a strange fascination with the Acres. possibly it's the fact it's as half hour drive down I-77 for me.

"Rat Shack" is now a collection of Sprint cellphone stores unless the place is a franchise; then they are a cellphone store that also is burning off Realistic-brand merchandise.

To answer your question on Sears Grand...It was a test concept for Sears to try to compete with Wal-Mart. It had a small mixture of food,cleaners, greeting cards,candy and other items in addition to the regular Sears mix of goods. I believe there were only about 8 that actually were in existence before the whole idea was scrapped and most were either closed or converted to regular Sears stores. This particular one remained open, with alot of the extra items removed and transformed back into a regular Sears. Zamias took full ownership of this mall after the Mills corporation went bankrupt. Once they took over, like many other Zamias properties, it slowly but surely went on a downward spiral, much like our local Zamias mall in Indiana,Pa. Hopefully a miracle will happen and save the Mills, It is the most interesting and beautifully crafted mall in the Pittsburgh region. BTW, really enjoy your videos, keep up the good work!

todd East suburban Pittsburgh is full of old retired people. They are gradually passing away. Young people who go to college in Pittsburgh either move in to the city or to other growth cities..I.e. Dallas, Atlanta, Nashville, Charlotte, Houston, Denver, Seattle, NYC, Washington DC area, Arizona etc..

It looks really nice? You should see what they did in my city... or actually outside my city in the middle of nowhere! They built an Outlet mall called the Outlets at Corpus Christi Bay which is not in CC and at least 20 miles from the bay. Its been dead since its (not so) grand opening. Everything about the place is backwards including the high prices. Makes Pittsburgh Mills look booming! I think the most our outlet ever had was 12 stores? Now down to 6 or 7.

We are down to 2 big malls in the Austin, Texas area. We have a third mall that is a walking/outdoor mall that is all designer goods, LV, Prada,etc. this mall is about 8 years old and doing very well. The 2 outlet malls in Round Rock and in San Marcos are building on new wings constantly. Today, I was at the mall and saw 2 vacant store fronts. We have a lot of service industries moving into the mall- Castle Dental, a spa, hairdressers, etc...

Another great mall walkthrough video! For whatever reason, it's very rare to see Panera Bread inside a mall. The only mall I'd ever seen a Panera inside of myself, is the still pretty successful Fox Valley Mall in Aurora, IL. Maybe it isn't as rare, as I think that usually is? Hopefully, you also have Saint Louis Mills on your to visit list of malls in Missouri. I'm not sure if that's been renamed(I suspect it might, forget the new name), but it's struggling like this mall. Hard to believe this only opened in 2005, not many malls opened during the 2000s I believe. Cheers,to how great all your struggling and dead mall walkthrough videos have been!

It's because there are literally too many places to shop! Period! Just like there are too many chain restaurants everywhere, too many big-box stores, too many fast-food joints! There are literally too many stores and nobody has enough disposable income to buy things anymore! It's not 1985 where everybody was buying a BMW or a Volvo and buying leg-warmers and SONY Trinitron television sets! People are struggling, and it's high time for corporations to develop new strategies for consolidation, otherwise brick-and-mortar retail as we know it is going to be dead within 25 years, and UPS and FedEx trucks are going to be clogging our streets because everyone's gonna order everything online and have it delivered to our homes!
@exkelsior1486
@exkelsior1486 8 лет назад
So true! I think it's a bit off base and irresponsible for some of these stores to point the finger at online shoppers. There are still plenty of people that are way more comfortable with just going to the store and trying something on than going through the trouble of waiting on shipping and exchanging online. I'm sure it contributes, but the excesses of pre 2010 is long dead
@exkelsior1486
@exkelsior1486 7 лет назад
For me, the difference is also the variety found online over big mall stores. There are those chains in practically every mall that are owned by the same company and seem to produce almost identical products in each store. If I don't like something the trends of that season, if i go online I can usually find something more unique or in a style I actually like.

Raoul Radio Pfff amazon still sucks I'd rather deal with lousy customer service than being or worry about ripped off. And it was just a lot more helpful to go and try things on in a store some clothing styles and company's aren't correct on clothing sizes so there's that. Also as much as I do get the prime thing, unless it's someone's bithday or Christmas why just wait one day or more waiting on my front porch (got to weary of people stealing packages also) for that item? I can just go to the store and buy it! And another thing some things on amazon are a lot more expensive than in stores like I was looking for ribbon they wanted almost 6 DOLLARS for a roll that was only like 3 feet and that's not even including shipping. I could get five damn rolls for that price at hobby lobby bigger rolls even. Prime may make things cheap but compared to what was sold in stores a bit too much.

This mall was dead from the first day it opened. In an effort to have full occupancy on opening day they put in a lot of garbage tenants - like the local raceway had a storefront, several car dealerships had cars parked in the storefronts, TONs of dollar stores. It didn't take long for shoppers to know it wasn't worth your time to shop here. Many retailers left as soon as their first lease was up - further contributing to the downward spiral. The developers hedged their bets though and built several Strip Malls just outside this mall - They are doing well while this mall is going dim. Anchors like TJ Maxx, Marshalls and other retailers who can be found in other "Mills" concept locations did their demographic homework and stayed away from this mall. Sears was already in decline when they built the "Sears Grand" concept store - a monster of a store that offered little more than a standard Sears mall store. It was one of only 10 Sears Grand locations built across the country as a one-stop shopping outlet. Teenie boppers swarmed to the movie theater here on weekends and summer nights - without the theater this mall would have died a faster death. This mall was built even though other local malls like Century III Mall, Parkway Center Mall and Village Square were already on life support. It won't be long now before this one joins the list.

This mall first opened when I was seven within 3 miles of me, in the beginning, there were crowds of people and they even had a strawberry shortcake concert in that exact same food court. Also right next to the spencers they had autograph signings with the survivor winners, I have a picture of it somewhere. I spent so much time there just walking around in circles there, also the odd thing about mentioning that Starbucks in the mall well there was another Starbucks withing 5 minutes of walking distance. The only thing causing people to go there now is the movie theater, it gets updated often and even has those d box seats built in. Hopefully, the movie theater never leaves, because by then there's no reason to go inside there and I'm left with going to Monroeville for a decent movie experience

Sears Grand was as you described, typical Sears with a grocery store. The front by the mini golf with the checkered flags was originally supposed to be an outdoor go-kart track that never came to fruition, and the closed front across from minigolf was a Dingbats restaurant that closed ~5 years ago. There was also a Johnny Rocket's next to the Houlihans.

The problem with shopping malls and brick-and-mortar stores is a vicious cycle. They can't afford to keep the inventory and selection of items that can be found online. Because the stuff would be sitting around too long. So then people buy even more things online. It just keeps getting worse.

Yes most in the 5 County Pittsburgh area say they are from Pittsburgh but the city itself is is only about 15% of the population and area. Outside Pittsburgh it's a few hundred small townships and boroughs. Large developments like this can overwhelm a small local government.

Sears Grands were essentially Super Kmarts. The original plan after Kmart bought Sears was to convert all the Kmarts to either Sears Grand or Sears Essentials for a uniform branding -- they started doing this around the time this mall opened. This turned down many customers however because they thought Sears Grand/Essentials was a more upscale and expensive version of Kmart (which it wasn't), so most wound up being converted back to Kmarts or closed altogether.

Oh man, I remember that mall from when I lived in Pittsburgh in my late teens (19 or so). I lived in the more urban area of the county, but I remember that so many people in my neck of the woods would make the trip way out into the sticks to this mall for whatever reason. Every time I visited this mall, it just got worse and worse. I hate to say it, but even the Monroeville Mall where they filmed the original Dawn of The Dead is hitting a rough spot and may end up like this place. Pittsburgh on the other hand is prospering yet again and making tremendous strides, so the loss of a few malls is not the end the city fortunately.

Yup, Sears Grand was Sears trying to adopt to a changing economy where Super Target and Walmart Super Center's reigned supreme, they had a dry good grocery selection and were more of a mashup of a party store, pet supply store and hardware store all merged under one roof with the traditional Sears offering. After Kmart acquired Sears, many of the Kmart Supercenter stores rebranded under the Sears Grand format name. Love your videos, so fascinated with dead malls and what kills them. North Hanover Mall in Hanover PA is a dead mall in the making, its anchors are the only thing keeping it afloat...all the little mom & pop stores have gone... in their place you can find cars from the nearby car dealership on display just to keep the storefronts from looking too bleak

Great vid! Sears Grand was a concept begun under Sears' last independent CEO who tried to take the company into more of a discounter direction. The stores were all new builds and featured traditional Sears lines plus new ones such as Health & Beauty, Consumables, Toys, Books & Magazines, limited Grocery and Pharmacy amongst others. (He often joked that only at Sears Grand could one purchase a refrigerator and a gallon of milk to put in it). While the original Grand stores were successful in the beginning, the merger with Kmart ultimately doomed Sears who now has management that doesn't care about saving the company. Other Grand stores were opened in converted Kmart locations but it isn't the same, the original Grands (Gurnee, IL, West Jordan, UT, Las Vegas, NV to name a few) were huge newly built stores, to which a dingy 40 year old Kmart can't compare. Ultimately, Sears Grand could have been the vehicle that saved the company but was sadly cut short by the merger.

Hardly. What pushes a property into foreclosure, and what happens at foreclosure is all spelled out in contracts and the law. The reason that no buyer bid on the mall is that there is risk associated with the property, and no buyer wanted to assume that risk. With no buyer, the $100 that WF paid was probably just a filing fee to revert ownership to them.

I can remember the stores that are at the Grand Outlets at Saiger all day, but, here they are: The blue and yellow store is Westworld, and formerly Fitness Equipment and Supplies. The topical store is Next Clearance, formerly Next to Nothing and also N-E-X-T. The green triangles store is Camille Lingerie, and formerly Duxia. One of the curved stores is Antler Outlet, and formerly Cia-Dix. This store looks like a Forever 21 but it actually used to be The Designer Room, and before that Yorkshire Fashion Depot. This store is actually Claire’s Outlet, and FastLooks before that. The store with the sale thing is Klass, and formerly Kaylina Clearance. The curtained store is Roman Originals, and formerly Hay. The blue store is Hallmark Cards. The army store is Bags Etc, and formerly Bags Extra. The lime store is Game, and formerly Rainbow Games. Another curved store is Pilot. The little seen store is Monsoon. The counter store is Baskin Robbins, and formerly Ice Cream at Cookie Jar. The walled off store is Le Creuset, formerly Bed and Bath Works, and also Systemos. The flowers store is Tog24, and formerly Zeino. 3 of the shopfronts are merged into The Sony Centre (The Hive), and formerly Grove. The big store is Gap Outlet, and formerly Outlet World. Another big store is Nike Factory Store. But let’s go down into the Food Court though. There are a lot of restaurants down here. There is a Burger King here, as well as a Spud-u-Like, KFC, Toilets, The Fishery, Subway, News Empire, Watch Pairs, Yangtze, Café Europa, and Little Italy. That wasn’t there when the mall opened, the food court opened in 1998. The light blue store is Marks and Spencer Outlet, and formerly Rouge. The arcade store is Jaeger. The windows store is Billabong, and formerly The Coast. The store next to Child’s Play is Austin Reed. Another walled off store is Origin Outlet Fashions. The white store is Sports Direct, formerly Lillywhites, and also Bix Sports. The store next to be is Crabtree and Evelyn, and formerly Nailsioa. Wow! There’s a info desk here, and near that is the UCI/Odeon cinema. The other blue store is The Works, formerly Book Depot, and also Book’z’. Another curved store is Bedeck, and formerly Linens by Alaneoek. The blue and white store is Reebok. Another curved store is Julian Graves, and formerly The Health Tree. The Beauty Express and black stores are together to form The Beauty Outlet. That is a coke machine. The brown store next to it is Crew Clothing Company, and formerly Clothes Makers. A big store is Orvis. Another counter store is Millie’s Cookies, and formerly Cookie Jar. The yellow-ish store is The Body Shop Depot. The wood store is Ollie’s Burgers. The tile store is The Keinger Inn Pub. The Orange store is Starbucks.

2005? That makes this the newest mall by far of all the ones I've seen in these videos so far, on all the channels I'm subscribed to combined! As for resembling Dan Bell's stuff, that's a good standard to follow. I guess the mall's developers were riding high on the housing bubble euphoria, not realizing that it was in fact a bubble. But I read in a few places that a Speculative Bubble can only be identified after it bursts.

So the mall has the racetrack layout? If you're ever out west in the Phoenix area, we have Arizona Mills in Tempe, a Simon Property. It's an outlet mall, originally, but has non outlet tenants as well. Opened in 1997 with a racetrack layout. They have stores like Neiman Marcus Last Call, Dress Barn, Forever 21, Buckle, H&M, Guess Outlet, Burlington Coat Factory, Game Stop, Disney Store, and the list goes on. Plenty of places to eat like Wetzel's, Rainforest Cafe, and Johnny Rockets. There are a bunch of opening day tenants, though some like the Virgin Megastore, Off Rodeo Drive, and JC Penney Outlet have gone off to the yestermall. Food court was remodeled a few years ago with the clean, modern lines replacing the old theme of the 90s. Seating area is more open and free. Food court is full with Church's Chicken being the best known nameplate. Villa Pizza has been showing up recently in malls including this one. The rest is stuff I've never heard of. The mall doesn't have an anchor presence like a normal mall. The largest stores don't have separate facades, but some do. Harkins has a 24 screen theater and they own the IMAX here. Tilt Studio just opened this week. They got to work FAST on that one after Gameworks left. School buses are often parked by the northeast corner because Sea Life ipenes an aquarium here to much hype several years ago. April was when LEGOland Discovery Center opened. Just look for the bright red and yellow building. This mall gets pretty busy and has very few vacancies. Now about Sears Grand, I visited one that recently opened when I drove up to Salt Lake in 2003, I think. The Grand concept was dropped some time ago, and the Grand stores that were kept were converted to normal Sears, or possibly Kmart. I had heard about the Grand concept because I worked at Sears from 2000-2005. Grand is the Sears version of a Super Walmart. There are 2 entrances with shopping carts. Registers are at the front of the store between entrances. Concessions are at the front, which were the typical Sears offerings of the era: watch and jewelry repair, portrait studio, Miracle Ear. I don't remember if the tux rental was in the store I saw. All departments you found in a normal store were present here. Lawn and Garden had live plants. The store had a grocery area. I would say it's closer to what was added into a normal Target. Typical impulse products sold at the registers. I want to say some aesthetics and fixturing found in the Chandler store, where I worked, was present here. My old store in Chandler, AZ was a prototype. It opened in 2002 at the usually busy Chandler Fashion Center. The look we had at opening was unique to us. The drywall above the top of the slot wall was a different color for each area. The sections of wall that curved outward like a bow had the department name in letters mounted over Chicago area graphics. The floor around the escalators where home decor and housewares were located had a wood look while the floors in the main aisles had alternating bands of black and ivory tiles. Wallpaper on the escalators, as well as the hallways outside of the restrooms and break and training rooms had horizontal light blue and white stripes. Shoes used to have a clearance room. Stockrooms have ladders that slide back and forth on rails. Receiving had a belt to move merchandise between floors instead of using the freight elevator for everything. We had a chain to manually close the mall entrances in a power outage. At the time all stores had the all caps SEARS logo, we had rhe Sears logo. Sears Grand had our Sears logo with grand in red cursive. And bleh. Ty Pennington. Almost everything in his collection was just ugly. A couple of dishes looked ok, but his bedding and bath stuff was just plain ugly. It didn't sell well, and we were in a great market due to all the new construction and higher incomes. The other brands sold better, especially the Whole Home microsuede comforter set we displayed at the mall entrance. I could probably tell you stories all day about working at Sears at the mall!

Arizona Mills is still doing great. Was in there a couple weeks ago and it was packed. Fiesta isn't doing so great, and Superstition is a bit average but still doing ok. Next time I am up there I plan on heading to the west side of town to take a walk through Metrocenter.
@KoubuPilot
@KoubuPilot 8 лет назад
Jason Miller Yeah, Superstition, AZ Mills and Chandler ultimately led to Fiesta losing business. Santan made it worse. Metro is dead. Go into Dillard's Clearance Center if it's open. It's very dated. I have a barrel through on my channel. Sears is the only full anchor. The demolished the old Broadway to build a new Super Walmart. While you're going up I-17, check out what's left of Christown. It's about 1 mile east at Bethany Home and 19th Ave.

Mills Corp. built or renovated malls(at least in the case of Forest Fair Mall, which became Cincinnati Mills, though it no longer goes under this name and went back to the name Forest Fair) primarily have this same 'warehouse' style look with interesting 90s decor, wherever they were built in the U.S. Hadn't yet seen any pictures or videos of Vaughan Mills near Toronto, but I presume it's probably similar in its inside look. Simon bought out Mills Corp. some years back, btw.

Yes, and Vaughan Mills is now owned by "Ivanhoé Cambridge", a Canadian property company. Google Vaughan Mills, hard to get a parking any day of the week, and all outlet stores. I personally hate it!

Pittsburgh Mills is in the middle of nowhere. Rt 28 construction and its location was the downfall. I only went there once when we saw the first Night at the Museum movie. no reason for anyone living in Pittsburgh to drive all the way there

Dead mall? This is the liveliest place you've filmed so far. Compared to most of your videos, the foot traffic in PIttsburgh Mills makes it look like Tysons Corner or King of Prussia. With that said, this mall is heading in the wrong direction with an unhealthy number of vacancies and it continues to lose stores. If we could somehow magically shrink the mall to 2/3 or one half its current size, it would probably be fine. Unfortunately, real estate doesn't work that way and this place is indeed in trouble. It's good to see it being recorded now before it reaches true dead mall territory. Finally, there's way too many dying and dead malls to be covered by any one person. You, Dan, and several others are doing a great job capturing the design and spirit of these places that won't be around 20 plus years from now.

This mall was built in 2001-2002.... in a very isolated area of "pittsburgh". i watched it being built, as i worked field service job through the area, and drove by almost weekly. this mall was junk from the first day. the only good thing was (and i think still is) the movie theater. I wish they would renovate this mall into a convention center of sorts, it has massive space and could hold a fairly large convention. that would be the ideal for it now.

this is sad. i hate seeing things like this happen. when the malls start closing it is like a domino effect. other businesses in the areas around the malls start shutting down. we have alot of malls in new hampshire. i just hope none of those are going anywhere. online shopping is putting alot of the malls out of commission as well. i miss going to the methuen mall in methuen ma. that closed in the late 90s. i used to go there every weekend. and when i had kids, i used to take them there up until the mall became dead than finally closed its doors in '98. it was demolished in '99. the loop is now there. i like the mall because people used to meet there and it was like a comunity and also walking around the malls, you got your excercise in! lol! 😃

Actually, Sears Grand was where they tried to copy off Target and Walmart in a way so to speak, with also selling regular Sears store merchandise as well. They only opened a limited number of those stores, such as at Gurnee Mills Mall. Sears Essentials was rebadged Kmarts getting that name to give off the lol sense of the store being fancier than it really is, such as Elmhurst, IL. That one and all the other Sears Essentials stores, have gone back to being Kmart years ago. Surprisingly, that Kmart in Elmhurst is still open for now!

Malls like this have been declining for years and years. I would dare say that 35% of all malls that have been built in the United States in the last 30 years have lost more than 50% of their businesses. The Moorestown Mall in Burlington County NJ is hoppin'.................the Burlington Center Mall just 12 miles north on Rt. 295 is virtually dead. There are a few other malls around the Philadelphia area (30 - 40 miles in every direction) that have fallen by the wayside.
@nudist0885

ONE WAY that SOME malls could possibly revitalize their businesses is to offer one particular type of service that most malls in the entire world don't offer. And what is that service????? FULL SERVICE health clubs that offer "clothing optional hours" at least 5 hours a day at least 1 day a week every week of the year. "Full service" would include locker rooms, nautilus rooms, exercise courts (handball, volleyball, basketball, tennis), hot tub, cold tub, saunas, steam rooms, an INGROUND INDOOR pool that is at least 100,000 gallons in size. The reason for the indoor pool is so that it can be used even during the middle of winter and late at night when outdoor pools might be too dangerous to use. The reason for the "clothing optional hours" is to permit people to use the health club in ways that MOST health clubs all over the world currently DO NOT PERMIT anyone to use at anytime. By offering clothing optional hours you would be offering a service most health clubs currently don't permit......................by putting this health club in a mall you'd be able to offer the health club patrons the opportunity to do some window shopping while the health is too crowded for everyone to use it at one time.

There was a decent steakhouse where Smokey Bones is NOW. I ate there right after it opened in '06. Smokey Bones is alright too - I ate there once, also. There was SUPPOSED to be a "NASCAR Experience" track as part of the Mall originally, but that fell through. Hard to tell which is more empty these days; this mall, or a typical NASCAR grandstand on raceday... :doh:

one of the major things that killed this mall is that they only wanted to cater to a certain type of person. Pittsburgh does have its mass of affluent people but not the amount this mall would need. The mall refused to allow PortAuthority, the cities public transportation company, to have pick up and stop off points on the property. Event the affluent in individuals in Pittsburgh use public transport excessively due to the shortage of major highway routes and small streets. Pittsburgh, like NewYork and Philadelphia rely on public transport due to the cities infrastructure. This mall didn't take this into account. It's owned by an Ohio based company that knows very little about the dynamic of the city. I lived in the Pittsburgh region for over 27 years and know for a fact no buses, no business. even the cities other high end malls know this rule. The Mills did it to themselves and i really don't understand why they haven't learned there lesson.
