I'm dying! Loved the 80's synth playing against the dead mall background. My terrible secret is that as a child of the 80's, I will always have an affinity for the traditional indoor mall and food court junk food. I pretty much despise the trendier outdoor ones.

I ran inside one store for a hot minute in Atlanta after dinner at a Fogo de Chao but I didn’t get to really look around much. Love the handbags especially the Dooney & Bourke. Very pretty. I am having sushi for lunch today and tonight I am cooking a pasta sauce made from heavily fried onions and zucchinis and herbs. Once fully cooked, pulverise it all and serve over pasta. Your rice turned out beautifully. I cannot tell you how much rice went wrong for me before I bought my first rice cooker. The cheap ones work brilliantly, not need to buy a big fancy model if you are only using it for rice. (The expensive ones are more multi-functional, I believe.) Honestly this was probably one of my most favorite vlogs on your channel so far. I am a dead mall enthusiast and love retail history. I even have a corner in my apartment where I have old Kmart and Montgomery Ward ads on the wall. I also have an old Sears ad from 1923. All of them framed. I call it my “dead mall shrine”. Kmart was particularly special to me as it was my “Disneyland” when I was a kid. Back in the 80s going to Kmart was a magical EXPERIENCE! I remember the Hawthorn mall! I went there a lot because when I lived in Chicagoland - I lived in the next town over from that mall (Buffalo Grove). Even back in 2007, that mall was quite bland. It had Macys, Sears, and Carson Pierie Scott as its anchors. Being from the midwest, I’d recommend you guys watch about the history of the Bon-Ton and all of it’s affiliated stores (Carson Pierie Scott being one of them) if you’re interested. Anyway - the Macy’s at that mall back then was pretty decent - but all in all it was my least favorite of other malls in the Chicagoland area. Is the Barnes and Noble still there? You talking about Zane’s famous Mongolian Beef reminds me of my famous marinated pork tenderloin. I haven’t made it in over a decade, but it involves marinating pork tenderloin in Balsamic vinegar, olive oil (i don’t remember the exact measurements … but then again with cooking, nothing has to be super exact), garlic, and sprigs of rosemary and it is GOOOOD. One of my best dishes and was always a hit with friends. I think I got the recipe originally from “America’s Test Kitchen”.
Hey Ampersann! I love retail history too- that's so cool! And I love the idea of a dead mall corner. I love old advertisements and used to have a couple neat ones when I was younger. And you're so right- KMart back in the day was so much fun and a treat to go to. It was kind of the Target for 80s and 90s kids lol! Yeah the mall wasn't... great... lol. Very okay in my opinion. We had a Carson's back home- it took over after Marshall Fields left (almost 15 years later) and they did the interior in the brightest shade of white, with silver ball chains hanging around the columns with the worlds brightest white lights- it was migraine central haha! I'm not sure about the B&N. The mall overall was very confusing and we kept getting turned around. It was a surreal experience. Your pork tenderloin recipe sounds delicious! Zane won't eat pork, but I might have to make it for myself sometime soon! I hope you're having a great weekend!!

Hi Heather! Me too- bone is such a classic shade of white, I love it! Dying malls really are depressing- I remember how vibrant malls were when I was a kid, but I think the recession in 2008 really sped up the declining health of malls, especially with the ease of online shopping taking off. I can't recommend this mongolian beef recipe enough- it's so good! We don't have an insta pot yet, but I always hear great things about them!

Caleb! The vintage saddle is everything! That pizza looked so damn good. I appreciate the way they cut it too. As for the dead mall, mine is Jersey Gardens. Sometimes you can find some gems and other times it serves as a way to get out and do something when there is nothing else going on.

That was a very sad mall... But the one by my town is probably sadder. Macy's, Kohl's, and JC Penney. That's it! And of course the usual suspects, Hot Topic, Bath and Body Works, etc. Doesn't even have a Gap anymore. There was the world's most depressing Sears, but that finally closed and now it's a supermarket (?!).
I agree- malls are either doing really well- or they look like this one. The whole thing was just strange and depressing. Oh- that mall does sounds sadder ugh! We lost our Gap back home a long time ago- such a shame!

My daughter is vegan... when she's home in a few weeks, I might take you guys up on the challenge to make vegan Mongolian beef. I'm thinking tempeh might be better for texture than tofu for this one.
