I played this game so much back in the day on the 360. I remember the biggest controversy surrounding it was people not being able to read the text on their regular-ass TVs. Punk ass bitches. I also love how the town has a population of 53,000 people and there are probably way more than that at the mall alone. Must have had a sale that day.
@BenDovahkin
@BenDovahkin 2 года назад
That was an issue with most games from that period. The Xbox 360 was a transition console, transitioning to HD TV as a standard. It obviously took multiple years. I remember playing ffxiii and having a very hard time reading the text on screen for that particular reason.

I firmly believe it's an all-time great. From the game's tone to the timer, it's just overflowing with charm and challenge. It's so satisfying to master the ins and outs of the mall.

I always thought that Dead Rising was a Dreamcast game that got put on hold to come out on the 360. It It felt like the last action survival horror game of that era that focused on survival over action. Everything else afterwards that was on 360 and PS3 went for action over survival horror.

Dead Rising was one of the games which really put the X360 on the map. Some people complained a lot about the difficulty but as you've pointed out it plays a lot more like a rogue-lite were you are SUPPOSED to die while retainin your earned levels. The only gripe I still have is that the text font they chose is super tiny and hard to read on anything less than a 50" screen.

Dead Rising was my first game of that gen when I got a 360, and absolutely blew my mind compared to what my PS2 could do. I used to play it for hours and my friends would come over just to watch. Good times.
@JohnDoe-wq5eu
@JohnDoe-wq5eu 3 года назад
It's one of those games that really told you this is straight up next gen. I mean it came out within the first year of the 360's life that's crazy. I mean the PS3/360 was the "HD era" sure but at the same time it was also about pushing way more in terms of graphics than I've ever been possible. Just the sheer amount of zombies on screen is still mind blowing to see, it's been 16 years and I'm still blown away by that.
@louyork8379
@louyork8379 3 года назад
If the 360 blew your mind, the PS3 would have made your whole body explode, as it was the far superior console of the era.
@JohnDoe-wq5eu
@JohnDoe-wq5eu 3 года назад
@@louyork8379 No because the PS3 was way over hyped and way too difficult to get the most out of. Any game that was cross-platform played better typically with a few exceptions on the 360. I owned both consoles early on (though I had the 360 from roughly launch) I enjoyed the exclusives on PS3 but I feel like that's all it had going for it. That said I have a PS3 fat 60gb version that I have to get fixed up so that I can have backwards compatibly with the first three generations of consoles.

DR was one of the first 360 games I bought with my system back in 2006. I am a huge fan of Dawn of the Dead, so picking this game up seemed like a no-brainer. It definitely has its faults like the infuriating survivor AI, sketchy gun play, & some ridiculously cheap boss (psychopath) fights. But there’s so much fun to be had in Dead Riding, despite its flaws. Learning the mall, finding weapons & outfits, & of course dispatching zombies feels great! The fact that the game punishes you with difficulty, but also rewards you the more times you start over and play again is genius. DR 2 is great as well (weapon combos ftw). But I agree a little bit of the magic is lost from DR1. DR3 & 4 are competent zombie games, but fall far from the greatness of DR 1 & 2 imo.

Thank you for this review. I bought Dead Rising in November 2008 during Circuit City's closing. I think I got it for $10. I tried playing it, but my impatient teenage brain couldn't handle the design of being so weak and having to constantly start the game over again from the beginning. I quickly shelved it and went back to my normal cycle of games on the 360. But now 13 years on, I think I'll revisit it again. You've really piqued my interest with this review.

I didn't played dead rising back in the 360 era, picked it up some years ago on the xbox one, and i never played a game which grabbed my attention so hard like it. The "open world" map along with the time always passing and the freedom to explore almost every shop at the mall, grabbing stuff and using them to survive or just have a laugh is awesome. And then, you start to get bored and you realize that there are tons of missions, survivors, bosses and a whole story behind everything, and you only have 3 days, suddently, you realize that the real challenge is doing everything you can before being forced to escape, or die. I loved this game, 10/10. A shame that somehow, this isn't as famous as resident evil or modern horror games.
@mattb9664

I came pretty close to mastering and memorizing Deadrising and I love going back to it every so often. Many people will complain about the controls for the dumb NPCs you have to save, but working around what you are given to work with is part of the fun since it is actually achievable. It gets easier with each play through or attempt, which was one of Capcom's mechanics back then. I have the complete Mega Man suit, which more or less is this game's God mode for faster play throughs.
@Mageman17

I am intimidated by the real time timer and possibly missing survivors, which is why I prefer the mission-based gameplay of the Wii version (that and it saves some of the psychopaths, even if war vet is still in the game as a powerful mook). The janitor WILL tell you before a hostage or a psychopath activity will happen, right? And that there are no missable survivors or events (like events that the janitor will flat out not tell you to incentivize exploring when nothing is seemingly going on)?

The convicts are actually extremely easy as long as you have the right weapons. First thing I always do on my playthroughs is go to the gun store, defeat Cletus, and load up on sniper rifles and shotguns. The convicts each die from only 4-5 sniper shots, so you can easily defeat them on the first day.

This game suffers from the Pikmin syndrome: it gives you a very interesting world to play in but it forces you to rush in order to reach objectives. So you are constantly forced to run instead of experimenting. If the objectives were not timed, this game would be way better. The sandbox is left mostly intact because you are in a hurry constantly.
@NeoTechni
@NeoTechni 3 года назад
The timer makes the game better, it's needed to give you that threat of actual loss/failure that a horror game needs.
@AgentMorgan2010
@AgentMorgan2010 3 года назад
Yeah, I agree with this other user. The timer is needed to keep up the tension and the pacing. The time management is actually a big part of the fun factor in this game, and this is coming from someone who's not a fan of time limits in games. I think this might be the only game where I really feel like it's a good design choice. The game would get boring real quick without it, as was demonstrated by the free play mode without the timer in the sequel. You can try that mode if you just want to simply meander around an open environment full of zombies for eternity. But you can still experiment in the original, if you choose. Just don't save. Then you can take whatever knowledge you acquired with you when you get back to it for real, minding the timer.
@miltiadiskoutsokeras9189
@miltiadiskoutsokeras9189 3 года назад
I agree, it creates tension, but it should also incorporate some free roaming sections. It has so much stuff that go unnoticed due to constant time constraint.

The predominant reason I finally caved in and bought a 360 was to play Halo 3. However, I was fully aware of Dead Rising and knew I had to own it. At a time where I was given Dead Rising, Army of 2, Kane & Lynch, & GTA IV (I bought Halo 3), I COULD NOT stop playing Dead Rising. Add to that I was playing on a tube tv and not HD, I couldn't read the recipes and was just messing around. A few months in, I finally bought an HD TV and it was as if a whole new world opened up as I could now read the recipes. Although it was limited to a mall and areas you'd find in a typical mall (with the exception to the ending I suppose), it still felt more like an open world/do anything game when compared to the likes of GTA IV. Just being able to pick up a bench and toss it at zombies, stuff like that made the possibilities seem endless. An unpopular opinion: despite 2 having coop and crafting weapons mechanic, I still prefer OG as it felt a little more grounded. I can't see myself going to a work bench to attach 2 chainsaws to a boat paddle to make a zombie killing weapon like 2, but I can see myself taking out a few zombies with a chainsaw, baseball bat, etc like in OG.

Great Video! This is a game I been waiting for a Switch port as it would be a shoe in and probably run great since it orginally came out on Xbox 360. Then I think about how devs love to put things on cloud gaming or port things poorly; which makes a steam deck more appealing.

Dead rising was one of the best "broken games" I had played. The AI of the other people in the mall was awful they would run into zombies or just stop, aiming a gun was god awful, the saving was horrendous, and the time system was so odd.

I was so looking forward to Dead Rising and it could of been great. But with that constant calling on the radio really killed the enjoyment. It wasn’t until Dead Rising 4 did i really have fun

The first time I saw Frank was in the Project X Zone game (Nintendo3DS), I still need to play Dead Rising, looks so much fun! But first I need to get a PS3 or Xbox360.

I never liked this game, but now I see it's because I was playing it completely wrong! I had no idea about the mechanic to level up when you die, I always just thought I'd have to start over from Level 1... I guess I need to give this one a shot again. Thanks SLX.

Dang, that sucks. Yeah you get pretty powerful and the game gets easier. Kind of like "well I failed this time but now I know what to do." Plus it's just fun slicing up zombies, especially once you get some weapons from the psychopaths.

i actually enjoyed chop til you drop because it helped me enjoy the game in regards to completing missions as stages. on the original game, the time for missions was way too short no matter what level i was on , it felt unforgiving.

I was really excited for this game and bought it on day one, but could never really get into it. They got so much right, but the terrible escort missions and the time-based structure, both of which effect the ending, made it a nightmare for a perfectionist like me. I mean, you miss one thing or fail a mission because the escorted AI is 'tarded and it's pretty much game over. The graphics were really something for the day, mostly as far as the number of characters on screen at the same time. It was something that could never be done on the previous gen of consoles. Great X360 showcase. Just not my cup of tea.

Loved the concept (and the movies of course) but my OG 360 load times and coming up against a gun toting boss while having no gun and being underpowered totally killed Dead Rising for me. Never went back to it - might just give it another chance in emulation - thanks for the video!

My first 1000/1000 in the X360 Although I must say I HATE the timer. Hard-core fans love it, but I hated to have an open world full of great opportunities to cause mayhem and have that limited because having to always be on a hurry.

I can certainly appreciate the game for what it is, and for what it brought to the gaming world (especially back in 2006) but I just could not enjoy these games because of the time limit stuff and the survivors etc. And with that being said, I still think it was a mistake for them to remove the time limit from Dead Rising 4, not that it would really have made that game much better, but yeah. Dead Rising 3 was kinda the sweet spot for me offering a regular mode with no time limit, but that nightmare mode (I think that's what it was called) that had one for purists and fans of the series. I still wonder if we'll ever get a new DR game now, and whether Frank West will be involved or not. Maybe DR4 took place in an alternative universe or something lol

I bought this game back on my 360 with the original release thinking it would definitely be one of my favorites for years to come. Who doesn’t love zombie games 😝 I did really enjoy everything about it except for the time system. I hated that lol! I just wanted to kill zombies and save people without worrying about the timed story aspect. Needless to say I traded the game in at GameStop or sold it or something I don’t remember. Anyway after watching this review it really makes me want to give it another shot. I now realize that the whole point of the game is to do everything in a timely manner. I didn’t realize back then that you keep all your experience and levels🤪 I was always just so disappointed when I got the game over and did not want to start all over🤬 I just thought I had to be missing something, and now I see what it was haha! May have to try and find it for my PS4 or Xbox series x(xbone version). Anyway I know I’m all over the place with my train of thought and just wanted to say thanks for the review and opening up my eyes to one of the cooler looking zombie games out there 😜👍 I’ll definitely keep my eyes peeled at my local game stores! Nice review!
