So I talk about the infamous tank slapper, and death wobble that a lot of people experience on their motorcycle. I also go over the causes why many of us experience the motorcycle sway back and forth in the rear on our Harley Davidson touring bikes. it is so important to make sure your motorcycle is always in perfect working condition before you go out on rides. I also recommend the importance of a good after market suspension system.

So for the people looking at this video for fixes. Front wheel side to side is usually steering head bearings going bad/being out of adjustment. Yes wheel weight can be a factor but usually a consistent front side to side “slap is steering head bearing. Rear swing arm “dyna wobble” or side to side is a design flaw by Harley rear isolators mounting a fork “swingarm” to the bike. The fox is simple. Solid rear bushings or stabilizer “alloy art, tru track” while yes suspension helps with this by aligning the fork/adding spherical bearings. The biggest thing is flex between frame, and fork. Cheapest and best in my opinion is alloy art stabilizer. Also can be caused by a cupped tire caused by tire pressure/cheap tires. So it’s not always a single thing causing the issue but it could be a couple different things that cause it.

Say your traveling at the speed limit is it likely or just at higher speeds?
@merlinphumc69
@merlinphumc69 2 месяца назад
@@mnstrmike4853 including everything listed above also consider the following. straight line would usually be associated to imbalance wheels, bearings “steering or wheel” going bad, or improper install of wheels. In a turn is usually associated to rubber mounts/isolators, or suspension geometry. To get it dialed in really depends on the the setup.

@merlinphumc69 my 05 dyna has never did it but I stay near the speed limit. That's why I was asking if it does the wobble because of speeding?

Hi John I have a 2018 streetglide I bought new I’ve had this wobble in my bike from new The first time it happened to me we were on strait road , road was in good condition, I brought to my dealer and they checked it out and said it was the fall away so they tightened the steerinbearing to reduce the fall away . That really didn’t change anything. Over the years I’ve added progressive shocks in front and back but I still have it . I have recently added Olin’s in the back. I still have the wobble The wobble now seems to be mostly at about 130 kms on a right hand curve, I’m always ready for it so I’m prepared for it. What I do now is slow down and lean forward on the motorcycle and this keeps it under control The motorcycle never been in an accident, it doesn’t seem to matter if I have new tires or not , I have 60000 kms on it now and it still has the wobble same as when it was new Looking forward to your reply Thanks John

Whenever I buy a brand new Harley Bagger: before taking delivery, 3 things I have the Service Dept. do are... 1. Replace the rear shocks with upgraded, adjustable performance shocks (I prefer RWD, Legends). 2. Install a Fan to the oil cooler and flash the ECM. 3. Install a Trask M8 Checkvent (to ventilate the crankcase). I typically wait until the 1k service before doing a Stage-1 upgrade (and 3k miles before doing a Stage-2 upgrade) Bars and Seat upgrades I also do, along with the front suspension; as time & finances allow. Great video. I own a 2007 Street Glide I bought it new in 07. I’ve felt it wobble a little through the years. I replaced the front suspension with the Progressive years ago. Last year I replaced the factory Harley rear shocks with Ohlins I haven’t felt it wobble anymore. The single best up grade anyone can do to a Harley. Getting rid of the stock suspension. Be safe brother man.

I’m glad you mentioned that, I was curious if there was something else in the front end to inspect. From having a issue with my bike feeling wobbly, I installed a great tire, I replaced the rear shocks and front springs on my Road Glide. Harley springs are not good compared to these after market parts. I have a better ride and I have more confidence on the highway at high speeds again, but i never looked into the Neck Bearing. Thanks!

This was an excellent topic. I enjoyed reading everybody's comments. I had a 2006 Road Glide. I hit a large bump one day and noted later on that I had rear steer when I changed lanes in the super slab. I stopped in to see my local bike shop owner. He found the front motor mount was damaged. New $20 dollar motor mount, problem solved.

Thanks for the info John. I installed LS front and rear on my 2020 RKS around 2000 miles. Completely different ride from stock. The bike feels lighter in the curves! I’ve been very pleased with the set up and improved handling. Recently, after about 8000 miles I had an issue with my right rear shock leaking at the adjustment knob. Contacted LS and filled out a warranty claim. Within 24 hours I was sent a UPS ground shipping label requesting return for inspection. After a few days, I was contacted my shocks were being repaired and will be shipped out the following day under warranty. Top notch customer service!

I had a case of death wobble on a '70 BSA back in 1971 when I went to pass a car on the interstate at about 75 mph. After checking the usual causes, I found that the frame had broken about two inches above the place where the front of the motor mounted to the down tubes. The bike had not been in a wreck or struck anything with the frame. BSA warranted the frame and replaced it.

Can’t overstate how important it is to check tire pressure. Unfortunately it’s a pain in the ass to attach the air nozzle on most baggers. Newer bikes have air stems bent at a 90 degree angle instead of straight up which makes it significantly easier.

On my fourth Harley and 3rd Road Glide, now Limited. Never had wheel wobble but have noticed and wondered about that feeling I get going around a long curve such as you described. It's not a scary feeling but a little back and forth on the bars while in the turn. You explained it well and now I know. Sort of pisses me off. Riding the top-of-the-line Harley and now I have to think about $1K to $2K for shocks cause of a poor design. May try you balancing liquid too, noticed some vibration around 110. It's a new 2022 RG Limited with only 8K and shouldn't have any. Thanks for explaining this.

I bought a used Harley found in pieces. Someone put it together and I rode it. Death wobble at 70. Passing someone and it started wobbling. Took it to a progressional. Triple tree was not even the correct one. Causing it not to be tight. The bearings were trashed… the tires were never balanced. Rear rim was missing center ring or something and front axle didn’t have a correct shim and spacer. I bought a good used rim.. it cost me 1100$ all together to get right. I can now ride 90 and go into corners with confidence

I agree about tires, but also the loose head steering bearings will cause it. It happened to me on the 2003 Duce. Also had an issue w my old 2007 Street Glide w worn our swing arm bushing and loose head bearings. I had to get head bearings adjusted every 8k miles. Also the bad Allignment will might cause it. The death wobble is not a joke. If you doing 80-90mph it’s very hard to slow down to stop it.

On my '84 FLH that I still own, over 35 yrs ago I was out on route 80 by Lk Hopatcong on my way home and the front end started to wobble. Yea, I was jammin'!! I slowed down and realized what was happening. I bought it back up to just have a minimal wobble and decided not to play anymore. I brought it right to Steele's HD in Bloomfield. We jacked up the front end and the forks had a lot of play. They tightened up the steering neck nut, bent back the big washer to prevent it from loosening up and my problem was solved. I've never had an issue since. Thanks for the info!

you are right about the tire and wheel care, but wobbles can happen with loose or worn neck bearings, and if the bike is loaded improperly, too much weight too far back can cause a wobble and lastly and more often the case on Dyna's the Rubber Mount system if you have a bad mount or mount bushing that can cause wobbles as well

I was lucky enough to recover it and finish the race. I believe I hit a patch on the track but, It was good for 1 hell of an adrenaline pump and never took that line on the track again. I agree with your suspension theory! I was on a dialed in superbike with after market suspension and very sticky slicks so sometimes its those pesky gremlims

It happened tome on a 2019 road glide going to Daytona and it was the swing-arm bushing so I changed them to performance shocks, front and back. You have great information for everyone that loves to ride as we do. Follow friends his channel is great for all from beginner to advanced. Love your set up by the way .. Mad Max is the set up..

Death Wobble or tank slap on a Harley touring bike is frequently caused by under torqued neck bearings. Under torqued neck bearings and bad or improperly inflated tires.

Hello John, I've been following you on Instagram and watching your videos for about a year now. I thought for sure I had subscribed to your channel since you met a former co-worker Robert Simmons. Thanks for clearing up some reasons for the tank slap condition. I still have my stock suspension on my 2018 Ultra Limited, what kind of suspension do you have on your rear suspension on your bike? Hector

I can confirm your statments concerning Ride On TPS. I dont ride without it. Also found that its absolutely imperative to keep proper tire pressures. Awesome segment. See you in Daytona..

I've only ever experienced death wobble on a '47 Willys CJ 2A. My '19 RG will sway at 80+ on long sweepers. Can't wait to upgrade those rear pos shocks. Thanks for the video.

Great content, nothing is perfect but with maintenance and regular checks you can prevent a lot and lower the chances

It’s so important to take care of our tires. Always check the PSI and condition of the both tires always.
