While standing on a scaffold at a height of 10ft or higher, OSHA has several requirements to reduce the risk of workers falling down and prevent accidents that could easily end in death. This demonstration can help as a reminder for you and your employees to act proactive and stay safe at all times.

i currently work for a company that supposedly has a policy of no tie offs when building a scaffold. i was up on the top decks from frame one up to the tenth one - 60' in the air. talk about a death waiting to happen. especially when leaning over the edge guiding the rope wheel with scaffold pieces then pulling them up. i can't believe i risked my life for them. its union, too.
@welcometoorefuge
@welcometoorefuge 9 лет назад
Scaffold has to be tied to building every 20 feet and staggered on each level. 10 frames up and NO ties...? Where in the hell is the safety inspector.? Any union job I've ever been on has had a safety dude AND a safety meeting on the job every morning. Are you putting gravity pins through all the frames ?
@Ihatecabinetmoths
@Ihatecabinetmoths 9 лет назад
Monte Walsh the scaffold does get tied off to the building every 20', and yes there is a safety director. However I don't understand how its okay to not have a harness on is what i was trying to say. Since there usually is no tie off point for myself, i go without one cuz im not allowed to tie to the scaffold that i am erecting.
@feo13rob
@feo13rob 9 лет назад
Its okay to have a NO TIE OFF policy but you must still have a FALL PROTECTION PLAN. Are you guys using safety nets? If no plan is in place then said company is in violation. You can report all violations to OSHA (anonymously) & you cant be fired. Know your rights!! Your actions can possibly save someone's life.

***** good luck with that idea. as soon as work slows down your gone. i have a feeling the actual truth is not being told tbh. what company is going to have a policy like that without any protection. i would just show up with a harness and lanyard in the morning. i think thats a better idea.
@welcometoorefuge
@welcometoorefuge 9 лет назад
stoovidular Us scaffold guys are constantly moving too much to wear a harness, and I think we are the only ones that aren't REQUIRED to wear one. You plug on a frame, apply the bracing, plank it and then you move down to the next bay. If the scaffold falls, you DON'T want to be tied to it...you ride it down. Anything other than a collapse, a fall from scaffold is 99% preventable because you forgot where you were. Never get comfortable up there and THINK about every step you take. Leave your phone in your truck. I've been doing this for over 30 years and I've only been hurt once...and it was on the ground when my boss bet me 100 bucks I couldn't carry 10 plank. I did and then I slipped in the mud with 10 plank on my back

32 foot ladder with standoffs. My rappelling belt with a Petzl Shunt tied off to the ladder. Then when I get up there I can lean right back without even using my hands. I don't even mess around on high ladders without being tied in.

Indeed, employers are required to provide a safe workplace and also to require the use of proper safety equipment. It's also the workers responsibility to follow the safety rules and to use the safety equipment as provided.

I have apartment houses and sometimes requires stuff at heights. I have a handyman roofer and he takes risks like crazy - climbed in top of a metal roof 40+ feet up to inspect the chimney. It has probably a 6-8:12 pitch. HE PINCHED THE SEAMS TO CLIMB UP. Even if I could work at talk heights no problem I wouldn't take risks like that. Scary enough on the pump jacks at 30 feet for me.

People are saying "less government" but it wasn't the boss who fell off the ladder. It was a worker who did with what he had, to do his job. Had the boss provided the proper equipment, I'm sure he would have used it. Safety has to be enforced, otherwise the safe workers lose their bids to the reckless.
@SpencerKelly93

and without OSHA the companies who risk their employees will go out of business because 1.) Their employees will leave -or- 2.) An employee gets hurt and the company is sued into oblivion. OSHA doesn't do anything except micro-manage and cause problems. They hunt small companies like wild game and TRY to fine you for things. If they actually wanted to help, they would inspect a jobsite, write out a list of items that need to be corrected and instruct those workers as to why that is and then give a period of...say a week to correct it. If he comes back and it isn't fixed, then it's a fine. They way they operate now, they role up to a jobsite, take a bunch of pictures before you know they're their and THEN pull up and tell you all the things your being fined for. Bullshit. Workplace injuries and deaths were already in steep decline when OSHA came around and then they/the government takes credit for the continued decline. Your tax dollars at work...
@1971SuperLead
@1971SuperLead 8 лет назад
Spencer Kelly Utter nonsense. I worked for an aerospace company for over 20 years. OSHA did a lot to make our workplace much safer. Without OSHA I would be dead right now. And your belief that employees quit their jobs when they are dangerous is ridiculous. History shows us all kinds of people who worked dangerous jobs, simply because we live in a world where jobs are hard to get. History shows us that the rich will exploit the poor any way they can. Hell they used to send young boys into coal mines without respirators.. Need I say more?
@SpencerKelly93
@SpencerKelly93 8 лет назад
K. If you want to believe that, go ahead. I'm fairly certain that your employer implemented or would have implemented similar or adequate safety provisions. It's in their best interest. Also, love how you threw rich vs. poor into the argument with the beautiful assumption that all business owners are rich fat cats sending their employees to the slaughter as cannon fodder. I know where you stand with that statement and I know not to waste anymore time. Let's agree to disagree. Have a good one.
@1971SuperLead
@1971SuperLead 8 лет назад
Spencer Kelly You imagine that companies are eager to spend money on safety. But that's not reality. Reality is that companies want to stay in business, and they do that by offering the best goods at the lowest prices. Offering the best goods at the lowest prices means not spending money on safety. You have to use a little common sense here. The sweatshops will always win if there are no regulations. It's why we have regulations to begin with..Because in the the past, companies could not afford to be safety minded. Safety was a luxury. So kids went into coal mines and construction workers fell off buildings. There was no budget for safety. Today, there is a budget, because all the companies that compete have to provide for the same safety standards. This makes the playing field level for companies to bid on. And your belief that companies provide safety because they don't want to be sued, is purely false. A dead employee can't sue. And the family who just lost their wage earner can't afford the lawyers to sue a corporate giant. The truth is that even today, many workers are injured due to a lack of safety and are screwed. I am one of them. Due to cheap office furniture I am suffering from a repetitive movement injury that causes me to be disabled. And I can't even get disability, because I can't afford the lawyers I need so I can collect disability. Your belief that companies shouldn't have to follow laws is simply ridiculous. They are powerful entities that would quickly throw children back into the coal mines if there were no regulations. They would have to, to be able to stay in business.
@StormGod29
@StormGod29 5 лет назад
Your assumption that workers will use provided PPE is deeply flawed in my personal experience. I constantly have to remind workers to use provided partial face respirators and hearing protection as well as not smoke around open solvent containers. I have no doubt that many deaths each year occur because workers fail to use provided safety measures. Just as I have no doubt that many deaths occur because companies do not provide adequate PPE and safety measures. You can't place all the blame on companies.

@hectorcarranza6366
@hectorcarranza6366 6 лет назад
If your question is : if you need to use a retractable l with 2 hooks ! The short answer is yes: 2 hooks because as you are coming up on the scaffold you always want to be hooked So you tie as you climb ; A double retractable is better than the typical 6' lanyard because if you are using a lanyard you need to be more than 12' because if you are 6' and the lanyard is 6' = to 12' . You should buy yourself a double retractable life line that way if you slip while you are coming up you will be protected. it just happened to one of my brothers ; he was able to tell me the story of how it happend. Double yoyos are the way to go; Best of all if you work for a company _ they should provide one for you to use . Osha clearly states that ppe / personal protective equipment should be provided by the employer

If your going to do somthing dumb like this, at least put on a safety harness attached to somthing, and have the other guy do the same thing. your fall could knock his ass off the scaffold too and kill both of you. That was a stupid example. Yeah great its safe now, but you tell me how many places will hire and install a fukn mast climber to paint a house. As much as people don't want workers to get hurt, they also don't want to have to pay a shitload to get their house painted and some simply cant afford it. Building houses will always be risky.
@rob77g60
@rob77g60 10 лет назад
If you love painting houses so much that you're prepared to risk your life doing it just to save a few bucks, then I wish you the best of luck Jon. Alternatively you could do what my boss did and invest in the right tools and equipment for the job in the first place. Mast climbers and pump jacks are affordable, practical, easy to use, fast to set up, make working at heights far easier, can be claimed on taxes, become a value added company asset, will lower your insurance premiums and all but eliminate the chance of fines or being shut down. Oh yeah, and they might just mean the difference between going home in your truck or in a hearse. Building houses is only risky for those to stupid to see the risks.

The same sort of jackleg that doesn't have safety equipment is the same sort that doesn't have workers' comp insurance so that when one of his workers is injured, the worker has to sue the homeowner for his medical bills. Well there goes the cheap price out the window.
@jrregan
@jrregan 6 лет назад
Doubt it. It's not the home owners responsibility to ensure a contractor follows the law. That's their job, the reason they are in the business, to manage between the home owner and the actual worker. Very few suits happen directly against the home owner, and when they do, home owners insurance takes the lead. The likely hood that the insurance company will lose is rare. Especially when it can be show to be such an obvious careless and flagrant violation of safety practices.
@HYUKLDER1
@HYUKLDER1 6 лет назад
In UK homeowners have a duty of care. It is the responsibility of professionals working on people's property to work out how to do it. If however a homeowner or occupier becomes involved in any way about the method employed to carry out work on their property then they themselves become liable! So agreeing to someone lifting very heavy paving slabs without proper equipment or a painter to work in a way that is obviously unsafe such as off a high unsecured ladder, would mean the homeowner can be sued for resultant injury. Properly insured UK homeowners usually have liability insurance to cover such an event.

If the house owner provides equipment, safety or tools etc and the workman falls off a ladder or some other injury regardless and goes to court, the court will order the homeowner to provide compensation if insurance etc fails. The property owner is the compensator of last resort. The court will do everything it can to make the homeowner responsible. Lesson: do not provide anything to the workman, even a bar of chocolate.
