In January 1944 the United States Army Air Force introduced the North American
P-51D Mustang as a long range escort fighter; designed to be able to escort heavy bombers into every corner of Europe. In July 1944 Germany introduced the first operational jet fighter-bomber in history, the Messerschmitt Me-262. At over 100 mph faster than the Mustang’s 440 mph
and its four 30 mm cannon, it was a devastating weapon against American bombers.
In one of these engagements a young American fighter pilot and a young German ace came together in an event that would start a long road ending in a great friendship. Hosted by Colin Heaton. Forgotten History is a 10th Legion Pictures Production.

In my travels I have learned one thing- majority of human beings genuinely get along very very well, and you can make friends basically anywhere. Crap governments and corruption of propaganda is what turns us on one another. It's almost like we are intentionally kept at one anothers throat. Just my thoughts. Why shouldn't we all be friends?

The Allies quickly discovered and exploited one of the biggest weaknesses of the ME262, its very slow landing approach speed and the fact that the Juno jet engines did not spool up instantly if required. 262's were successfully engaged on their finals into land. This tactic was so successful that the Luftwaffe had to deploy Me109's to patrol the sky's around the 262's bases to deter attacks by allied fighters.

No better than any other fighter given its speed limitations, unless it bounced the jet from high altitude. The only advantage would have been in a turning fight, and no 262 pilot would be that foolish. See full video ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-fqYaJXUG7H4.html

Even with the 262 being relatively new, the German pilots that flew it, knew its limitations and advantages the jet had going against a U.S. fighter. Ive seen in a few documentaries one of the best ways U.S. pilots ( flying the Mustang mainly by this point in Europe) could down a 262 was to attack it while it was landing. Im sure that there were other tactics as well.

The p51 mustang was powered by the British rolls Royce merlin PISTON engine. The German me262 was powered by TURBINES. It was a formidable plane which was never shot down. Only time they were grounded was when germany lost its oil fields, as these planes drink a lot of fuel. The p51 was out classed and out gunned by the hugest technological leap known at the time. Where the me262 had a top speed of 550mph and a cruising speed 125 mph FASTER than the p51

I would like to think I would have been one of those pilots. But, if I am being honest... I like big slow monsters. I love big machinery. From what I drive now, to what I served on... The Mustangs only had to keep away from whe Me 262 til their fuel ran out and they came in to land. The 262's engines could not be accelerated quickly, the compressors would stall. So they were dead ducks. The Me 262 needed themselves escort by Fw 190s for this landing (at that low height the 190 was just as suited as a Me 109). And the primary role of the Mustangs was NOT to fend off fighters from the bombers, the task was to destroy the Luftwaffe. The bombers were the bait to get the fighters in the sky and hunt them down. The goal was to have total air superiority for D-Day.

My dad saw P51's and ME262's mixing it up from the rear turret of his 61 Squadron Lancaster. Polish Mustangs shot down 4 ME262's for the loss of 2 Lancs. Allied fighters outnumbered the jets 220ish to 25 though, Spits as well as Mustangs

Faster was not necessarily better! The Me262 was faster but no where near as controllable and was not built as well as the P51! The P51 with the Merlin engibe was and is still the best puston engine ever!!!!

Indeed. The Mustang was a sleek weapon of war at the pinnacle of it's design lineage, the 262 was a unfinished prototype that killed more of it's own pilots than the enemy.

@FORGOTTENHISTORYCHANNEL
@FORGOTTENHISTORYCHANNEL Год назад
You are incorrect. the Me-262 was the first operation jet fighter starting missions in June 1944 with KG-54 and KG-51. Need to read Colin's book, The "Me-262b Stormbird" which is full of documentation and interviews with over 20 me-262n pilots. Enjoy and educate yourself.
