His choice to slide lower makes so much sense with this song, it makes it feel that much more mournful
@johndeeregreen4592
@johndeeregreen4592 Год назад
It definitely changed how I view and will be singing the song from now on. I covered this song as a guitarist and singer in several bands over the past 30 years, and even as a bass, I would go up like everyone else does when singing it. His choice to go down when hitting the chord root notes gave it a feeling of a lot more tension and definitely fits the song. He did shift the key up one half-step (from A#m to Bm), which does help. With Geoff's lowest chest note being an F#1 and also using that note as a subharmonic a lot, moving the key to Bm was a perfect choice.... F#1 is the inverted 5th of the Bm chord. He knew what he was doing here and did it perfectly.

I am a dyed in the wool metalhead. I'm also a trained baritone although my training is decades in the past. I never really enjoyed country/western music but this song had an edge to it that came pretty close to metal. 40 years of smoking and 25 years of hard drinking took a toll on my voice. I stopped smoking a few months ago and my drinking days ended in 2006 (knock on wood that they don't make a comeback because I still want a shot and a drag, just not today). Geoff's voice is otherworldly. On my best day, back in the day, I could almost make it down as low as Geoff but my sustain wasn't there. His vibrato is subtle but pronounced. This man has a set of pipes like nobody's business. Sustain like a pipe organ. Range from second-tenor to basso-profundo, pretty much where my vocal range was. He's a real talent to be sure. It was fun watching you listen to what he had to offer. ✌️🖖

I did notice that. I am glad he was so inclusive, that's really cool of him! I am naturally Right-handed. Mom is absolutely hopelessly Right-handed and I saw the aftermath and how she struggled at two different times in her life when she broke her elbow once and then her wrist, both times on her good arm. She really felt useless while she healed up because she has always been weak as a kitten and twice as clumsy with her Left hand and arm. I did not want to be like that. I made a concerted effort throughout a lot of my childhood to use my Left hand for many things. Eating, drinking, opening doors, especially the more simple stuff, I can do Lefty. I can shoot pool Lefty (I am really no good at pool either way so that hardly matters), I can shoot basketball Lefty and fire a paintball gun with reasonable accuracy with the Left hand. I just happen to be Left-Eye-Dominant, which I think has also really helped me in some ways, even if it makes me weird.

This is one of my very favorite spooky Country songs, and I recall as a young lad listening to the Marty Robbins' cover on the radio, and getting creeped out at the unique take on Hell presented in the lyrics. The imagery is so vivid: Devil cattle stampeding across a sky that just stretches on forever; burning brands and sparks flying from their hooves, all the while being chased by those men who are damned for their deeds (or misdeeds) in life. Consistent in tempo pitch and volume. Also Geoffs favorite note the A1 (in my opinion) is 55Hz and he regularly hits G1's at 52Hz and lower. Those notes are not visible on your spectrogram. I think you need to play around with the settings to make everything visible to al least 40 or 30Hz.

Being a life long baritone I can feel for all of us who notice that all the heroes in songs are the tenors. The bad guys mostly low voices. So nice to see other wise. Love all of his videos uses as much wonderful video shots as he does vocals.

This song was penned in 1948 by a man named Stan Jones. He wrote it after listening to an elderly Native American in Arizona relate a story about how ones' spirit enters the sky after death. I suppose it eventually applied to cowboys too? Thank you for a beautiful reaction. You are awesome.

As a baritone singer myself, it's always a rare treat when lower singing is appreciated. I feel like there's been too much push for bright and high vocals, and deeper tones get regulated to the background or as accents. So when I hear a singer performing in a low or middling range, it always catches my attention.

Ok first time hearing this song and this version is just awesome. On a side note, this song is actually based on a true story that happened about half an hour from where I grew up in Crosby, Texas around 1890. It was an actual Stampede and cattle were driven off a cliff, and it's said that the ghost herd can still be seen& heard

Loved your review of one of my favorite songs! I was 4 years old when my oldest got married and when he moved out of my parents house, he gave me a radio (the old arch style tube radio). One of the first songs I heard on that radio was the version by Vaughan Monroe (Stan Jones wrote the song in 1948 and Vaughan Monroe recorded it in 1949). Many others have recorded it since then, but the version by Vaughan Monroe has always been my favorite until Geoff's version! Thanks again.

His speed is what astounds me. As a bass singer it takes more air in the lower registers to keep the note and the tone and moving quickly between notes gets more difficult the lower you go. He makes it sound so effortless to do big jumps and then quick moves at the lower part of his register.
@johndeeregreen4592

I never really thought about it much with his sound placement and consistency.... now I will be always thinking about it! And now I hear it's always consistent, regardless of technique used. Even when he uses glottal compression on some of his lower bass notes, I can now hear he phonates consonants and vowels the same... that's crazy!
