Scrolling thru your otter library getting educated on sets. Haven’t targeted them before, but feeling better about my chances with every video! As always appreciate all your posts. Stay safe out there.
20 years ago I sold all my traps. Use to be a Victor fan. Just bought a bunch of traps for a lot more than I sold mine for. Everyone said I made a mistake buying Duke 330's. Only been a couple weeks, but those things are no joke. Use to be a Victor #4 double long sping fan, but they seem to be a thing of the past. Love your videos, from an out of practice trapper.
You nailed it about they are creatures of habit like the mink. Many years ago it was explained to me to think of the otter as a over size mink. Also you got it for the time they go by . Not many wants to understand that . I was taught to trap them in blind sets . Have caught some in beaver and coon sets . Good points you made also otter is a land animal like you stated. Thanks
I think 25 is kind of the rule Spencer. 100 miles is the exception. It just shows that it is possible for them to travel that far. Thank you for watching
I grew up in the wilderness and took natural resources classes at the local college. I have spent my whole life hunting fishing, trapping camping, etc... and I haven't found anything you said arguable.
Another awesome video Dale, that's some very good advise you have given us. We're getting to have quite a few otters in my area in Pa., but we can't trap them in my WMU. I caught a huge male this spring in a conibear set for beaver and I had to turn it in to the Game Commission.
Great video once again. In a video could you talk about badgers and the mother kit relationship. Like when they are kicked out of the den, the breeding season, and productive sets?
Chris Frizzell Laclede MO I love watching your videos. I have 2000 acres around Brookfield MO and love to trap. I'm getting ready to retire and would really like some help on cats, beaver, otter.
I appreciate you watching Chris. Thank you. I trapped in your country in 03. I've got several videos up on beaver, cats, and otter. I also offer personal instructions as well. If you'd like more information on that you can call me at 319-217-0655.
Amazing info Dale, I had no idea how much they traveled, it's crazy, makes sense now why I haven't caught one yet,I've got otter sign at 2 places I beaver trap but working full-time and just being a weekend trapper and just can't run traps for weeks at a time but know eventually I should grab one,if I catch 20 beaver in a season is a good year for me
Yea William that makes it tough. If you can get lucky and get in front of one you're bound to get him..I wish you the best of luck. Thank you for watching
@@billingsleybrandtrappinglu1531 thanks Dale, I met one of your buddies at the beaver drawing, I live in ohio, summit County, his first name is Mark and him and I hit it off,he lives in Brimfield, Portage County, he's a damn fine young man and a trapping fool, you guys are my kind of people
Man Dale that was a great video , we have a few in this country , but never caught one. So glad that you got rain , hope more to come your way. In the Otter study we they just releasing them close to where you caught them , and then tracking the movements ? Thanks buddy
Thanks Mike. We observed them through the night then released them where we caught them the next day. They were doing telemetry studies of their movements
Dale how do you anchor your #11 in the soft mud that is common in Iowa dreams/rivers? Also if money wasn’t an object would you select the belisle over the duke 330? Is the magnum duke better for otter over the standard? Thx
Brad I run mostly fish stakes in the water. That's a 36 in rebar stake. Other than that I use Pogo's. Absolutely id run nothing but belisle if I could afford to. I see no real advantage of the magnum over the standard 330.
Ive been looking at adding some 11s but i was looking at baseplating off the bat. Ive had enough trainwrecks with otter and unmodified traps that i traps get beefed up for they go out. That was my next question was dry land otter sets. I have a feeling we're in for a wet winter and i may have to take otter on dry land. I was thinking like a 3 hole flat set at toilets, dry setting the cross overs if need be
Yes Ontarget any mods you can do to a trap are way better than straight factory. We'll jump into some dry otter set stuff in tomorrow video. Thank you for watching
Great Video Dale. I got several areas to Connect with an Otter theirs a small pond/marsh that flows right by the Shell Rock River that pond can’t be more than 50yards away from the main river. I have several #2 Blake and Lamb Double Longsprings and #3 Victor Double Longsprings center swiveled both of those Double Longsprings I welded a baseplate to beef things up. Is a #3 Victor Double Longspring too much for an Otter? Looking forward to seeing you in Osage!!
They definitely travel together. I have made multiple catches many times when they come through. Twice i have caught 2 otter in one 330 coniber at the same time.
I've never done that with otter yet Marty. I did with coon 1 time. 1 was silver tipped the other a cinnamon. That was cool! Thank you for watching this video. I really appreciate you
They have a better base than the Dukes. The springs are close to equal. The jaws of the Bridger are heavier in my opinion. But you can't buy them in a double jaw like the Dukes Travis
@travismcquady6564 they're not expensive really. You can pick them up new for $100 a dozen. We lucked out last summer and bought 20 dozen Brand new in the box from a dealer for $36 a dozen. You don't find those deals every day
There's no difference Steve. It's just easier to set them that way out in front of you like I did. If you're setting them across your knees then you can push both springs at once.
Thanks for the info, I’ve not had good luck targeting otter but I would sometimes like to keep them out of my beaver sets. Another great informative video.
Hey mr Billingsley, i made a set with a 330 on an otter toilet. There is fresh otter scat and fresh tracks on the toilet. But my trap is gone. Any idea what happened? I have searched for my trap but cant find it
It's hard to say? It pays to stake all traps or tie em off to something. You may can take a rod and reel and try to fish it out?? Best of luck finding it
Good video Dale!! There is usually more than 1 otter so would you run a standard length chain or would you run enough chain to where they could get up on bank also? And how many sets would you have at 1 location? I know you would have to clean out some other animals first probably. Thanks for all that you do.
I just run standard chains Chris. So I try to put 4-6 sets per location to take all I can. If you got room and can run 10 sets by all means do it. Thank you for watching Chris
