I feel like to prepare for deadly premonition, you need to watch twin peaks season one and two, dubbed in chinese, translated into vietnamese from chinese and then back into english.
The writing in this game is actually genius, York talking about B movies while driving, him casually bringing up gruesome details about past cases, it's absolutely hilarious
bizarrely, despite this game being bad I found its story very good, if it weren't for the flaws and the silly things I would say that compared to heavy rain it is more interesting and has plot twists a little better worked and less imprevisives.
I think the English translators who were involved just were like "fuck it" and just translated mostly word to word instead of adding any type of imagery which worked AMAZINGLY
The game is obviously heavily inspired by Twin Peaks (which is incredibly popular in Japan), which has a similar awkward and "weird" tone, dialogue-wise. So, I bet the Japanese version is like that too. Maybe even more so.
Well, the notion of "I have become self aware! Now I am cured of all mental ailments!!" is more of a Hollywood thing. If that were true to reality therapy, self help, and medication wouldn't be as big of a business as it is now. Just like physical injuries, mental injuries (such as trauma) don't just immediately disappear once you start healing. It is a gradual process
If there is one thing I have come to realize in dealing with my issues, and talking to friends about theirs, is that no matter how conscious you are of a behavior, positive or negative, it is really difficult to not default to said behavior.
this game freaked me out the first time i played it, because the main character talks to a voice in his head(im assuming the player) named zach, so having a character look directly at the screen and address me by my name was so odd
My theory has always been that York is actually some kind of other being, not just a personality. He protects York by merging with him and he possesses special powers. He actually exists to fight against the red seeds.
If he were to exist to fight against the red seeds and solve the case, Zach would've had to start existing only when and after he had the urge to do so, not before and during, which is what we are introduced in the beginning of the game.
This game unironically changed my life. Picked it up on impulse while at GameStop getting my 3rd red-ringed 360 replaced. (It was a wild time) My wife and I settled in to play, and found ourselves completely sucked in. Passed the game around to our entire friend group, and even dressed as York/Zach that Halloween. (She was York. We even made sure to have FK in our coffee…great days)
I love the "Great Fantastic Amazing" everytime you land a headshot because at first it just seems dumb. Like he's complimenting himself. Then it after the game you realize he's complimenting Zack who's self esteem is horrendously low. York is just being an amazing corporeal brother the entire game.
This is the first I'm hearing about Swery and Suda working on a game together. Now they just gotta get Yoko Taro Involved and we'll have a game so incompressible it'll be studied for generations
They could spend the next two decades making a dozen critically-acclaimed games, before anyone figures out that each and every story and design choice was actually randomly generated by picking words out of a hat.
You know, I'd love to watch this as a movie or short TV series, or a remastered game of this, faithful to all the weirdness and strange music choices. The characters are what made this game, surprisingly, and the twists are quite great too! And all the foreshadowing is obvious to eagle-eyed players!
@@amoraobscura as someone who LOVES twin peaks, I would not mind at all to have another series about a detective going to a quirky town, it can be it's on niche
Me too! And yeah, i watched Twin Peaks but this would be so good! I had a blast watching this video and I didn't know about that game at all! Also Twin Peaks is good but the second half of the second season is a tiny bit... Lacking....
Twin Peaks. My friend played Deadly Premonition, he had never even heard of twin peaks until I showed him some clips. I've been showing him the series and in his words, it is *literally* "Deadly Premonition the series" You can *not* overstate how many references to Twin Peaks in this game LOL it's amazing, as a twin peaks fan I love it
As bizarre as it is, the art direction is actually really pretty and cohesive. As you mentioned, an attention to detail definitely exists within this game. Also unexpectedly accurate dissociative disorder rep for the time?
It certainly seems like a lot of work was put into the story and the characters but the problem was that they were limited by the tech at the time. The story is so all over the place but it has some genuine greatness in its potential
A fine recap! For anyone who hasn't played the game, there is a wealth of entirely optional side content to flesh out the quirky inhabitants of Greenvale. The barbell and rain flower quest for George is but one example - In fact, it's entirely missable, meaning you can miss out on the fast travel mechanic for your entire playthrough if you don't find George pumping iron before solving Thomas's squirrel key quest! You can find bones around town for Willie that have a spooky implication for Bryan the grave digger. You can hunt for car parts hidden in the junkyard to have the General rebuild York's original car, and then race it in time trial courses. Also make use of an underutilized peeping mechanic to catch Thomas dancing in his dress, alone in his apartment, well ahead of the reveal.
So many and they definitely add to the experience, a big part of DP's charm is the quirky characters. A few more to list is the cooking quests with emily, the delivery man Q sideline, even the darts game at the bar to get more inventory slots. Some side quests reward you with useful items such as the legendary guitar which is a melee weapon that never breaks (Melee is the easiest way to deal with enemies, one smack kill) or the infinite ammo submachinegun. I have to play this game over again on the Director's cut, I only ever completed the 360 version and I hear the Director's cut has a lot more lore as well as some improvements.
@@stephens3909 I played the 360 version first and I liked it so much, I got the Director's Cut on PS3, day 1. It's... slightly better looking? It does have extra cutscenes at the beginning and end that raise some questions. I haven't finished DP2, so I don't know if they even affect that game's lore. I completed that version 100% and it's still my only platinum trophy to date.
It’s criminal that I never played this gem, what an absolute absurd monstrosity. Ugly, yet beautiful. Thank you for making this analysis, top tier work as always!
deadly premonition, if you're open to it, can be a damn fine game in terms of narrative and characters. York is certainly one of the msot interesting videogames characters I've seen.
This game is utter genius. Camp at its best! The low-tech engine actually serves it well. Brilliant and vastly better than most of the stuff made last gen and this gen IMHO.
My only hesitation going into this video is the knowledge that my half-memory of some of the game's themes and moments all twisted together is possibly the most "Deadly Premonition" way of remembering Deadly Premonition. I'm frankly afraid to get a more clear understanding of this video game version of being at a Denny's at 3:47AM on a chilly Tuesday morning.
1:22:30 I almost suffocated on a chip I swallowed from laughter. What a brilliant idea. Also thanks to you exposing this gem to me, I might give sequel a chance. That ''child abuse'' burn was top peak dialogue.
If you play this game, try playing on holidays on 5-6 hour intervals, use a guide for the side missions and immerse yourself. It'll transport you to a different dimension for sure. It may be a buggy mess, but it is one of the most unique pieces of media ever created for sure
Sadly even though story is good actual gameplay was much much much worse than the first game. It was really boring to play unlike the first game. If they had removed all the filler in between it would be an actual good game
Funny enough this game actually brought my friend and I closer together and is probably the reason we started podcasting together. In the early days of our friendship I would go visit him and we would play through this together. At first we did it for a laugh since it was often sited as a terrible game but then we got so invested in the story that we would play it for hours on end. The gameplay is terrible and the animation is janky but it's precisely the reason we loved it. If my coffee could talk it would say amazing video as always!
@@armytrainer No need for permission to share an anecdote, which happened to be both relevant to the video and quite cool. Who asked you to contribute nothing but snarky putdowns?
@adam burke and what value did him leaving some bs story about a shit podcast leave? None! Welcome too the Internet where nothing anyone says has value moron
What I love about this game, is it's not "bad" in the sense that it was poorly made, or incompetently made, or rushed through development, or due to budget restraints, or due to technological restraints. This game is "bad" because it is EXACTLY what the creator wanted it to be, which makes it bad in such a grandiose way. I actually really like when games like this have people act in a non-contemporary way, since to me it makes perfect sense that people would act different in a world that's different from real life. Like DIE MONSTER from Symphony Of The Night: I totally took it at face value because that could just be how people in that place and time talk.
"I love how York can't wait to tell people he's a special agent, even after they've already said they know who he is." If I were an FBI special agent in my presumably late 20's, I'd be flashing my badge at everyone too. XD _flashes badge_ Sir this is a Wendy's.
I have to say, starting this channel off from news and then deciding to go to underrated games was the best thing you could've ever done, I have watched every game you've shown. Ill continue to watch and support you through 2023, Keep the wonderful content coming!
With these weirder games, I have so much respect for how seriously the voice actors still take it. Their commitment to the bit really improves immersion.
A masterpiece of a game this is. This is in my top 5 games of all time. The expansive side content, the stock sound effects, the entire Red Seed case. I technically own 4 different versions of this experience. PS3, PC, Switch and the board game that was officially made. Can't wait for your breakdown of A Blessing in Disguise
I'm glad I stumbled on this channel this year. Your videos have a good balance of information, humour and a personal touch that makes it easy to know you are genuinely interested in your subject matter. I was actually getting into a funk of only watching stuff I was subscribed to, but enjoying your postal video has made me give others a chance to.
Besides not acknowledging that many of the technical issues in this video are a result of the Director's Cut port (which can be avoided by playing the game on Xbox One digitally through backwards compatibility) it was a very fun video.
I actually really like the idea of Harry being a focal point (even though you find out at the end). I can see why he’s have trauma after knowing what happened to the town and, upon learning he was having a son- ran away from the responsibility. Only to learn what happened to said son and feel extremely guilty. One of the games themes is trauma and how people deal/dealt with it. And unfortunately his came with a price. I just wish there were more hints of his connection with Gorge. Like a secret collectible or something. But this game is already so jam packed I understand why it was overlooked.
This was a masterpiece of a video essay. I can't believe that I'm so invested in this genre but have never heard of this game before. It's clear that you've done your research and spent a fair amount of time playing the game and that's what made this video so interesting and easy to follow, despite the plot line of the game being all over the place. Keep up the awesome work and I'd love to see a video on the sequel!
I am terrible at video games so I typically watch my friends play them. I watched a friend play through this years ago and it was amazing. I'd love a video of the sequel, especially from you!
The Machinima "Two Best Friends Play" video of Deadly Premonition was my introduction to this game and it legit changed my life. I was a sheltered middle school child who had zero knowledge about video games or Twin Peaks, and now I'm a huge fan of both! It warms my heart that people are still discovering and loving this gem!
If you think about it, the Phantom Pain didn't just copy the "smoke to pass time" mechanic, but rather the a key premise of both stories: an overt fourth-wall break revealing YOU, the player, to be an integral character in the game. So (spoilers for Phantom Pain ahead) by the end of MGSV, it's revealed that Venom Snake is literally just us, the player, faking the life of a legend so hard that we actually become canonically lionized as Big Boss, allowing the actual Big Boss to return to the shadows until the time was right. Meanwhile, York treats us, the player, as Zach throughout the DP, only to reveal that Zach (us) was the real Francis Morgan all along, and that York was the imaginary friend who carried us through our lives until the time came for us to step out of the shadows. IT'S ALL CONNECTED, MAN!
It seems like Deadly Premonition has those kind of flaws that actually become endearing in face of all the love that's been poured on it. Those stock sound effects and silly lines of dialogue kinda complement the game when you can clearly see the devs had a lot of detail put on it, like the foreshadowing about the last boss and Georgie. It's like that funny uncle that always gives you the best gifts on christmas, but uses an ugly fanny pack unironically.
I know the game was low budget not that well made in areas but I just cannot help but love it! The characters, the villains, the lore, the soundtrack gets it right for me. There is a level of campy that adds to the enjoyment. I remember buying this purely on a whim when I saw it in the store years ago, once I got used to the controls I genuinely enjoyed the game.
we need more shit games like this not made for the money but out of passion and love not changing the design 50 times to meet peoples demands but staying true to the original idea
Deadly Premonition is one of THE best games of all time. I don't care what anyone says. I've played it multiple times, 100% completion. Years later I showed it/played it with my boyfriend we quote the cutscene where York is talking with Polly and the music too fucking loud to hear anything anyone is saying. Speaking of the music, I love it! It gets stuck in my head constantly the happy-go-lucky whistling song (Life is beautiful) is constantly stuck in my head as well as The Woods and The Goddess (The main them but with the singing) fucking love it, it gives me a nostalgic feeling for some reason but also creeps me out probably because I played this game as a teenager I'm 27 now so hearing this song now I love it. God, there's song many songs to talk about The Red Tree song back then and even now gives me a flight response, not even a fight or flight response just flight. Hearing it even out of the game creeps me so bad. There's so many great songs in this game. The Underground Theme (The song that has what sounds like a dying dog in it) The very beautiful song Goddess. The other very beautiful song Miss Stiletto Heels, especially the Vinyl version. The cool hip FBI Special Agent song, sounds like something that should have been in The Simpsons Hit and Run and I love it. Honestly one of the best things about this game is the music. - RIP Thomas
@@howardsimcox5596 Well, I've become more obsessed with coffee, and I now frequently point out pointless coincidences and treat them like a sort of sign. Basically I took a bit of York's personality, though thankfully I haven't become a smoker like he is.
The opening sequence already hinted at everything. After York escapes the car crash and meets Emily for the first time, George appears out of the woods York just came from, even though there is nothing else in that direction. Also, the fact that the dog is literally the evil mastermind, which is just amazing. Shame not many people saw this game through to its end. If you want to see a complete let's play, I would recommend Supergreatfriend.
I thought the father twist ending was gonna happen because York stops to push boxes *instead of stepping around,* and the Raincoat Killer stops to smash mannequins *instead of stepping around.* 🤣
This video is phenmenal. I've never seen someone put so much effort in a gem so unknown from most of their audience. I've never played it but the idea around a Twin Peaks with horror tricks is so good! This gem deserves a high budget sequence with full control of their creators. Loved the video!
Just stumbled on your channel and can't get enough of these long reviews. You do such a fantastic job at narrating the story, I feel I could listen to you explain paint drying. Keep up the great work and amazing videos 👍🏻🤓👍🏻
As someone who played this when it came out, you're very first statement rings true. I'm devoted to this game with a cult-like passion, and I've accepted my fate
I was about to complain about Diane being alive even after getting her tongue cut out, cause you'd bleed to death from that. I then decided that's not the hill I want to die on given how (amazingly) ridiculous this game is Edit: this comment is for the algorithm cause I want that DP2 video! I tried to play it and gave up haha
The big question this game asks to me is ‘can amazing style, intention, creative focus and attention to detail make up for a lack of game design and technical quality’ because like, no one can accuse it of not having amazing heart and concept but it gets dragged down by its execution so much
I remember this game, i used to play it as a child like 10-9 when on the ps3 it was so strange and I remember vividly being stuck at the art gallery part because i would just go around doing random stuff eating meals, smoking cigarettes and fishing, this was wild and honestly would very much like to replay it now
I've now watched all your video essays and am looking forward to the next ones. I've just watched them all in a row for the past few days. very good job. ☺️☺️☺️
@@TotallyPointlessTV I can't believe it's already been a year I've been following you and your long-style game videos, but I want you to know how much I bloody love your style of content. I truly do hope you grow at a great rate and rack in that cash money mulah 👏
I don't know if its just me, but York reminds me of Dennis from Always Sunny. The way he just keeps talking about and to himself is just hilarious and really reminds me of the ego maniac Dennis is.
That royalty free sound they used is also the same one used for when you traverse the painting in Dark Souls 1. Idk why it was so popular around this time.
I love this game so much like I played this with a friend over the course of our senior year in high school and every bit of its jankiness is so dear to me. I would love a video on the sequel!
Your gaming content is really good. Its different from the normal videogame commentary were someone overly shits on a game or says its best thing in the world. Thank you for your content.
not pretentious either, he's describing the game and his experiences in a very casual but still passionate way, while so many others like acting as if they are videogame critics or journalists, it's annoying.
@@nick-wy7fgAngry Joe comes to mind. He used to be quite enjoyable back in 2010-2014. He was fairly funny and witty. I stopped watching after he got lazier and started nitpicking a ton over dumb things.
Im one of those people that loves this game like its my own child, hearing ppl say they hate it immediately lets me know theyre boring and lack any sense of fun.
I loved everything about this. The video, the formatting, and the game. The way you present this information is really entertaining and captivating in a way I haven't been able to enjoy in a moment. Never got to play my copy of Deadly Premonition 2 cuz I lent it to my m8 a few years back while we were still friends. Never got the game back. I hope that dedicated DP2 vid comes out(or is already out if you're late or I'm dumb)
frankly to me DP2 is a downgrade compared to the original in pretty much every aspect, except for this soundtrack, which I really like: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Uw2e_VaWUsM.htmlfeature=shared
Love this game! So happy it has become a cult classic. The bones are there, just some tweaking of where they cut corners to save cash is all. I think it’s brilliant overall and would love to see it as a movie, with Naomi Watts playing Emily of course! Always thought she looked like her lol!
I loved this game immensely. At first I was really disappointed with how easy it was to figure out who the killer was, but then...well, other things happened.
Thanks for making this video. I love this game to bits. Behind the graphics and mechanics it has so much personality and soul. I love how random and quirky it is
When the Two Best Friends (RIP) played this many years ago, I fell in love with the whistling theme and made it my ringtone. It was just so catchy and charming. Evidently, I wasn't the only one to think so because since then many people such as MandaloreGaming have used it as background or credits music. While I changed my ringtone long ago, even the subtlest hint of that tune makes me shoot awake/alert to this day.
After getting a save file corrupted, pushing through repetitive crashes, and rushing almost to the end, I've given up and watch a spoiler video for this game - probably will finish it and complete all achievements later but man... definitely one of the games of all time.
I love your videos brother, especially the game reviews ive been binge watching your stuff i genuinely enjoy them and love the humor you crack me up bro i hope you keep making the gaming vids
I can definitely see this game having major cult worship around it, even years after it came out, anyone whose SUPER Chaotic-Neutral and LOVES surreal randomness and improvisions will love something like this 👌
Never heard about this game, but this video really makes me want to play it. The janky animations really remind me of Yakuzas substory cutscenes that I’ve grown to love too lol.
I love hearing "Mandus" at the end of almost every video. It just tells me that it's time to reflect on all that the video guided me through. And the song itself is beautiful, and it always takes me back to one of the most powerful endings to a game I've played. Great choice in music.
I've heard about this game for a long time and had really no idea what to expect. This mostly genuine recap of the events of the story makes me realize this might actually be an amazing narrative with amazing writing. Thanks for showcasing it in this video.
