Deadly Solo from Winslow

Flying for Money

A recreation and analysis of a deadly Cirrus SR22 airplane crash that occurred in the desert between New Mexico and Arizona. The parachute was never deployed by the pilot. The airplane most likely encountered icing and eventually impacted terrain. The pilot and sole occupant died in the fatal crash.

Every generation of GA has a "Doctor Killer" in it. This just happens to the time of the Cirrus. It's not the plane's fault, obviously. It - and the Bonanza before it - just hit the right notes for a demographic that is affluent, smart, and busy enough that expediency and currency often takes a backseat to good aeronautical decision making. FWIW, I am that demographic. I run a company, I can afford to fly, and I am always have two tasks queued behind the next thing to work on. I watch these videos to keep my head straight. I fly to relax. I don't need to be anywhere. I can turn off the distractions when I go up. But I know I could someday be guilty of "get there itis", which is why I appreciate channels like yours.
@raoulcruz4404

You are right about the “doctor killer” moniker. Bonanza, Cessna 210, Piper Malibu. When the new generation of high performance aircraft appears , it’s the affluent that usually purchase them. Usually transitioning from a more mundane aircraft.

What can be so important that a newer, less experienced pilot with tenuous skills would take that gamble and refuse to take the opportunity to stay put for the night and get home safely the next day? Couldn't help but get a sick feeling in the pit of my stomach when you know the tragic outcome, and think of the literally scores of people in her life that will be mourning her loss. What amazes me is that, as a non-pilot, I can see where these general aviation pilots who crashed were getting into trouble before they even took off. If someone like me can see it, why can't they? I think something needs to change in private pilot education. If it took her 100 hours to get her private license, someone should have said something. These flight schools are sending people up who aren't qualified to be pilots.

Something that helps with the decision process is insurance. Sometimes pilots try to save the airplane because of the monetary loss they might suffer. I don’t know if Gina carried insurance. I think it’s called Open Pilot Warranty. That covers the pilot regardless of who’s plane he/she is flying. She may have been reluctant to pull the chute knowing it’s on her dime. Just saying as an example. She might have not recognized the problem early enough and just didn’t react in time.

Frankly, no one knows the primary reason. But I get the impression she got easily flustered or uncomfortable with new challenges. Flying a cirrus between layers shouldn't have required a divert. I find my self constantly defending the Cirrus on videos like this and also it's CAPS parachute system. I find the plane gets blamed for the mistakes of the pilots all the time. I did all my training in 152's and 172's and I do believe we should all start there with steam gauges. With that being said I have airline pilot friends who fly 15+ year old airframes who are jealous of the avionics/auto pilot capabilities of this aircraft. We all know single pilot ifr is difficult, however barring a reroute or an issue on the approach (neither of which happened here) this should be cake walk for this plane if everything was properly set up. Even the icing which they didn't say she mad any attempt to get out of the Cirrus can handle it fairly well until you are clear of it . And let's say the engine failed or the wings stopped producing lift due to ice the airplane can handle that...

Hurrying is something I feel many people struggle with to slow down and qualify the risks involved. As you said, probably moreso in this case with the inconveniece that she felt her situation would put on others. This is a really sad accident, doubly so because the plane had a parachute that was never pulled. Do you know if she had time to pull it but tried to recover the plane instead (stalled), or if she flew straight into terrain? The report was very brief and they didn't mention any flight data from the computers.
@flyingformoney777
@flyingformoney777 Год назад
I think this particular crash occurred before the implementation of ADS-B, so there was no telemetry for the flight. There was no mention of basic radar data either. The debris field was 600 feet long and slanted uphill. The NTSB makes a distinct point about the ice, so perhaps she iced up and lost control (I don’t think even they know for sure). The airframe parachute is a great device, but unless the pilot routinely dry runs emergency procedures, it is altogether possible to forget it’s there in a high stress, high threat situation.

I am working my way towards my PPL and will probably have greater than 100 hours by the time I finish. This is because I've taken many leisure cross country flights with my instructor just for fun, as well as just taking the plane up solo and flying for fun with no particular place to go. Anyway, keep the videos coming. It's always good to have these reminders to stay on our toes and not get complacent or think it won't happen to me.

You are correct that the 100 hours by itself can have many different explanations. The NTSB saw fit to mention it so I did as well.

It certainly does mean something. You’re lack of drive or ambition you get your license more expeditiously could certainly mean your level of comfort is lacking. Most all the people I’ve flow with that took 1.5-2 times the legal limit aren’t good sticks regardless their reasons.

@@Captndarty It CAN mean something. Doesn't mean it DOES mean something.

No way 100 hours for private is 50% above average.

National average is 60-70 hours. Add 50% to 66 hours, you are at 100. Lots of people commented on this aspect of the video. NTSB doesn’t normally include hours-to-private-pilot in their published report, but they did here…
