Killing someone over a gambling debt is still senseless. Because now you’re going to prison; and prison is not worth whatever was owed. First degree means you’re doing life in prison.
They were both employed at VTA. Well paid government jobs with benefits. So the victim could afford to pay back whatever debt over time. But apparently that dumb criminal didn't consider that.
Unarmed security, too! They may as well of just hired some of those blue shirt guys they had walking the streets in LA. Community Ambassadors, I think they called them.
They're just doing it to make the employees feel like they're doing something to protect them. Obviously, there's nothing that could have stopped this shooting. Many years ago, I worked as a consultant and for me to get hired, they did a number of checks: background, tested me for drugs and they also ran a credit check, the only job I've had that did that. They gave me a company credit card and I guess they didn't want to hire someone that had a ton of money issues. The only thing I can see companies doing they may help is running a credit check, which to me is kinda invasive. But if you see someone has a ton of financial issues, you might want to not hire them.
VTA is not a toxic workplace at all. my father retired from as a coach operator after 41 years. It is sad that all this is happening yes everyone there would literally give you the shirt off of their back. If there was a drivers family that needed food the union fellow coworkers. Have always gone beyond their duty to help another fellow out.
Interesting. The "officials" and Sheriff's Office are concerned about public access and security, and while that is laudable, this crime and the earlier one were committed by Transit Employees on other Transit Employees.
I'm Asian and as crazy as this sounds, gambling in the Asian world is different than a couple Americans making a bet. I'm not agreeing at all but I have seen first hand the heated emotions of betting and owing money amongst Asian men, it's scary!
It must have been substantial. Most gamblers know to always own up to their debt. Heck, I don't even promise anyone anything if I was buying a P-Ball ticket. People can even collect on a verbal promise.
My god. Nothing is the same anymore. Just when you think it can't happen here it does eventually. So very sad, my deep condolences to the man and his family.
They've been heavy in the news for about 2yrs. I first noticed them when that guy in that apartment sprayed some type of chemical into that lady's apartment & got her sick & the doctor couldn't understand what was wrong with her
Who tf loans someone money to gamble? That has to be one of the worst decisions but then the person ones up themselves by going to prison for life? Not the sharpest tool...
A “senseless” crime? No. He owed debt and paid the price. Don’t get involved in shady activities and pay your debts and bad things are much less likely to happen to you. Makes total sense.
Yes, it was a senseless crime. They both were bus drivers at VTA, receiving a steady income. Whatever debt could have been paid over time. Don't defend stupidity.
Callous as this sounds, this killing was equivalent to being self-inflicted due to his own actions and addiction. Spend time the wrong crowd and you will likely end up as a perpetrator, a witness or a victim - just like his killer did.
The Authorities aren't going to let this slide. All Gambling & Betting should be made through offical State Registered Gambling Entities so the State gets its cut. This is outrageous and the State will send the message.
This is why I don't gamble, PERIOD! You have no idea if you're going to be one of those people who get addicted to it and feel compelled to keep it up. Next thing you know, you're gambling your mortgage money! If you want to gamble, do it in the stock market. At least if you lose your money there, the only person you have to answer to is yourself.
I thought this was going to be a tragic story of workplace abuse and retaliation. Maybe a story of envy or untreated mental illness. Turns out it’s just to bums fighting over poker, crazy.
I was wondering why this wasn't called a hate crime then I they should the suspect was Asian. But I'm sure if the suspect wasn't Asian the media would be called this a hate crime.
so weird how we seemingly are just sliding backwards. I sure miss the old Bay Area. I must be too old to understand why we needed to change. I go to 408 a fair amount and it bares little resemblance of it as a kid. Silicon Valley and the third world... We seemingly prefer ghettobehavior
