We're back! Here's a life update video. In this video we visit Ryan's childhood doctor who is familiar with Deaf patients. We talk about Ryan's experience as a Deaf person going to the doctor and my experience of interpreting the visit. At the end of the video I open up about my mental health and it being one of the reasons why we took a break from RU-vid this past month.

I loved the q&a’s but I’m really glad the vlogs are coming back. Also it means a lot to hear you talk about mental health. It’s still so stigmatized today and a lot of people avoid talking about it.
@Dean444ful

It’s really not that stigmatized anymore though... people are WAY more aware of it and understanding than they have ever been.
@nisreenkalai8814
@nisreenkalai8814 4 года назад
mitch-bittens I briefly felt that way too and I wish it was true. But I think that when people are going through something people aren’t as willing to help and are less understanding but after going through something people will congratulate you on being healthy but won’t want to actually talk to you about your experience because it’s an uncomfortable topic. A lot of people don’t want to deal with people who are mentally ill or talk about they’re own journey because of getting help is so taboo, you’re expected to solve everything on your own. I hope that made sense 😅

I’m in my 30s and finding it super difficult to learn a new language especially when we’re long distance and I can’t practice it daily, so I’d just like to give you a huge shoutout and say I can relate to just how much love you are showing him by studying and practicing and learning sign language. Question: ASL stands for American Sign Language, right? Has Ryan ever spoken to someone from a different country that speaks a different Sign Language? What would that experience be like? How distinct is American Sign Language from Sign Language of other countries, if at all?
@hazwanee25
@hazwanee25 4 года назад
Hi, from what I know the most common or widely known would be ASL and British Sign Language (BSL). However, each countries have their own. I'm from Malaysia and we use Bahasa Isyarat Malaysia (BIM) which is basically MSL. My friends from Japan and Korea also told me that they have their own SL. As to whether there are any similarities or complete opposites, I would say it's the same as language. Sometimes you can roughly guess what it is and with SL, I find that it's more easier to guess (well maybe that's just me) compare to spoken language. Alphabets are almost 95% same, from what I discovered though.
@emilyh3999
@emilyh3999 4 года назад
ASL has an origin in France. When French people came to the US they brought FSL and sort of combined it with some of the signs here in the US. So with that speaking there are some similarities but very few. People that use FSL can’t really sign to someone know uses ASL.
@nairocamilo
@nairocamilo 4 года назад
It will be different, even if a little. Many signs have translations pertinent to their country's mother spoken language. Example: When Ryan signed "ready" (the R sign being shaken), it would mean nothing for someone interpreting LIBRAS (Brazilian sign language), since the same word is "pronto" or "preparado" (the P sign oscillating in front of the torso). _that's my take_
@splehcar
@splehcar 4 года назад
Y'might be interested in this: www.reddit.com/r/asl/comments/ewtmnf/sign_language_family_tree/? It links to an image of all Sign Languages and shows which SL developed from which SL. Like, for example: ASL developed mostly from LSF (French SL) The image isn't completely accurate though; for one thing, it leaves out Nicaraguan SL. But. That being said... it's a good illustration of what SLs are related to what SL.

It’s so important to find medical professionals you trust. I have had similar problems. I have a facial difference and finding a dentist I trust has been a challenge. Recently I’ve had a problem with a tooth that wasn’t fully taken out 5 years ago. So I called the amazing oral surgeon I saw for it 5 years ago and he is the absolute best. So I know how good it feels to be able to just go back to a doctor after a long stretch of time. Happy to see it will get taken care of!

In my forties I had two hernia operations about a year or two apart. The doctors said they were caused by genetic issues. They weren't particularly painful, but just a royal pain in the ass because I had to keep pushing the bulge back up inside. The first one was done at the VA and they made an old style incision. The second one was done with three little holes in my lower abdomin where they inserted tools to do the job instead of cutting me open, and that was somewhere around 30 years ago. It is usually done as an Out-Patient procedure. Also, do you know that dogs can tell when their humans are in distress of have a physical problem. They can smell it ! I am also still trying to process how much Ryan looks like Matt Damon. You two are a wonderful couple and training your dog to understand sign language, or at least gestures proves that you are a great couple. BRAVO !!!

You both are amazing! Ellen, I graduated this year too and it was hard to not be able to walk the stage like I’ve been working so hard for. I also really get the mental health issues,. Last year, I had really bad depression that developed because of my untreated anxiety disorder, it got to the point where I couldn’t get out of bed unless it was to show up at work or class (be there physically, but not mentally at all... I was checked out). I am really lucky to have such a great husband because he really stepped up with all of the childcare (we have two kids) like getting them to school and playing and homework, cooking for everyone and making sure I was eating enough and really just being there. Having a supportive partner is so, so, so helpful for getting through it 🤟🏼

Ellen, I understand you! University was a hard time for me, especially the last couple of years, and I had to graduate via Teams call. I also have a boyfriend who has been my rock during those tough years, just like Ryan, and since we don’t live together yet he wasn’t able to be present at my graduation. I know it’s hard, but now you get to do what you love the most with the person you love the most! Congratulations on your graduation! Love you two and your videos! ❤️

Hi, I am hearing impaired in both ears (I was told I was sick and had ear infection) but thank god I am still alive. I can speak and reads lip. I've been in the medical field for 5 years now as a medical assistant. Ever since the masks was required, I had hard time everyday understanding what people are saying. My coworkers tells me to put my hearing aids on which I do. I can hear that they are speaking to me, but still not able to understand what was said. Everyday I have to remind my team to put their mask down so I can understand what they said (and I leave my mask on). It a 50/50 (what I mean is half of them are OK with the plan and the other half aren't.) At the end I still get the job done. My husband is who I depend on outside when I need him to translate for me what is going on and I love him for that. We love watching your guys video. Thank you for sharing and please do continue to do so. Stay safe. :)

I’m not hearing impaired, but the pandemic really made me realize how much I rely on reading lips! I’ve always been aware that I read lips while listening to people, but I didn’t realize how heavily I depend on it. I feel like I take more time to process what someone is saying when I’m just looking at their mask/eyes, it’s crazy. I’m glad you’re able to work around it, and hopefully those clear masks will become mainstream so more hearing impaired people can be accommodated :)

Thanks for sharing about your personal struggles, Ellen. You just assume everyone else is and has always been doing fine. But no, I've been through anxiety, too- and my hubby was a huge support and help to survive that time:) I love these videos!! :)

I started taking ASL class this Winter after wanting to learn since I was a kid. I just discovered your channel and have watched probably 10 or more of your videos in the past two days! I love your videos so much! It's great to learn more about Deaf Culture, pick-up on and learn new signs, hear about how you communicate and just see a couple sharing their ups and downs about life!! Sorry you've been going through a tough time, Ellen, with finishing college, and hearing about your struggles in the past. Hear you talk about this, you are not alone and it reminds me that I an not alone in certain struggles I've had with anxiety too. And Ryan hope the Hernia surgery comes quickly and the pain goes away very soon! Thank Sign Duo! You two rock!!!!
