They were simply the greatest singing quartet there ever was. Extending the legacy of the 1956 champion quartet the Confederates, who introduced jazzy rhythms and arrangements into barbershop harmony, the Dealer's Choice went on to codify the science of barbershop singing and usher the era of technique singing. I was most fortunate to be an active member of our singing society in those days and to have known the DC intimately.
This tribute was something Grady Kerr and I put together to celebrate the DC's 10th anniversary. Grady would come to my studio at WFAA-TV (ABC) in Dallas after hours and we would work on it. He would provide the copy and I narrated and assembled the audio. As a new Barbershopper back then, this was wonderful experience to learn about the quartet. Over the years I have become friends with all 4 of them and Bill Thornton and I have a celebratory birthday lunch each year. We were both born on April 20th..
