DEALER Gave a $3500 Estimate for BRAKES! Fords Escape Brake Pedal Sinks

This 2009 Ford Escape came in for a second opinion after having the an inspection done at the Ford Dealer. The dealer recommend that the customer replace the brake master cylinder and the ABS control unit. During a test drive, we were unable to duplicate the concern. The main concern was a falling brake pedal while stopped. This suggested that there is a possible leaking master cylinder, the seals internally may be intermittently bypassing. The other possibility is an internal leak at the ABS control unit. Before we left the parking lot, we found that the rear wheels were locking up in low traction environments such as the parking lot gravel. During the lockup, I we observed that the ABS pump did not actuate. The rear drum brakes were inspected for the correct parts and correct installation. We also check the other shops work during the inspection. We had to choose that most likely cause of the lockup and the sinking pedal condition. Due to cost, we chose to replace the brake master cylinder as it was far less costly than a ABS hydraulic control unit.

I agree. I’ve learned so much watching Ray’s channel. One thing is that a bunch of this stuff is beyond my capability (or beyond my desire to deal with weird designs that require you to remove half the engine to replace a spark plug). Thanks Ray for sharing your knowledge, and by the way, great rant.

Hello from Malaysia, I'm a premature mechanic of 3 cars, I've been watching your videos since before the company issue many many years ago, new shop and rebuilding your self esteem with Wife Unit, and how you've explained your methods, is not like any other mechs out there, you perform at your best, disregard what other people say about you. You're The Rainman Ray! We subscribers are looking out for you, all over the globe 😊 PS: I've been learning a lot from you btw, extremely appreciative at what you do! Much love from Malaysia 😊

That is the reason I will not work mechanic jobs for dealerships... not to disrespect the good mechanics that do work dealerships but the main company is all about money and they will sometimes sacrifice honesty and integrity for income... I prefer to do mechanic/welding work for a shop like yours who doesn't have to answer to some corporate chain and where honesty and integrity make or break customer satisfaction. Keep up the good work Ray and continue to show how a real shop owner/mechanic should interact with customers and their vehicles and spend the time to truly diagnose a problem to the best of your ability instead of unleashing the $$$$ parts cannon like others do.

Back in the 80s bought a brand new car, two weeks old. Stolen and recovered with a damaged steering wheel and steering column. The dealer replaced the damaged parts an gave it back to me with the steering wheel not on straight. I asked the service manager to correct that. He said----"you need a front end alignment, the steering wheel goes on only one way, $79.95""" No way, I drove the car home, took the cover off the center of the steering wheel, removed the nut holding the wheel on, repositioned the wheel on the splined shaft. NEVER TRUST DEALERS--BIG TIME THEIVES.

Meh. The diag tool didn't indicate the need for the pump but the symptoms did. Chance are, for the FREE diagnosis, the dealer didn't use their diag tool. (IIRC, my dealer charges $200 for a full diagnosis.) Given that this owner didn't want the brake cylinders replaced or a fluid flush, there's a fair chance he was at the dealer for his free diagnosis, then walked away.

If you want to diag a M. cyl , push the brake pedal down very slow with no pressure . If you can sneak the pedal down , the M. cyl is gone or about to fail . If the pedal won't sneak down , then the M. cyl most likely good .

@@don2deliver I've found mechanic owned shops that let you buy your own parts from Auto Zone or O'Reily's and just charge you for labor. Why on Earth would you take a 15 year old Ford Escape that's worth practically nothing to a dealership? The ABS unit can be bypassed and just let the brakes operate without it.

I've owned many vehicles for 47 years. Until more recent time with all of the electronics I have driven my vehicles to the carwash and pressure washed them while hot. Nothing ever happened. Now about twice a year I use a household degreaser in a spray bottle and some paper towels and clean it all up. I then hit it with a Armoral type silicone detailer. My car is 13 years old and the engine bay is clean and shinny.

I have always kept my engines clean on all the cars I have owned. I have never used a pressure washer on the engine as they are too powerful and force moisture into the electrics. If the engine is particularly dirty and oily then I first spray it down with kerosine and then hose it off. If you spray with kero first then most of the water just beads off. I don't expect mechanics to work on dirty oily engines. I have never cracked a head or exhaust manifold by cleaning my engines. I have owned a number of cars over the past 55 years or so. I'm now 76.

The info was useful because he was comparing it to the dealer's parts cannon approach. Both estimates were prepared around the same time, in the same area. If he puts out numbers on a regular basis, it will encourage people to treat those numbers as a useful reference for the price they should expect. And there are a huge pile of reasons that isn't going to be helpful or relevant. Heck, give it a couple of years and his quote for roughly the same work might change quite a bit.

Ray did that right because new designs of master cyls have differences. The neat thing we figured out during a recall, was guys who did the old way would cut a seal inside bottoming it out inside. Intalled in the car is better. Like Ray did. Then the helper puts one foot under and one foot depressing the pedal for each stroke. Then the new part doesnt suffer a mystery failure from bottoming out the pedal. Some applications its the thing that makes the difference. Hope this adds to your joy and pleasure and prevents bewilderment. Sure saved us time and paperwork and loaner cars or rentals for customers. Have a great day. Nice and shiny.

Did Dave have his foot under the pedal? After Ray stroked it by hand? Just curious
@dannylinc6247
@dannylinc6247 6 месяцев назад
@@rickwoods5384 didn't sound like they did. That was why I said that. People who do the full bleed, and old school methods do a lot more bottoming of the pedal and don't realize it's just a part downstroke required and no pumping that quickly removes the air. It's the plan the bleederman has, and his sequence on many vehicles. We only had .6 hours to do ours. Same job, more crap in the way. Guys caused new part failure, so our guys went to help their guys. (Team system) Small groups. Previous decades but same manufacturing. Same brand car. This resembles the BMW use of calipers. Same wave spring hardware. Anyways, not similar in some ways to the instruction sheet. You can't argue with a lot full of cars fixed by a method, versus three cars dead in the shop because the new master cyl received damage. Always depends, on make, model, year, and system used during that build. Ray did better methods. He could further protect a newer style part with not bottoming it out like our General service and lube guy team.

I have removed newly installed master cylinders bench bleeding then reinstalled to get the air out of them. It worked for the ones I did. Trolls are the worst. Keyboard superhero mechanics don’t know real world production issues. The key is this is your business. You want an audience and everyone is waiting to criticize your work. Congratulations on your honest decision in favor of the client. In Mexico, CDMX, in an independent workshop like yours, before changing the brake cylinder and reservoir, two things would have been done: check that the circuit does not have air, bleed it again and if the failure persists, remove the cylinder and buy a replacement. rings, seals etc. and reassemble it to reinstall it, having verified that there are no leaks of course.

One thing I ran into a couple of times in my carreer as a Mechanic on ABS Systems was sitting at a light with brakes appliedthe Peddle would slowly start sinking and what was happening was the pressure was starting to bypass the piston in the master cylinder and going back into the reservoir. and the way I found it was had someone apply the brake pedal while I watched what was happening inside the reservoir and seen the fluid bubbling back into the reservoir while the brakes were applied. They worked good when first applied then under constant pressure would start bypassing. Back then you could actually rebuild the master cylinder a lot cheaper than you could buy one

Master cylinder was replaced about 4 yrs ago. My only question is, I've noticed over the years, there's different DOT codes on brake fluid now, which to use if the book doesn't specify? Ray, keyboard warriors are just jealous because they're not as intelligent to do this work themselves. Great video as always, cheers :)

Use to use the scan tool on a test drive to monitor the wheel speed sensors. If I found a WSS drop out and the brake pedal going to the floor, guess what, I replaced the bad wheel speed sensor. This step can help differentiate between a master cylinder and wheel speed sensor. BG does make good products. When I was in the business I stocked their products.

Good Job, that is what Hancock told them! As a GM Dealership brake tech {47 yrs} I understand all to well! As anti-lock brakes came into the market we had a whole bunch of complaints to deal with. I noticed a common complaint was {pedal goes to floor and I cannot stop}. I took a look at it from the customers point of view. How often do they activate ABS, and do they know what it is when it is activated? I started taking customers for a test drive in their own vehicles. I would go to City Soccer Fields and activate ABS on the grass! They would look at me and say, that is the noise I heard. I explained that was the pump running and it is normal. When they knew it was normal and all right, away they went. Mind you I thought it was the salesman job to explain this to customers. I soon realized the salesman knew much less than the customer. I asked the Sales Manager' who is telling the customers they never have to air up tires because there is a tire pump built in each tire? Although you did not duplicate the problem, based on age, milage, the brake master cylinder was the logical choice. Don

Just a shadetree, but I'll make an educated guess and say the bleeder valve on the master supersedes attaching fittings to both ports and bleeding that way. The included instructions being merely a "one size fits most" version written up by a young grad who had at least one technical writing class, and are probably decades old at this point.

Ray just a thought. The trolls just might be other crap channels trying to get your goat. Just piss on them. I watch all your videos and love them. I worked on my cars for years. But quit when all the sensors were added. I learn so much watching you with these newer vehicles. Just know all the channels hate the good ones and try to tear them down. Stay the course and hope the family is doing well.

Ray, we got some issues with our vehicle at the track where the pedal went to the floor. The issue was a bent wheel hub, causing the brake disk to wave and push on the pads. Our have cylinders on both side, with a big bypass channel between both. What happened is that when the disk pushed on one side pad/cylinder, it pushed the fluid on the other side cylinder, keeping the same overall distance. But a tiny tiny amount of fluid get pushed back to the reservoir. With a bit of time, enough fluid got pushed back that the pedal went to the floor. Was a real pain to diagnose the issue, as everything bench tested fine. The diagnostics involved replacing the master cylinder first, like you did, because we tought it was bypassing. Surprise, same issue. Then noticed the waving disk, so replaced the disk, no change. Hey it's still waved! . . . Found the bent hub... what a pain.. Replaced it and fixed.

I'm sure it's easier said than done and everyone's personality is different. Having said that I've noticed an uptick in RU-vid mechanics letting armchair mechanics get under their skin, when you acknowledge them they win. It shows they have power over you. I will leave you with a paraphrase from one of the greatest game trilogies ever made: "I will inflict upon them the greatest insult an enemy can suffer. To be ignored." keep on keepin on Ray!

Ray 1 thing I didn't see you check was wheel speed. A faulty wheel speed sensor could be dropping off intermittently, which would trigger a false ABS stop. I've had previously monitored wheel speed and as the truck would stop all 4 wheels would indicate same wheel space then RF wheel speed would drop to 0 mph which would fool the ABS Module into thinking RF was locking up which it wasn't and the pedal would drop ABS Module would cycle without ever setting a failure code.

Thexton makes a sweet bleeding and plug kit with hose . It allows you to bleed the old way with hoses in the reservoir OR solid blocking plugs. I prever to use my Phoenix Injector to reverse bleed master then install solid plugs and watch for limited piston movement 1/8" or less. Dont have power bleeder machine in my shop. Boss bought the little plastic snap on air powered one. I really dont like the cap adapters it uses. I actually bought the cap kit from Phoenix Systems. And it helps in bleeding full reline of brake system. I've even got to bleeding my hydraulic control units outside of the car and then bleeding the lines to either side of it. This reduces the need to use a scan tool to bleed the ABS.

basics check front and rear brake condition , bleed brakes , check DTC without ABS master cylinder could be bypassing ,, does vehicle have a rear load valve ? grabbing of brakes occurs when mis match of surface finish . A quality pad set and a machined disc and drums are the same way . Adjustment if not tight enough will cause delayed then grabby brakes also Are shoes installed leading trailling ,, Some Toyota are installed reverse to prevent lockup

Had a similiar issue with my car, 3 different outfits looked at it and couldn't find what was wrong, in the end it turned out to be a bypassing master cylinder as they coudn't figure out what caused the issue they started just replacing parts, the importer for our country of the brand (SEAT) covered all the expenses under warranty (about 2000 euro for parts and 2400 euro for troubleshooting)

All you guys who think its not nessary to change brake fluid, have you ever taken apart a caliper piston and found rust inside it? Thats because brake fluid and water mix you would think that water can't get in the system, your wrong. The plastic let's water in because the modules let vapor pass its slow but it can pass. This was an article In a mechanics mag back in the 90s my boss had read. But I've rebuilt several slave cylinders and calipers on my cars over the last 45 years.
