In this video I am talking about a common plant problem with growing coconut palms indoors. Rotting coconuts on coconut palms is something I get asked about frequently, here's how I deal with it.

I love the progress your coconut palm has made since you potted it up. I remember how I used to hang out on my dad's ship in the Indian ocean and I would see coconuts floating out in the middle of the ocean ... i always wondered if those ever would find land and end up growing 🙂 like a message in a bottle i used to chuck overboard every day 😅

What a beautiful memory! I also was fascinated by them when I'd find them on the beach as a kid. Something special about wondering what their travel was like. Perhaps hundreds if not thousands of miles drifting through the sea, lol, or they just came around the corner from the nearest bay😅🤣 I like to think of them as mystical and wise seeds.

Hey Jeff...I've been hoping to find your video and it's 4am in Nokomis, Florida and here I am FINALLY watching it! First, thank you for speaking English. I've watched over 100 videos on Coconut Bonsai. They're all from Indonesia and sometimes have auto-translate which is "iffy." I buy sprouted coconuts from a guy in Cape Coral who collects them from neighbors. I'm also trying to sprout some from a few trees we have here in my neighborhood. I have twenty years of traditional bonsai training with the great Eric Wigert in Ft. Meyers, Florida, and have recently discovered Coconut Bonsai on RU-vid. I was doing pretty well with about fifty living c'nuts but the recent cold spell knocked out about 90% of them. Based on your video I now realized I also overwatered the seed. Thank you, thank you, thank you...I needed to know that!!! I am strictly a 75 year old hobbyist and have a RU-vid channel under my name, Jim Koeniger. I would appreciate you viewing it if you have time. I try to keep my videos to 10 minutes but some are longer. I look forward to watching YOUR videos and have subscribed. I will be doggedly pursuing Coconut Bonsai and will buy some more plants to work on now that we're finished with the cold weather. l have so many more questions but I'll save them for later. Hi Jeff. Very interesting stuff. I love to see coconut palms on holiday, the essence of tropical. Even in NE uk they sell them in the supermarket for £10. I've thought about trying to grow one but I'm convinced I would end up killing it off with our 6 hours of daylight during December 😢. Great to hear from you as always. Have a good week. Looking forward to the grow space updates over the winter, an absolute highlight for me👍. Cheers

Hey you! Been loving the garden pics on instagram! Maybe coconuts won't do well in your area, but you have some awesome things going on already! Gorgeous plants! ... and if you do get one and kill it, then you're part of the 99% of people that kill them. Myself included.

Ahhhh, the dreaded Coconut Palm! Up here in Ontario, Canada the Longest one I could grow before it went to Palm heaven was about 4 year's and other's about 2-3 year's. I thought about growing another one but after watching this video it brought back nightmares! lol😃👍🌴

😂 yeah they are a pain sometimes. I feel like the first year is the hardest, then they do great for about 2 years, then they go back to being wimps like they are the first year, and then finally by year four or five they die for most people. What awesome plants! 😂🤣😅

Hi Jeff! I enjoyed this video even though I have no plans on growing a coconut palm at this time. I always enjoy all of your videos, so anything you talk about is ok with me! I see you will be doing longer vlogs and that makes me happy. I love the shorter ones, too, and like I said, I totally enjoy ALL of your videos. Thank you so much for sharing!

Aww! Thank you, Sandy! Yeah I took a break from the vlogs for a few weeks while I had family in town who helped me get the plants ready to go and with other heavy lifting projects. However, I filmed a lot over the weeks so next weeks video is looking like it will be long, perhaps obnoxiously long😅

hi Jeff! Glad u talked about this! I wanted to experiment with coconut palms in my climate but I'm afraid its way too hot and dry during the summer and too wet and cool during the winter. Should i try anyway?
@TropicalPlantParty
@TropicalPlantParty 3 года назад
As long as you start off knowing that most of the time they die withing a few years for even the most expert level gardens, then there's no reason not to try. Who knows, maybe you'll discover something key to keeping them alive.

Two thoughts 1st you could put a beach scene with mini garden or even go to the used item store find a doll and put swim suits or even dollar stores or mermaid theme so it pulls the seashells into a decorate theme. Wild animals like seals and seagulls flamigos ect. Okay so much for lame ideas! 2nd is a question. Did you do a how to start the coconut out and can a store bought work?

Hey Jeff! I moved mine in about a month ago when the nighttime temperatures started to become less stable. Its been between 68-84 degrees inside (depending on the day). I've only watered it about 3 times in a month. Humidity is between 55-70%. Do you think it will do okay inside under these conditions? I have a 2 inch layer of lava rock in the bottom of the pot, and basically a mix of 50% high quality potting mix and 50% sand. ALSO! I just thought of this with you video. What about using aragonite as a top dress? *reeftanks* You'll know what Im talking about.
@cattfishing
@cattfishing 3 года назад
In my own experience, having mine in the same condition and nearly the same substrate (the addition of charcoal). They do just fine. As long as they dont get too much water. Like he said in the video, its definitely the number 1 killer (in my case) lol they seem to handle missed waterings better than over watering. Boy have I killed many with my wierd need to be constantly doing something with my plants and stupidly choosing to water of all things every single time.lol anyway, sorry for the very long "yes," and I hope my rambling wasn't totally useless..oh, one more thing. adding a lot of extra holes for drainage!
@TropicalPlantParty
@TropicalPlantParty 3 года назад
Yes! Agree and relate to everything Kat said. Less is more inside with watering.

Couldn't you apply sulfur powder to help control fungal rot? Just a thought.

Definitely an option, I just avoid it because of the toxicity.

You can add turmeric or cinnamon powder 1tsp with water every week to prevent any rots🌴🌴🥥🥥 Btw what's the highest summer temperature in your place?
@TropicalPlantParty
@TropicalPlantParty 3 года назад
I've used cinnamon but never tried turmeric, thanks for that tip! Highest temps are usually between 100F and 105F... but it's mostly in the mid to lower 90s. The triple digit days are few and far between.

I tried to grow a tree from a coconut bought at the store, i have read that they needs 15 days to sprout, but after 20 days there is nothing and yesterday it make a sound and the liquid started to go through one of the holes, it smells not good, i guess it's just rooting and nothing more is going to happen... what did i do wrong?

Hi I ordered a coconut with the endocaps now is rotten my coconut is dying but still life in the root, I peeled everything off except where the root are, I’m scared peeling it there, my question how can I revive it, and what kind of soil, now it’s in the water.
