Neem oil has proven to be quite beneficial. Basically, a couple of teaspoons of oil plus 1 teaspoon of washing up liquid dissolved in water will do the trick. It disrupts their breeding cycle and a spray every 6 weeks will sort the problem out. Greenfly is particularly partial, it seems to chillies in our greenhouse.

I use the water with soap method but I also add some vegetable oil in the spray bottle, I spray the whole plant till it's dripping then let it dry up the bugs then I use the water to spray their dried bodies off. I get the green aphids here in Texas so when they get all brown is when I know they're dead.

When we had lots of rose bushes, we planted garlic in the flower beds. That took care of the aphids on the roses. The dirt smelled like garlic, but that was OK as we don't eat dirt!! LOL

Aphids are known to hatch in early spring (some wintered over eggs) and some are attracted in by the application of high nitrogen fertilizer. I wait as long as I can to apply in later spring. 2) second hatch is near August, after hot spells. When you know when to watch for them, it helps on the daily hunt. Good timing on this video, they are pasky and difficult to elmminate.

Good video will try the dish soap and water trick. Good to know that lady bugs and other bugs will help with this chore. 2 years ago I lost a Burning bush to these critters and my remaining one is almost totally destroyed. I wonder if there is still hope for it. When I first noticed them last year I picked off the ends of the shoots where they were but I guess I didn't get them all. Thanks for posting the video!

I guess that is the best solution. We just need to provide shelter to the beneficial insects so that they have a comfortable place to multiply. I am tired of all the pests as they come from nowhere just after one season free. The white aphids are so small that they easily penetrated the mosquito screen net I made to cover the plants.

Jeff Gagne Hi Jeff, I used this method last year for the first time on roses and seem to remember putting a couple of teaspoons of powder to about a litre of water and about the same this year. It certainly works. I'll measure more precisely next time and with different and recorded concentrations. By the way, I believe that the Queen's gardeners use it on the roses at Buckingham Palace. I had horrible aphids on spinach plants to the point where I couldn't keep up with them and just tore them out, broke my heart. Then they went on my bell peppers and I actually watched a video about using the soapy water with a couple drops of peppermint essential oil mixed in, and I had squash bugs on my cucumber plants everyday, and I used that mixture and I use it on all my plants. Tomatoes, bell peppers, cucumbers, lettuce you name it and don't seem to have a problem anymore. I've never seen another squash bug, not once from the day I started using it so that's my go-to for now.

How do I kill aphids whilst protecting the hoverflies which are covering our plum tree, we also have a problem with lots of blue bottle type flies in the area of the tree? I have washed the tree, cur dead wood out and cleaned the area underneath with Jeyes fluid but nothing seems to help.
@GrowVeg
@GrowVeg 7 лет назад
It's a tricky one, as what you do to kill the aphids is highly likely to compromise the health of the local hoverfly population. This guide to aphids: bigbughunt.com/bug-guides/uk-and-europe/rose-aphid/ and this one: bigbughunt.com/bug-guides/uk-and-europe/aphid/ offer some valuable tips. It may simply be a case of encouraging more of the beneficial bugs - such as hoverflies - into your garden. Then giving the tree a thorough clean in winter with a winter wash, raking up all the leaves etc from beneath the tree, to give a good, clean start for next year.

I grow tansy in differant corners of my garden,when going in blossom the Lady bugs lay all there egg larva on tansy they love it then all the increased population of ladybugs,eat the aphids almost destroy 99%of my aphids for years now I have had the tansy in the gaden and it is a perennial so lady bugs increase every year taking care of most of you aphid and other problems!Oh and bty the way I use to have Squah bug problem and they hate tansy aswell I now have almost 99% free squash bug problem that use to destrot and harm my plants!Also Ants farm apids like humans farm cows and bring the aphids to you plants so ants can suck juice off the aphid!But since ants hate Tansy aswell they mostly stay away from my garden which is excellent cause ants farm and herd and raise apids!Hope this helped! From northeast Connecticut! Hope this helps!Just one warning if you want a pesticide free garden tansy is great but you just need to weed some of it out periodically but Id rather do that then poison my garden or spray the apids of with to much water that could increase the chance of blight which is terrible all over New England states!P.S.Give your tansy atleast ONE to mature to a good size then the ladybugs come back to it every year!Also at the end of the garden season just take some hedge trimmers or clippers and cut the tanzy almost to grond level it comes back every year perennial!Cover root zone with shredded leavs or straw after you cut it to protect the root zone in its early state of life developing!HOPE this HELPED!Please be patient and give it a try for a few years you will totally be surprisingly please on the results on how it attracts ladybug that kill aphis and the great reward is I went from thousands of squash bug to only mybe 50 to a hundred I just hand picked and a prefect season with no squash bugSPLEASE PATIENCE IT WORKS GOOD THE FIRST YEAR BUT FANTASTIC ALL FOLLOWING YEAR!yOU CAN START SEED IN THE HOUSE ABOUT 3 MONTHES AHEAD OF TIME SO IT GETS A GOOD START!THEY ARE TINY SEEDS SO PLANT THEM SHALLOW AND IN HOUSE STARTING POTS! iM NOT SURE BUT i THINK THEY NEED LIGHT TO GERMINATE!wHAT THE HECK GIVE IT A TRY! Sorry to hear that Carolyn. Generally, if you can catch an infestation early enough, it's easy to control them organically. If you can encourage beneficial insects into the garden then they more often than not get on top of the problem before it gets out of hand.

I mix local honey with some water and spray my plants down with it. This attracts ladybugs as well as ants. Ant also feed on aphids (specifically eggs) for their juice. Most people don't like ants tho so this may not be ideal for many. Ants are the main pollinator of my garden since we have very few bees around, so I figure if they're here anyway I may as well encourage them to tend to some plants for me lol
@hxcAMBERhxc
@hxcAMBERhxc 7 лет назад
Same. They sprayed stuff for zika virus here without giving bee keepers proper notice. So sad. Since then I've seen just a small handful of solitary bees (masons and leafcutters) but not much else. Im looking into making some "hotels" for them to boost their population around my gardens but i'll need more spring and fall flowers to sustain them.
@GrowVeg
@GrowVeg 7 лет назад
Bug hotels are a great way of offering solitary bees homes to take up residence in. As you say, it's great if you can offer an on-site supply of nectar to feed them too. We have a video on making a bug hotel - so do check it out for ideas.

I've not heard of using tobacco to make a natural pesticide. I would imagine you would need to steep it somehow to make a tea to use as a spray, but I've not got any experience of doing this, sorry. The best way to control aphids is to encourage their predators, which takes time. Plant flowers to attract the likes of hoverflies close by - underplanting hedges with herbs such as parsley and coriander - left to flower - will draw them in. Hi, we enjoy your videos which are very well produced and informative. I am using an aeroponic system which is in a totally enclosed area. A couple of days ago I noticed some blotches on the leaves and this morning upon further investigation found several aphids under the leaves of the small plants. I removed what I saw and sprayed all the, currently, small plants with soapy water. However, I wonder if you would be so kind as to confirm that the plants will probably recover once the aphids are no longer present, of course I will spray for a few days until I am sure that all is well. Kind regards, Geoffrey in the Czech Republic
@GrowVeg
@GrowVeg 7 лет назад
It depends on whether the blotches were caused directly by the aphids, or by a virus or disease that they spread. If it is a virus or disease, then this has the potential to spread, so I'd probably advise removing the blotchy areas if you can. Certainly removing the aphids will help stop anything spreading further. Your plants may well recover if they are enjoying good growing conditions.

It's hard to say, as it could have been a small parasitic wasp or any number of other insects. I would wait until you can see the beginning of a visible infestation on the plants themselves. But bugs are typically everywhere, so I wouldn't be too concerned at this stage.

Will soapy water impede bees and other pollinators?
@GrowVeg
@GrowVeg 2 года назад
I would avoid spraying soapy water on flowers if you can, just in case. But the idea is that the soapy water coats the insects that are already on the leaves of the plant.

Would the soapy water be bad for ladybugs?
@xx-ve3if
@xx-ve3if 7 лет назад
good question!
@GrowVeg
@GrowVeg 7 лет назад
The soapy water should only be sprayed onto the aphids. It suffocates them and they slip off the plant. If there are ladybugs on the same plants then do not spray - leave the plants well alone and let the ladybugs to the control for you. Soapy water isn't a pernicious pesticide, so if a ladybug lands on a plant that was recently doused with soapy water it shouldn't come to any harm.

i read somewhere that aphids don't like bananas. i had nothing to lose and gave it a shot. put banana peels around the plants. without much hope for it to work i may add. but i was surprised, by the next morning the aphids were gone! apparently there's something like banana water, where a peel or two soakes in a glass of water for 2 days, that one can spray on the plants. didn't try that myself. since i put banana peels out i haven't seen aphids anymore.
@GrowVeg
@GrowVeg 7 лет назад
Wow - had no idea that bananas could do that. I'll definitely be giving this a try!

Garlic+Chilli+warm water does not work. Failed, more bugs the following morning.

Thanks for letting us know your experience of this. Have you tried the soapy water solution? That might work better for you. And we'd always advise trying to attract their predators - that's by far the most effective way of long-term control.

After the initial failed event, I went on and tried water+dish soup. It eventually worked, killing off 90%. Repeat one or two more times. Remember to quick rinse leaves or you'll see burns. Thanks GrowVeg.

It's the ones that are already on there that you're knocking off. Others may fly in and need a similar treatment.

Aphids are useful for ants just pluck a part of the stem where the aphid is feeding and give it to a ant colony then they will make honeydew out of aphids and protect em so its better
@lucyjohnstone1195
@lucyjohnstone1195 7 лет назад
why do ants come when you have ants ,, they don't seem to be eating the ants??
@GrowVeg
@GrowVeg 7 лет назад
A lot of ants 'farm' the aphids. Aphids secrete a sticky substance called 'honeydew', which is basically a sweet sugar-like substance derived from the sap they've sucked from the plant. The ants then feed off this honeydew - it's a sticky treat for them! That's why you often see ants and aphids living together in apparent harmony.

Didn't find this helpful. Squash them all? Stupid, unless you've got a week to spare and super human dedication. Spray with washing up liquid solution? I've been doing this daily for ten days to my plum tree, and it is barely holding them back. Plant pretty flowers around my plum tree? Yeah, sure that'll scare them away. Need to look for something better.
@GrowVeg
@GrowVeg 4 года назад
Hey John, thanks for the feedback. Certainly squashing aphids is more for an early infestation on the tips of new growth - not a whole tree! But planting flowers to encourage their predators really will pay off in the long run. By encouraging a more balanced ecosystem infestations rarely escalate to problem proportions.
