On the path to becoming a musician, there can be a lot of information to absorb. Some of it can be contradictory, and this can be confusing.
As I've often said, I don't believe there is anything such thing as right and wrong in music. Which means there are many possible solutions to the problem of 'how are we going to express ourselves through music?'
This is all part of the fun.
That said, it can be difficult to move beyond thoughts such as 'am I doing this right?'
I think that at a certain point something just clicks and we can learn to trust our own judgement as to which is the right way to go on our musical journey, which is the best information, and which concepts are more relevant to us at the time.
It's been 34 years since I took up my first instrument, the violin. And 30 years since I started studying the guitar. It's only been very recently that I've learned to trust my own gut feeling as to where I want to take my music, and which concepts I want to assimilate into my playing.
The internet is flooded with information about learning music, and this can be overwhelming sometimes.
So I think that developing this skill is more important than ever.
All the best with your music,
Aleister James Campbell
