Dealing with Non-Stop Issues: The Latest DJI Fly App Update Woes

DJI just can't seem to stop releasing new Fly App Updates, and to what end? It seems like every Fly App update that's released there's new problems or issues to deal with and figure out...
Today, we want to focus on 2 things. First we wanted to install the Fly App Update 1.13.4 for Rose (our DJI Mini 2) and second, we want to try to figure out a solution to a problems that was pointed out last week on our Fly App update 1.13.4 video for Dwight (our DJI Mini 4 Pro). Actually, I didn't even notice this problem with Dwight until it was pointed out by a few viewers and now that they showed me, I can't unsee it!
When I got home from testing the Fly App Update 1.13.4 with the DJI Mini 2, I found out a new Fly App Update (1.13.5) had been released for the DJI RC2 controller which we use for the DJI Mini 4 Pro. So, I installed it to see if the aforementioned problem had been resolved. Guess what! NOPE! Seriously if I new we'd be continuing to have these major issues with the Fly App updates, I would have simply stuck with the 1.12.8 version that seemed to work perfectly. But hind sight, eh?
Anyway, we don't want to come across as complaining too much so we'll end our rant here. As always we want to thank everyone for watching and for your continued support. We hope you enjoy the video and God bless!

Click on the white arrow in the upper left corner of the compass to change it to north setting and this will change your jumping compass….your compass has 2 options. When the compass is set to read the compass direction of the controller it’s more sensitive thus it moves more

That's a great idea, buddy. I have the Mini 2 set the same way as the Mini 4 Pro and it doesn't jump around like that so I'm really confused as to what the real problem is. I like having the controller set to the center of the radar and someone mentioned changing the drone to the center of the radar to stop it from jumping around, also. I'll definitely be looking into this and seeing if it resolves it, man. Thanks so much for the advice! God bless and have a great week...

Thanks for those good tests, Keven. I made 2 flights with Hope yesterday at Old Donner Pass and Lake Tahoe, but I didn't notice any problems after updating to the 1.13.4 fly app version because I didn't have the compass turned on. I had some beautiful flights with no problems. I'll have to launch her again and see if I have that problem. Cute shirt, but you forgot to tell us about that cool kickstand on the RC2. I didn't know you & Kristi were full-time RVers now. Oh, I missheard that. You WERE full-time RVers. Still waiting for you to drive that thing out to Northern California so I can show you around our beautiful Sierras. Hi to Kristi OK, I checked it. My compass is jittery too.

lol I like how you don’t erase things when you realize you misheard stuff. I do the same thing. Hahaha. We have gotten a ton of suggestions for resolutions on that compass jitter thing so I’m hoping one of them work for us. We lived in the camper for about 6 years and I’m telling you it was my favorite way to live. Unfortunately kristi didn’t feel the same after so many years so last year we bought a home base. Once I retire in October though we’ll be traveling and camping more and I can’t wait!!! We’ll definitely need someone to show us around out that way. Oh, that kickstand is actually part of a bigger set up I bought on Amazon after receiving that e scooter. It’s part of a handlebar set up so I can fly the drone and ride the scooter at the same time. So far it’s working great as a kickstand though. I haven’t had a chance yet to test it out. lol it even still fits in the case, too!

Great, and not-so-great minds think alike. Hahaha Yeah, can't wait to meet you & Kristi and show you around. One of my favorite things to show off is the 70 mile loop drive around Lake Tahoe. In fact, I'm going back up there tomorrow to get more video over Cave Rock. I forgot to do an orbit and a 360° panosphere. It's only about a 90 minute drive from here in Nevada City, CA. Oh, ya mean I have to buy an E scooter to get the kickstand? 😧 (Just kidding) 😉 Maybe I'll just have to search Amazon to find just the kickstand. Take care, my friend and God bless!

Lol oh yes I definitely noticed. Of course I noticed after someone pointed it out to me. Hahaha. I’m not that observant obviously because I guess the compass has had the jitters for several updates now. I’m really hoping we can come up with a solution or DJI will offer a repair in the future updates. I think it is in the rc2 controller though and not the updates. Maybe a firmware update? The one rule I have learned to follow with DJI drones, when the drone has been sitting and is cold power up the entire system then shut the drone back down and restart it. This solves many problems and helps prevent flyaways. After the drone is warm this is not necessary.

As a 30 year computer technician working with automated systems mostly in automotive field I have learned when systems are cold some modules do not come online in proper time as they should which can cause a random malfunction. Just something to keep in mind and just trying to help

👍👍 Kevin - LOL you have definitely proved the old adage "If it ain't broke, don't fix it." I can't even remember the last time I updated firmware, or the app, for my (still nameless) M4P and RCN2. I guess that's why cobwebs pop up on my Fly App's _About_ screen. Haha!

lol this one was fun for sure but I have no idea what’s up with this compass. Some people are telling me it’s normal and others are getting into me about my calibration methods being wrong and I’m the problem. Hahaha. Well duh?!! Ain’t I always the problem? Thanks for bringing this to our attention, i recently and reluctantly downloaded the 1.13.5 flayapp version, after watching this video i took my drone off outside of my house to check if this problem is on my Mini 3, i am happy to report it is NOT, i am using the RC-N1 controller with an Android phone.

That's awesome, man! I'm glad it's working properly for you and you don't have to continuously stare at the jittering compass resulting in a migraine... lol I agree though and think it's related to the RC2 controller and not the update itself. We'll get it sorted out and put out a follow up video showing our solution once we find it... There's been several suggestions so I'm sure one of them will work... As Indiana Jones was told once, "You have chosen wisely." lol

This has nothing to do with the firmware update - you had the problem before, see ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-ega4QK8jqg8.html for example. The problem is that you have not understood the compass you are using here. Your compass display on the RC2 that you show here is centered on the controller, not the drone. Most other people center it on the drone as they prefer it that way. If you center it on the controller then it is not using the compass in the drone to align the display, its using the compass in the RC2. You calibrated the compass in the drone but not the one in the RC2. You also neglect that your RC2 is inside your truck, so its compass may be messed around by that. In the final test in your back yard for 13.5, you arent in the truck but you are under a huge metal structure. I suspect the compass in the RC2 is more susceptible to the issue than the one in your phone, which is why Rose doesnt show the problem. You could try calibrate the RC2 compass or standing away from things that might cause interference. Most other people have the display centered on the drone, which would resolve the issue, but maybe you really want it centered on the controller. If not then click the little icon top left of the compass display and center on the drone and you will be golden.

Holy crap!!! See, man? I had never noticed this until it was pointed out in the comments last week... That's hilarious. I'd say you have a great point here and this problem is totally related to the RC2 controller and not the update. I understand what you're saying about the compass being centered on the controller rather than the controller, but from what I remember, I've always had the controller set as the center and have not noticed it being so jittery. The Mini 2 with the RcN1 controller especially is smooth as can be and hardly moves at all... There's been a lot of different suggestions on possible solutions in the comments so I'm compiling a list and this is definitely going to on top. Regarding the truck possibly interfering, that's a good point but honestly I've never noticed the truck causing any problems in the past signal strenght.. We've tested that several times and the results typically are the exact same with both flights BUT, the compass could be a different story, eh? The test with the 1.13.5 in the back yard, I wasn't near the metal overhang with the controller but I can't say for sure it didn't interfere. Thanks so much for bringing that video to my attention and letting me know the problem was there way before this update. I'm sure we'll be doing a follow up on this once we get it resolved. The mini 4 pro on the other hand it may be possible. lol. I’ll have to think about this and see what we can come up with. Hi, just a note about calibrate ... I think the app says to rotate the drone counter clockwise and you were doing it clockwise--not sure if that is an issue especially when it says successful. The other thing I suggest is that we stand up and hold a drone well above ground while rotating during calibration. Gimbal calibration of course can be on ground and on flat surface. When was the last time an IMU calibration was performed? Thank you for your videos ... really nice to watch!

There’s definitely a chance the counterclockwise turn would be more effective. I never even noticed that on the instructions. We have gotten a ton of suggestions in the comments on how to rectify the compass jitters so hopefully we can sort it out. Hey, Steve! Well, I learned about these 2 modes and totally understand your solution. I just don’t understand why it’s so wiggly because the Mini 2 hardly moves at all when the controller is set to the middle of the compass. The mini 4 pro goes nuts!! lol. We are making a list of suggestions and this one is definitely going on the list of things to try. Hopefully we’ll be coming out with a follow up to this one soon and we can share our resolution. Several others are having the same problem and they're on different fly app versions, too. Someone actually sent me a link to one of our older videos and it showed our compass doing the same thing months ago... I really didn't notice the compass being so jittery until it was pointed out in the comments last week. Now I can't unsee it... lol

Calibrate both drone and controller far away from metal objects, like a truck. Flying from inside a vehicle, especially when running, can also cause issues.

Thanks for watching and for the suggestion. I wasn’t as close to the truck as it seemed on film but it still could have caused some interference I reckon. I’ve honesty though been flying from inside the truck for years and have never had any issues with either the signal or the compass as a result. Also, just to mention, towards the end of the video when I briefly demonstrated the 1.13.5 update, I was standing outside and not near any metal with the controller. I do think it’s an issue with the RC2 and not the update now though that I’ve seen other update videos and have received numerous suggestions. We’ll be doing a follow up once we figure it out and let everyone know what’s up for sure. Thanks again and God bless!

I have a feeling it’s got to do with the RC2 controller itself though and not the drone. Anyway, the truck could definitely be interfering with the compass and that’s great advice. The accelerometer in the controller is more sensitive when in one mode versus the other because it is using 360° input from the controller.. This results in a more detailed output..to test this set your controller on a flat level stationary surface like a table and switch between the two compass settings and you will see that they display the same stable output..Once you lift the controller and rotate it you will see a significant change in the output on the compass indicator..

Oh wow. That makes a lot of sense. A few people so far have told me it’s totally normal for the compass to be jittery like that but I just don’t remember ever seeing it do that before. Remember, Mr. Robert, the compass shows what the attitude and pitch of the drone is while moving through the wind, so that's why it constantly jitters. you just can't see it because the gimbal counters those movements to give you a smooth video feed. Perfectly normal. Cheers, Brendan

lol you may be 100% right about it being normal, man. We’ve definitely gotten a lot of suggestions on how to fix it and we wanna do a follow up testing out the suggestions everyone has sent in the future. One person forwarded me a link to one of our older videos on the 1.12.1 update and the compass was doing the same thing back then, also. I honestly never noticed the jitters until it was pointed out last week. I’m still confused why the 1.12.8 update didn’t seem to do it and we’ve not had the problem with the RCN1 controller for the Mini 2 drones. I guess they’re all just unique in their own ways. lol. When calibrating the compass, try to do it a bit further away from your pick-up (maybe the metal is interfering).

Note your RC-2 antenna often forgets to unfold and is blocked by your RC-2 protective cover~

lol Yea, I know... I just can't get that thing to unfold itself automatically anymore... haha I think I forget to open the antennas more often than I remember. It doesn't seem to make much of a difference though since we don't normally fly out too far and very seldom even lose a bar. That controller cover is pretty awesome but it does hide those antennas. I had this same problem. I solved it by clicking the little drone icon in the top left corner of the compass. You have it set on controller not drone.

Awesome point, buddy. did you have this problem with the RC2 controller since you got it or did it just appear one day? From what I remember I've always had the compass set with the controller in the middle because I like to be the center of the universe as Kristi says... hahaha I never noticed this before and I have no idea when exactly it started. My confusion is that the Mini 2 doesn't have the same jitters with the RCN1 controller with the same setting. I'm definitely gonna be trying this though and fingers crossed it resolves the jitters... We'll be doing a follow up video I"m sure... lol

@@WeretheRoberts It appeared after the last but one update. I thought it needed a compass calibration so tried that but it stayed the same. I accidentally clicked on the drone icon and it was fixed. Not had any problems since. Hope it works for you.

Hey. Thank you for sharing your experience after updating RC2 to the latest version. I had already updated my controller but hadn't done any flight testing yet. So I was a little worried after watching your video. I just did a flight test and on my Mini4Pro the compass reading is absolutely smooth. So I assume it's your device and not the update.

As already mentioned by others, you are calibrating a little close to the car, I think. Also it says to hold it up 1.5m above ground. You must be a giant to reach that in that position😅. Thanks for the video!

Hahahaha. Yea I’m 5’12”. lol. I wasn’t as close to the truck as it seemed in the video but it could still be interfering though I’m sure. If you haven’t noticed yet, I screw thongs up pretty often. lol thanks for the info, buddy. I don’t know if you had issues updating, but I had issues updating to this latest release. It failed twice with the third time it worked. I do hope you get it figured out. I’m not really sure why your M4P be doing that and you already calibrated the compass. And you would think others would be seeing the same thing. Maybe you caused it when you put electrical tape on your drone and covered up the sensors.🤣🤣🤣 you know it did hit the ground pretty hard when it bounced. :)

FFS! It clearly states, do not calibrate near any metal…and youre right next to a huge piece of metal!!!! Get out in middle of that parking lot and do it properly…stand up, hold the drone horizontally and slowly rotate your body, holding the drone at roughly arms length then repeat for the vertical orientation. You should also perform an IMU calibration too.

lol. Thanks for watching. Just to mention I wasn’t as close to the truck as it seemed on film. I’m pretty sure it’s got something to do with the rc2 controller and not my method of doing the calibration. There’s more than one way to skin a cat, right? I’m sure both our methods of doing the compass calibration are effective but unfortunately my rc2 has a problem. Maybe I should do an Rc calibration and see if that helps.

I have no issues with the compass (Solid) before and after the update. Rose may need to go see a doctor to have her compass looked at. Lol 😂 I always enjoy your videos and how you talk to your drones as a person. 🙏🏽

I always jump to conclusions apparently and don't realize I'm wrong until someone else points it out... lol We'll get it sorted out eventually though and I'm sure we'll post a follow up video. Best part about making these videos is someone always comes up with the solution so I don't have to... hahaha Oh, and these drones are people by the way. Hahaha. I was gonna mention more in a future video but I’ll go ahead and spill the beans. It’s part of a bigger set up I bought on Amazon but haven’t really used it yet. It’s really part of a handlebar mount that I got to attach to the e scooter so I can ride and fly the drone at the same time without having to hold the controller. I think it’s gonna be pretty awesome once I get a chance to use it but for now that part acts as a really cool kickstand. Lol

I have noticed that there was some erratic behavior of my compass whenever I flew from within my car! Maybe you should try taking off from outside and compare that to taking off while in your vehicle. I am thinking that it could be the materials from the vehicle. Perhaps not. I have not compared the two. Thanks for sharing.

Thanks so much for watching and for the comment. We really appreciate your support and your suggestions. I’ve flown from inside the truck since before I took off the training wheels. lol. Just kidding but I’ve never noticed any issues with the signal or compass due to being in the truck. That’s not to say it’s not a possibility though for sure. I did fly outside the truck toward the end of the video when I quickly demonstrated the 1.13.5 update in the backyard and the compass was doing the same thing. I think it’s something within the RC2 controller itself but some people were telling me it’s normal. I’m not quite sure I believe that because the other drones done too it. lol. The problem is the compass in the RC, not the drone. You can see that when it moves around, the drone icon also moves with it. That means it thinks the RC is turning left and right. If it was the compass in the drone, the drone icon would turn left and right but stay in the same place. Can you try going to the camera view without connecting to the drone, then go to the map and check if it still thinks you're turning?

Hello tried Mini 4 pro with version Fly app 1.13.5 using the RC2 controller worked fine. Also tried the Air 2S with Fly app version 1.13.4 on the RC controller and on the RC Pro controller with Fly App 1.13.5 these all worked fine. I suspect it's an issue with compatiblity with Mini 3 pro and the issues to do with NOT being able to update the RC controller Fly app from 1.13.1 is a hardware issue, possibly an older controller with older internal component. My friend has a Mini 3 pro had his swapped RC controller out by DJI and they will send you a refurbished one out and he can't get any updates, stuck on 1.13.1. 🤔🤔🤔

lol ok so the kickstand is actually part of a bigger set up I bought on Amazon for the e scooter. It’s part of a handlebar mount for the controller so I can ride the scooter and fly the drone together. It should be a lot of fun to use but in the meantime it’s working pretty good as a kickstand. Hahaha

Yesterday, I noticed that my controller was not showing the exact direction when facing my Air 3. Off about 10 degrees. I did a compass calibration and it didn't correct that. I also noticed that the compass was acting up. I lost VLOS of my drone in the sun and thought I was facing it directly as it came back and then noticed the decrepancy. Hopefully, a new update will come out.

Yea, these compasses can be really difficult sometimes... It was mentioned to me that it could be the RC2 controller itself that needs a compass calibration so I'm gonna try that and see if it helps. We got several comments with suggestions so I'm sure one of them will sort out the problem (fingers crossed)... We'll do a follow up video eventually if we can get a resolution... If you come up with a solution, keep us in the loop for sure!!!

lol Man, I wish! We're going to take a long 3 or 4 month trip once I retire in October. We lived in the camper for almost 6 years and I'm telling you that was the most fun life ever. We had a blast but my job kept us sort of in one spot the whole time. We'd go camping every few months to different places for a week at a time or so, but it wasn't anything like traveling for months on end. I'm sure we'll have some camping stuff come out next year and we'll even use the drones, too!! lol

I updated my RC2 at the beginning of the week. Don't know which version I had before, but I pretty much try to stay current. Yesterday, I tried to update. If I go in through the settings menu, it says that I am up to date with Version 1.13.0. If I follow the newer path through profile, it tells me that 1.13.5 is available. If I press Update, the notice disappears and nothing happens. * This just in * I finally got the Install button! It worked. Now, the N Mode is back. I hope I get a chance this week to go flying. (I live next to an airport, so travel is always required.)

I had to call in reinforcements to walk me through that whole process... haha I'm glad you figured it out, man and my bet is you won't have the same problem we have here with the compass on the Mini 4 Pro. 0.03 What's causing that "bubble wrap" reflection off the dash Kevin? I'm presently trying to remove double-sided tape that was holding the front edge of some perforated squishy rubber matting down over my dash. If I can still find one I'll replace it with a 3rd party dash carpet. Kevin I'd like to know more about that new Kickstand for your controller. Mine is an olde one for my Air 2 🙂

Hahaha. That bubble looking thing is some condensation on the windshield. I hit the wipers and it really messed up the window in front of the dash camera. I’ve been wanting to get one of those dash carpet things to protect the dash of the truck for a while now but I keep forgetting. I’m gonna jump over to Amazon once I’m done here and out one in the cart. lol. Thanks, Noel!!! Regarding the kickstand on the controller, it’s actually part of a more elaborate set up I bought and I’m gonna tell everyone about it in a later video. Ok for you I’ll let you in on the secret. Kevin, just FYI, I’ve been using 1.13.4 with my Mini 4 Pro (Mike) and my Mini 4K (Kay) with no issues so I’m really not sure what you’re experiencing. Have you checked your interference levels while flying? I won’t be upgrading to 1.13.5 until I see that all these issues have been resolved. Thanks for researching these issues. 😎

It’s funny you said you’re having no problems with the 1.13.4 because it seems I’m the only one with the compass issue. lol. I think we’ve determined for now the problem is in the RC2 controller itself and not related to the update. Someone sent me a link to one of our old videos where we demonstrated the 1.12.1 update and the compass was doing the same thing back then even. I have no idea if it does it all the time or if it’s gotten worse with time because I didn’t notice it at all until it was mentioned last week in the comments. Now I can’t unsee it!!! lol we are compiling a list of the suggestions people have provided and will be doing a follow up eventually. I have a feeling some of it is user error, too. Hahaha.

@@WeretheRobertsSo this may sound like a conspiracy theory, but have you thought of bringing an actual compass to the area where you fly and checking for magnetic anomalies? I know, weird. Huh?😂 Actually, the reason I’m suggesting this is that at the AMA field where I fly regularly, we have a well known anomaly at the north end of the runway that causes RC aircraft to lose signal to the radio and fail safe and crash on occasion. The air field is out in the middle of open farmland with no towers or anything around. I lost an RC plane to a dead stick crash there. Too weird.

lol are you talking about the GoPro 1080p? Yea, it gets grainy sometimes, doesn't it? It all has to do with our horrible internet and uploading 4k takes 2 days for a 10 minute video... lol We live out in the boonies and have to use an ATT hot spot for internet because there's no internet available out here (yet). They've been saying "yet" for years by the way. I'm not sure if the truck interferes with the compass or not, but when I tested the 1.13.5 at the end I was standing outside and wasn't even close to the vehicles. I was at least 50 feet away from the car port, too so who knows what's going on... There have been a lot of different suggestions so I'm sure one of them will resolve the issue. We'll see... hahaha Gen X drones.. That's hilarious! Kristi has given up hope, I think by the way... Oh, 3.5 months until retirement... Yep

I have some issue my 4 pro lost control between drone and controler in successive i was so nervous cause cant move any stick just tried turn off. And turn on remote but still lost control and i only press rth and the drone hardly return. Why this happen in succession i havent fly my drone again fear that lost

Wow that had to be kind of nerve wracking, eh? Yea I’ve had that happen before, too. Not often. Just once or twice. My bet is you had some sort of interference in the location you were flying in. Was there a jail or something near by? They often have jammers to prevent drone flights close to their properties. I’ve also had interference from power lines and transformers but it’s usually in certain areas. I wouldn’t lose faith in the drone just yet. Try going to a different location and giving it another try. If it happens again, I would suggest contacting DJI to see if they have a way to help you with a setting or maybe they would deem it defective and send you a new one under the warranty. Definitely keep us updated on your progress, man. I hope this helps and gives you more confidence to try again. Honestly these drones are really dependable but once in a while there’s a bad apple. Yikes. I’ve not been experiencing any transmission loss with the Mini 2 lately at all. In fact the signal seems really strong and the transmissions have been smooth. I have heard some guys saying their auto mode selection in the transmission tab has been acting up though so maybe while you’re flying go to the transmission tab and check to see which mode the drone has selected. If it’s too busy, try swapping to the other and see if it straightens up. Definitely keep us in the loop on your progress here and if that suggestion doesn’t help, may I suggest contacting GavinHR on his channel? He’s very knowledgeable about the tech side of these drones and is always willing to offer advice and support. Best of luck and thanks for reaching out. God bless! Kevin

UAV was a great app for us in the beginning and they seem pretty accurate as far as rain and satellites, but it seems like the Air Data app is more accurate for the wind conditions. I sort of use both when I'm heading out to fly but when I'm looking for the future forecasts I use the Air Data app..

Great question, buddy... We use the Air Data app and it seems pretty accurate. We used the UAV forecast app like you for a pretty long time, but once the free app became limited to 3 hours of info, we found another alternative. So far it's working really well and you can look really far in the future forecasts...

Are you running that box on your mini because of commercial use?

Hey there. Yea that RID box is just on the Mini 2 drones because I use them to make these videos so it’s considered commercial use. It sort of sucks that I had to buy them but they haven’t interfered with any of the flights so far. The extra weight may kill the battery quicker but I haven’t noticed if it has. I usually need a break from flying after 15 minutes or so anyway. lol.

@@DirtyPlumbuslol. We went a long time before monetizing and it was a lot of fun just posting fun videos. Fortunately it’s still a lot of fun to make videos because the moneys totally not worth it. Hahaha.

I downgrade the firmware to 12 cause the 13.4 the live video wasn't working for the mini 2

Oh that's a really good idea. Honestly the last several updates haven't done much for the Mini 4 and they've done nothing at all for the Mini 2 so they're probably not worth the hassle... Someone did send me a link for one of our older videos though when we installed the 1.12.1 update and the compass was doing the same thing it did here... Apparently we've had the problem longer than we thought. I'm not that observant I guess... hahaha

My mini 4 It has the same problem with the compass It is so shaky. It is so annoying.😠

lol I have no idea what's going on with it, but someone else mentioned I've had this problem for way longer than just this update. They sent me a link to another video we did a while back for the 1.12.1 update and the compass was doing the same thing. I think it's got to do with the RC2 controller itself and not the update... I'm gonna try the solutions they've provided in the comments and see if any of them will resolve the issue. I'll definitely let everyone know what the results are sometime in the future. Hopefully near future... lol
