My long overdue third hike of the 2021 season kept me local, to the Charles Deam Wilderness southeast of Bloomington, Indiana. The original plan for my annual spring hike was to head to the Appalachian Trail in late April, but on the very weekend I had planned to hike Mother Nature hit us with six inches of snow followed by two weeks of miserable, cold weather. So I delayed the hike to May and also decided to do something closer to home so the dogs would be able to join me (Jaden's backpacking days are getting close to an end).
My previous two Peninsula Trail hikes and videos also took place in the Deam Wilderness, but for this hike I decided to head to a different area of the Deam - the Sycamore Trail in the northeast section of the Wilderness. The plan was pretty 'loose' but I went in thinking about doing 3 days, 2 nights, and 20 miles or so of hiking. I thought I would probably do the 4.7 mile Sycamore Loop plus some other 'sightseeing' on day #1, and then the Axsom Branch Trail and perhaps another go at the Peninsula Trail on day #2. In the end I decided to skip another hike and video on the Peninsula Trail and cut the hike to two days (the weather was pretty miserable with temps in the 80's, swamp-like humidity, and intermittent rain).
Hiking in May in Indiana is a bit of a 'long green tunnel' experience, without the great views you would find in the mountains or even on the AT, so this hike and video was more to provide information to anyone thinking about hiking the areas I hiked in the Deam. But even without mountains and views, it was great to get out into the woods for a couple days with the dogs - I'm not sure how many more hikes I'm going to be able to do with Jaden, so that made this hike extra special.
For anyone thinking about doing this hike, I tried to include as much footage as possible of the various campsite options, water sources, and the trail conditions.
For those who have watched my other videos this one is done in the same style - a half hour in length, intended to bring the audience along for the 'ride', and with a still picture slide show with music at the end. If you just have a few minutes skip to the end and enjoy the pictures.

Arizona where I live now has some great hikes. My great and great great grandfathers were from Aurora Indiana. Someday I'll hike there.

Hey Jeremy. I didn't realize that was the pond you camped at. For some reason I thought you had been out on the Grubb Ridge Trail on the section I've never done (towards Hays trail). Now I need to go back and re-watch your video to 'compare notes'. As I was filtering the water watching all the 'swimmers' in my dirty bag, I realized a pre-filter would have been a much better plan - good call! I'm heading out on a canoe trip to the Boundary Waters in a couple days (half excited, half terrified! - I'm not much of a 'water guy) and then right after that I'll be seeing you in the Winds. Can't wait!

Nice to see that Jaden was able to make the trip. That 1st night of you camping was like most of mine.. The night critters and bugs are always looked forward to. Here in our Florida Swamps they are expected and you missed the main one , The Owls sounding off during the night. Solo camping the bugs are your friend. A general rule of thumb , as long as they are talking back and forth there is nothing else around. When they get quiet there is an intruder of some type.

Nice trip to the Deam! Sycamore trail cs #4 was my first overnighter. Last year we tried to find the cabin on Axom and did the exact thing you did. Wished we'd found it but like you, we plan on going back to look again. Thanks for sharing!
@davidgrayin
@davidgrayin 3 года назад
That campsite #4 was nice. I actually thought about packing up my stuff from CS #6 and heading back over there, but we had already done a bunch of miles and then the rain started. But I do plan to get back for a night at #4 sometime soon - really nice spot. As far as the cabin, that was kind of a bummer and a mistake on my part not to get the GPS coordinates (or location on map) before heading out. As soon as I got back I looked up the location and it turns out it was down the well-worn side trail I saw at the very bottom, right by the first crossing of the Axsom Branch. As I was heading back I stopped at that spot and thought about heading out on the side trail to check it out, but we had already hiked way more miles than I had planned for that side trip, the weather was getting really warm and humid, it had started raining, and I really didn't know that I would find the cabin down there. Just chalked it up to poor planning, and decided it gave me a reason to head back - we pressed on to the car.

@davidgrayin 3 года назад
No, didn't get the old one repaired - the Arc Blast is a new one, and their new design. I actually like the new design much better than my original Arc Blast, especially the hip belt. My old one constantly slid down on my hips and I had to constantly tighten the belt. The new one uses a two-strap design that holds the pack much better on my hips and never needs tightening.

Yes, fairly new (end of 2020). I had used an old (2009) Nemo Meta 2P as my 'dog tent' ever since I started backpacking, but the waterproofing on it started to fail badly in 2018. I attempted to re-waterproof it a couple times with some waterproofing spray but it really didn't help much. We had quite a bit of rain and snow for the first few hikes of 2020 and the moisture seemed to come straight through the tent fabric. I explored a few sil-nylon tents similar to the 'ol Nemo but finally decided to 'bite the bullet' and upgrade to the cuben fiber Zpacks Triplex - and I've had zero regrets about the decision. The Triplex is huge and has been completely bullet-proof to weather thus far - perfect shelter for me and the dogs.

I've been wanting to get to Idaho and the Sawtooth range for many years. I have talked to a couple people who have hiked there and they said the same thing - just spectacular. I'm still trying to figure out what to do for western trips later this year and I will certainly add Idaho to the list of potential destinations. Everything is so expensive this year (flights, rental cars, etc.) and pretty much packed for the summer already - post-Covid 'jail break' mentality, I think - I may have to wait another year or two, but I'll get there.

I'm not sure how many more trips Jaden (old lab) has in him, which is why I'm trying to squeeze in as many trips with him as I can. He walks with me three miles every day so it gives me a good chance to assess how he's doing - so far he knocks those daily hikes off without any issues. But Jaden lives to be out in the woods and on the trails - he has an amazing ability to somehow shed about half his years when he gets out into the woods (really 'ups his game'). But its already changed the trips that I would do with him - no high-altitude western trips, and only lower mileage/less difficult stuff. The next few trips I'll be doing in 2021 will be without dogs (canoe trip starting today, and a couple western trips after that), but I'm hoping to get at least one more hike in with the dogs in late summer or early fall. I'm just going to have to see how he does over the winter to see if he'll be able to join me on hikes in 2022.

Yes, we'll be doing the Wind River Range in early July - getting up to the Titcomb Basin this time. I also have a canoeing trip planned for later this week to the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness (Minnesota). It's not exactly a backpacking trip but it has been a 'bucket list' trip of mine for a very long time. I also plan to do at least one more western trip in September but not certain where yet - I sort of crapped out on permit requests again this year (I did get a Glacier permit, but it's terrible and not worth the expense to get there). I'm thinking of doing the Sierra in California again, or perhaps a Colorado trip.

Didn't seem a fun hike; saved me a trip, thanks. I applaud your love of those dogs, but don't you think that kind of heat and humidity is way too taxing for dogs of that weight-class, especially the older one? Of course they want to be there, but doesn't mean they should be...
@davidgrayin
@davidgrayin 3 года назад
Yeah, the heat and humidity is rough on them. We live in central Indiana - really hot and humid in the summer - and I walk them three miles every day when not on trips, so I understand quite well their limits. They will do fine as long as they have some water to cool off in, and I knew we would be walking along water much of our first day and the first part of day #2, so I wasn't too concerned about that part of the hike. But the 2nd phase of the hike on day #2 was going to be 5+ miles out-and-back on the Peninsula Trail, which is bone dry until you reach the lake. That, combined with the temperatures going up even more, was why I decided to end the hike early. I knew going in that the forecast was for warm weather, but there was also a really good chance of rain which I thought might keep the temperatures down a bit, and the doggies cooler.
