This guy was, I think, probably runners-up of Elvis Presley. He is one of the best singers ever ever ever and no one can argue that and if they do, don’t call me because I will let you know this guy’s great.
Overall, the greatest entertainer of them all, a great actor, an even better singer, a top drinker, a funny guy, and overall, according to those who knew him close up, the nicest person in the show business ... When I get born again, God, please make me come back as Dean Martin!
This takes me to a place I’ve never been. It touches me in a way that I can’t explain. Even though I was only 5 when you passed...you brought so much to my life. Thanks Dino 💛
It's stunning how Dean comes down the stairs in time to the music and walks cooly to the barber chair. Totally in command, Dean was still at the top of his voice here. What's equally stunning is Dean himself. The sparkle in the eyes, the humor are really diminished, almost gone. I love this version compared to the album version, this is much more soulful, and we can easily see why Dean had eased into country style music at this time.
Wow! Whether he had 13 kids or 7 or 107, I sure wish I could have had at least one of his kids! What a beautifully talented and handsome man my Dino was. . .
A barber's chair! Dean Martin's father was a barber! Strong symbolism for him -- especially in the context of this tune. When Dean made it big, he brought his parents to Beverly Hills to live with him on the Mountain Drive estate. He saw it that they were taken care of till they passed.
AlwaysOnWatch2 Although Deans parents did live nearby in a house he bought for them when his Dad retired, according to Deana’s biography it was actually Jeannie’s Mum Peggy who lived with the family in their home in Mountain Drive, Beverly Hills.
Today's garbage singers should watch the grand master Dean Martin at work and learn how to sing!!!! This is a truly wonderful performance!!!! Beautiful song indeed!!!! So, so badly missed is Dino!!!!
Gina my very words,,,he was truly gifted and he did it in such an easy way.....someone comes just once and his likeness is never seen again and that was Dean Martin, I cry when I hear him sing,, because he is not with us any more just in memories
Every time I listen to dean singing it reminds me of his wife Jeanie, who was with him to the end.. Maybe they will come together in another life cycle as true partner sharing their life together in harmony.
Very good song.I watched his variety show on TV every Thursday evening as a child and teen.My whole family watched it.And even though Dean was kinda rowdy, his variety show was clean, no dirty jokes or acts, and he never used disrespectful talk towards women in general. So any age could watch his show and not be offended. We also watched Dean's Celebrity Roasts whenever they were on tv.He was handsome and sang beyond "well".No one can ever replace him, his singing is one of a kind, and he always had a cool relaxed way while singing. He could sing any genre of song.He was also good in various kinds of movies, funny and drama.I always wondered if his wife ever requested he sing any songs at home.I would have.
What's yesterday If we can never say Remember when A life with no past A show with no cast Can you picture them One sad day When the chill just won't go away You have something to warm you In the warmest way Time will allow One moment of it now Then it's yesterday Girl you've got the will To make time stand still Don't throw this away Move your eyes In the way that it tickles me You're no longer afraid You believe in me
His voice could melt steel. This song is one of my faves. I remember this episode of his variety show. Me and my family always watched it, when I was a child and teen. It was a clean show, and was on every Thursday evening for 10 years. Glad it's on DVD now.
Gorgeous voice without much effort. BTW, his hair was dyed this color when his next wife, who was the receptionist in a hair salon, started messing with his hair each week. One week grey, the next blonde, the next dark. He was actually grey in the mid-sixties but dyed his hair black. He let the grey come through in Airport, which was his true salt n pepper look. Handsome in any color.
"What's Yesterday" What's yesterday if we can never say Remember when Life with no past mm a show with no cast Can you picture them Once a day when the chill just won't go away You have something to warn you in a woman's way Time will allow one moment of now Then it's yesterday Girl you've got to pause to make time stand still Don't throw this away Move your eyes in a way that it tickled me You're no longer afraid you believe in me Now take a deep breath smile you will regret Why just can't you wait Look there's the sun your life has just begun Only yesterday The coffee's in the cup the toast is popping up The smoke's in her hair La la...
This was 1972, and Dino's voice was a bit in decline, which showed in his album "What's Yesterday", his last album to chart. But the coolness is still, and remained for a long time to come. Still the King of Cool.
During this era, his song performance was much more serious than a couple years back... I wonder what happened? Why did he become more serious and not joking after the song with his ususal "oh... this kid can sing!"
Well he divorced Jeannie and married that 3rd wife and adopted her child in '72. Not sure if he even understood why that all happened. Deana tells a story about it in her book, "Memories Are Made of This". Later in life, I think he often saw Jeannie again. Fascinating book about a very complex wonderfully talented man.
Yea, I kinda knew it was a dye job.Either way black or "gold" or a "hair piece" ie Francis...Frank and Dino are still the BEST! Not only years of smoking but In 88 Dino was really hit hard by the loss of his son in 87.Did you get to see him perform?
Awesome thank you for posting this. I never saw him sing it till now. Do you by any chance have one of him singing Kiss the world goodbye? That is also on the same album but I have never found it online.
Dino had 7 children while with Jeannie, the four from his first marriage and then the 4 from his first marriage, and adopted an 8th child with his third wife. Dino never recorded this song on record, I have all four of the Bear Records Sets, and this song is not among them.
Dean also recorded a studio version of What's Yesterday. It's on the 1972 Reprise MS-2053 album entitled "DINO" It has a cover photo of Dean wearing a red baseball cap with DINO spelled out across the front of the cap. Collector's Choice Music has a CD release of the album. It's one of many Dean Martin "2 albums on 1 CD" releases they carry. The CD also includes the 1973 Reprise MS-2174 album entitled "You're the best thing that ever happened to me" I ordered one of all the Capitol and Reprise 2 LP's on 1 CD releases. Great addition to any Dean Martin collection. :)
