DeanRotumah.com - Dean Rotumah - Aboriginal Artist.
Aboriginal Artist Dean Rotumah belongs to a clan of people, from Fingal Heads NSW, known as the Booningbah people or "Echidna people",... which are a part of the Bundjalung nation (meaning the place of butterflies), whose area stretches from Grafton NSW in the south, to Beaudesert Qld in the west, to Coomera Qld in the north. His ancestors have lived on the Far North Coast of New South Wales, Australia, for over 40,000 years and Dean still resides within that district today...
In his childhood Dean grew up in a predominately Aboriginal community and still maintains a presence in that community today.
At the age of 14, he left school and started an apprenticeship as a house painter, which he completed by the age of 19.
In his younger years Dean grew up on the beaches of Fingal Heads where he learnt to ride surfboards and became extremely accomplished. The sport of surfing took over most of his life.
Dean has always been influenced by his Indigenous culture and the sea and many of his surfboards had contemporary artwork on them which further involved him in learning more about his cultural heritage through art and thereby honing his skills as a noted Aboriginal contemporary artist.
Starting in the early 80's Dean became very involved in passing on his cultural heritage by teaching back-packers and tourists the art of making, painting and playing the didgeridoo in his local area. He then moved on to working with exclusive back-packer tourism companies for many years teaching his culture until he moved further north to the Fraser Island district in Southern Queensland, where he stayed for 7 years again teaching his cultural heritage in not only didgeridoos but also in making Aboriginal art jewellery from coconut shell.
On returning to the Far North Coast, Dean started to do more and more freelance Indigenous paintings for the tourism and export market on his outdoor beach studio until 2006. After which he now resides on the beautiful southern Gold Coast region, doing what he enjoys the most...painting Aboriginal contemporary artworks for the tourism trade, commissioning and also the export market, and in his spare time...surfing.
