Dean is just as smart as Sam, if not smarter, he just doesn't advertise it. Dean hides his intelligence so Sammy doesn't feel he has to compete. Dean's every reaction is to protect Sam and always shield him from everything. He's a big brother and there's nothing that matters to him more than Sam. I love Dean, but I really hate his self hatred. He never sees just what a wonderful human being he truly is. As Cas said: Dean doesn't think he deserves to be saved, and it rips my heart out every time.
@@stopsunshine3402 but no one except Dean can play with someone's mind that good!how many times he has tricked Sam or Cas or Crowley or another angels, demons and...!
Dean downplays his intelligence (not consciously, perhaps), but when it actually comes down to it he is a Genius as well. Dean never went to college, nor did he really bother with high school, so he isn't generally as book smart as Sam, but what he lacks there, he more than makes up for in being Street smart. Sam is more theoretical, while Dean ,due to his insane amount of experience, has much better instincts and is more practical.
Instincts? You have to be joking. Christ. He is literally defined by the writers as IMPULSIVE for a reason. The amount of times he went in and killed supernatural beings he shouldn't have, the human life lost by his arrogance. Sorry no. You people are just weirdly obsessed with Dean.
@@Rebel_2891 You have to be blind or dumb or both if you miss out on Dean's instincts. There's also a reason why the writers nearly always wrote Dean as right. Each time it seemed like he killed some creature he shouldn't have, turns out doing so ended up being the right thing, you just have an obsessive bias against him so aren't able to acknowledge him as right. Also mind you - almost all the human lives that were lost happened due to SAM's arrogance. Not Dean's. SAM killing Lilith. SAM releasing Amara while trying to take off Dean's Mark Of Cain. SAM shooting Chuck, doing no damage, but instead angering him into unleashing the end of the world. Just because you are shallow enough to go "Sam is soft spoken so he must be right" in your mind doesn't mean that becomes factual. Jesus.
I think they are both smart, they just have different approaches. Sam has most of his knowledge from reading while Dean's knowledge mostly comes from experience. I honestly don't think that Dean plays dumb for Sam though. I think he is just interested in different things.
Beagologin Dean is book smart too, he just doesn't advertise it. I don't think he plays dumb I think he prefers to let Sam take the lead and follow him in the knowledge department, while Sam usually follows Dean lead on the more practical side but that doesn't mean Sam isn't just as good of a hunter, they just balance each other out perfectly without overshadowing each other.
I've always had an idea that Dean is dyslexic. People with dyslexia are extremely intelligent, see ideas in pictures or patterns but often struggle in school that is meant more for those who think inside the box.
cas flydgvr True, but research indicates that most people who have Dyslexia are also highly intelligent when it comes to figuring out patterns and the like. It may not be 100% linked, but the science doesn’t lie.
@@katie5998 still don't agree. Apart from Google lists saying "people with dyslexia are good at figuring out patterns" I haven't found any studies or percentage supporting the claim. Research indicates is quite vague. And they almost never say that they are able to do it BETTER than people without dyslexia. I could be wrong but I still don't believe higher intelligence is linked with dyslexia, because I haven't found any science or studies supporting it . I think that dyslexic people CAN be smart, not that they're smart because of dyslexia.
cas flydgvr I never said they were smart because of dyslexia. I said I read that people who have dyslexia are more likely to have a higher intelligence then people without. I don’t think it’s because of their dyslexia. However, upon further research, I find many conflicting articles and scientific research papers on the matter. Some claim as you do, that high intelligence and dyslexia aren’t linked. Others said differently, so I’m a little confused on the entire subject. I made sure that the website it was going to was legit, so I’m not sure why there’s so many conflicting reports. Upon you saying you couldn’t find anything about patterns I did some research because I wasn’t 100%. According to a limited amount of studies, there is some research indicating that people with dyslexia are better at visual-spatial problems than people without it. Though it’s an ongoing theory; and hasn’t been proved, it’s something many researchers are studying, in hopes of finding a connection. So, in this instance, you were right.
*I'm* dyslexic. Dean is a kindred spirit. His weird randomness fits perfectly as well as his ABCDEFGHIJ being ABYFDSJ and grabbing an answer for him three letters early. He's not a formal scholar but is intensely curious, retains what he's learned simply because he wanted to and applies his intellect to solve problems with his hands as well as his weapons -- remember the EMF detector Sam ridiculed as being made of garbage parts until he found out Dean's engineering made it better than the ones for sale? The weapons master and mechanic could become a fine engineer ( fanfic, *please!* ).
I have always believed that Dean Is just as smart If not slightly smarter than Sam. Think about it John was never around when Sam was little, Dean would have been the one helping Sam with school work. The reason Dean didn't do well in school was because he just wasn't interested. Also I never realized that they got the death certificate at the copy store.
I have watch the show Dean is a genius smart and he is competent have all 12 seasons Dean is not dumb and he is smart in his own way even though Sam is class as brains and dean is the muscle Dean is smart in his own way
I have always said that Dean is a smart man. He down plays his intelligence all the time. I love how he uses that to his advantage especially with the bad guys. I mean they underestimate him all the time. Just look whenever they think they’ve beaten him Wham! He gets them and there dead. Now I know it’s not always that smooth but what is huh. And people have a difficult time pulling one over on him.
Everyone knows that Dean's just as smart as Sammy. He just doesn't show it. Also you forgot to mention that "he can trap demons in devils traps as easily as eating pie."
Dean has an incredibly high I.Q. he just hasn't had as much formal, school-related education. But anything he needs to learn he does quick and effectively as fuuuuck.
2:15 is the perfect example of this shows amazing writing. It explains an important tool and how it works to the audience without feeling like they’re just dumping information on you.
Lol yes sure, Mr. Impulsive, shoot first ask questions later, Dean, who fails to critically assess or question the status quo of things. Yeah...I do not think so. Sam is clearly the critical thinker and the intelligent one, for intelligence is when one questions the information placed before him/her. If there is anyone on the show the questions everything and spends ages assessing it using knowledge and critical thought, it is Sam. Dean has other virtues though.
Deans intelligent his personality just makes himself not look the part. He just likes to have fun and fight while Sam takes logical less risk approaches.
I think it's that he acts more immature then Sam. It's honestly kind of how I am personality wise, I am smart, intelligent, am capable of being responsible, am street smart, and stuff but I have a kind of more carefree/childish personality.
I think Dean's carefree personality has a lot of to do with him growing up too fast. He's clearly traumatized, probably went through much stress in childhood due to losing mom, father not being around, raising Sammy and other responsibilities that a child shouldn't have to bare.
I always thought dean was smart you know how many times he fixed that impala he knows how to kill monsters by heart he made a EMF reader he can read people
BY THE WAY! - nobody ever said he WAS (an "idiot!) - it's just that he "shoots first & asks questions later" (- and - alright! - sometimes likes to ACT like a fool! :D) - but he's not! Sam is the opposite - he asks even TOO MANY questions, before doing anything. This "dicotomy" between two brothers with opposite but complementary charachters is one of the BEST "features" of this series.
The writers seem to be treating him like an idiot lately for comedic effect. He's been shown to be really smart but since Sam is known as "the smart one" Deans intelligence is pretty ignored.
Its also generally true that Dean is just a better/more develiped character emotionally. We see Dean grow & change as a person over the course of the show in a way that doesnt really happen to Sam. A lot of stuff happens to Sam, & he reacts to those things, but they never seem to affect him long term. In the beginning this wasnt as prevalent, Sam was a bit more developed as a person, he had anger over Jessica's death, a desire for revenge, the way he slowly becomes more & more like John as the seasons progress. But as time goes on it feels like Sam gets less & less attention when it comes to developing his character emotionally. Hell rolls right off him without any lasting effects, as does being soulless for a year. He's mostly just there to react to whatever emotional state Dean is going through at the time
Remember when these two were in custody in season 2 and there was this code that was printed over and over on the crime scene and dean cracked it without any paper or pen? Yeah
Even though this is only the first three seasons, it shows how intelligent he actually is, and how many messes has he gotten them out of? Especially now that supernatural is complete, we got to see how smart he actually is and people need to appreciate that he’s NOT AN IDIOT!!
I love it when dean tried to exorcise that demon lady one time after Dean trapped her and she then trapped Dean by destroying the building around her and she makes fun of him for not remembering the exorcism words and he's like dang it lol
When I first started the show, I wanted so badly for Sam to be my favorite lead, but Dean quickly stole the spotlight, and Jensen Ackles is a better actor.
It's really awesome to watch videos about the first seasons, particularly I fell like I almost forget about all those things. Omg, 12 years, this is history
So I don't understand how during later season's Dean's depicted as an almost single minded, gun-toting killing machine whose main interests pop culture, fast food and loose women. He's weapons trained and good tracker, fights like the devil and is street-smart. Strong and resilient, he comes back again and again no matter how many times he's knocked back. His one 'preoccupation' is to look out for and look after Sammy - beyond that the writers basically made him a caricature which is such a waste of the potential of this strong character.
I saw the title watched it and was like isnt this obvious tbh I think they are both equally smart even though Sam is the brains of the operations most of the time
A few pieces of advice, if I may. The transition between the clips should be the same for all clips; if you use more types, the spectator (especially people like me) get distracted from the actual content. Plus, they shouldn't be too complex. Also, the volume of the clips and the music used should be on more or less the same level. While I'm not against loud metal/rock music at all, I wasn't ready for the explosion at the end and it hurt my ears. I'm not complaining about the low voice quality in some of those clips, I know they might be hard to find... But maybe you should consider using scenes you actually can find in better quality.
Here's my hot take. Dean is just as smart as Sam possibly a little smarter but he doesn't realize it because john brainwashed him to be the perfect soldier, following orders and not thinking for himself. He spent all his time helping Sam with school and protecting him that he perceived Sam as having all the value, including intellectual. That's why he stops putting forth effort.
Kripke always had much more respect for Dean - he showed that Dean, as well as Sam was smart (because being a hunter requires more than just brawn), and when Kripke left, the writers started turning Dean into a joke. He rarely gets to show off how smart he actually is past season 5.
I didn't watch the video yet, but I just clicked it to comment that even though I'm a Sam girl Dean Winchester is not an idiot, sure he's not as smart as Sam, but he's still very intelligent, besides Sam wouldn't be where he was had it not been for Dean, his "more than just a brother, a father and a mother to him"
I like how in the description it says ALL seasons, even though only three season's had come out. Anyway, idk why yt recommended this now, but whoever made this should be proud. Also, I hope you're still an spn fan
Dean is more smart than Sammy but he is too good to advertise it cause he wants Sam to take all the credit and he is happy in Sammy's happiness After all he is the beat big brother 💗😘😘😘😘😘😘😘😘😘 to dean from me
This comment section has me in stitches. Dean is a genius? Dean is a critical thinker? Dean just hid his intelligence to protect Sam? Dean is smarter than Sam?😂😂😂😂 You have to be joking😂😂😂 The man is defined by his massive impulsive character, shoot first ask questions later, and because of his reckless nature, it cost the lives of supernatural beings that did not deserve to die, as well as human lives lost. I mean COME ON. Sam was always the critical thinker, the one with his own mind, the purveyor of truth. Sam was the brother that always questioned all the information that lay before him. Hence why Sam questioned his father, questioned the morality and ethics of hunting. Sam understood that morality is a grey area and because of that, he refused to judge one by who or what they were, but rather by their choices. As a result Sam was a far more just, complex and intelligent individual. Dean blindly killed supernatural beings that did not deserve to die, simply by default, as they were "monsters". Amy pond is a prime example. The ability to think outside the box and consider all options when weighing a decision, always lay on Sam. This is why Sam is the intelligent one - because he IS INQUISITIVE AND QUESTIONS EVERYTHING. That is a critical thinker. Not Dean. I love Dean however he has other virtues.
