Taken from a Stereogum article on the mollusk turning 20. Link: www.stereogum.... This video is already on youtube, but its unlisted and is a real gem so I thought Id make it easier for fans to find!
That would be sweet! Pretty different bands in a way. Primis has a very focused style and sound. Ween has a style and sound for sure but are more eclectic and emphasize idioms. Sidebar: saw both bands live a couple times. Gene is a way better singer than most people realize. Last time I saw ween, Gene's singing was basically pitch perfect and basically flawless overall. I couldn't understand it... it was maybe the best live vocal performance I've ever seen. Seen so many bands live and almost always the singers would either be weaker live or at least have some off songs or moments. Maynard from Tool for example, is a great singer but would always botch some parts and I noticed he was off-key for the first song or two. Seen them like 6 times. Seen other loved bands where the singer was much weaker live.
Stephen Hillenburg, the creator of Sponge Bob, sited "the Mollusk" as a major influence. "Ocean Man" is also used as the closing theme for the sponge bob movie.
I went to Claypool Cellars and Les’s wife let us pick a record from their collection to play during the wine tasting. I picked The Mollusk because I hadn’t heard it yet. It all makes sense now.
@@te9591 it was a variety show of sorts. just one night in pittsburgh. i think it was called worship the bomb. a year before 9/11 lol my old roomate was in instant death with ween's bass player.
Oh man, a real collaboration between these two guys would be the most awesome album ever. I love both of them, I love their bands, I love their music, I love their personalities, I love their wisdom, I love the stories they tell us, I love their style and their weirdness and the joy that they bring to so many of us. More Dean & Les plz!!! More more more!
When I was in high-school, Both of these guys changed everything I ever knew about music and I've been a big fan of their work for 15+ years now. Cool to see that they're friends.
Having recently listened to the mollusk I can say with confidence that it’s fucking incredible. I think one of its greatest feats is the fact that it’s able to maintain its ocean theme even when the songs have nothing to do with the ocean. It still feels like it’s on the same stage the mollusk (song) set at the beginning of the album. Incredible
Seeing Dean and Les play The Mollusk is really heartwarming. I don't often hear musicians playing their own music so casually. They both just act like fans of the music. Les though has some killer taste in music between Ween and Death Grips. Also gods above and below, The Mollusk is such an amazing album. It's nothing short of enchanting.
I've listened to other Ween albums and love many songs not on "The Mollusk" but that record is the one I threw on repeatedly for many, many years. So cool to see Deaner and Les connecting. Two giants coming down to our level for a bit.
We need a repress of this album and fast! Cd or vinyl, or preferably both. I tried to buy a used copy of it from Japan for 30€ (incl. shipping), but it never came. The post office probably screwed up once again. If it's gone for good then I hope it sank in to the bottom of the ocean and is now bringing joy to all the little mollusks and seacreatures down there.
I fish as much as possible. I was out fishing on our boat when the big news about the assassination attempt thing came out. My oldest daughter read the news out loud, I said "I came out here to escape that, please read quietly" LOL! Fishing is the best thing. It's not even all about catching the fish. There's so much more to it than that.
My grandpa always told me, "the day I can't wipe my own ass, is the day I don't come home from fishing" sadly it didn't work that way, but the sentiment was powerful.
Mollusk is great but I think Quebec surpasses it. The last true album from Ween and their musical pinnacle. La Cucaracha doesn't really feel like a true album, it just feels like a bunch of cut songs they had laying around.
I still like White Pepper. It's definitely probably their biggest stab at a polished mainstream sound but there's some really good tracks on there. Mollusk is great too. One of my favorite albums in general along with 12 Golden. They've got a pretty awesome catalogue in general. Better than a ton of more popular bands for sure.
I love that they met at Alternative Nation. I was at that festival and VERY high on acid. I have no idea if my memories are in any way close to what actually happened but I remember during Primus' set there were fires burning all around the hillside surrounding the stage and it seriously felt like I was in the lowest levels of hell, and was loving every second of it. Faith No More performed after Primus and I remember Patton throwing himself into backflips during the song Caffeine, when he sings "I'm warning you!" Was just mind blowing!
Ocean Man, need I say more ...oh yeah, The Mollusk is a psychedelic oceanic experience like tripping on a stonefish sting..🐟🐠🐳🦭🦈🦐🦞🦑🐙🦪🐡, did a pre show in Holland with the Ween guys ( Atak venue in the city of Enschede, Holland somewhere in the nineties), and these 2 guys got us flabbergasted with their stuff. Amazing legendary band!
After Les said The Mollusk is one of the best albums in the last 15-20 years, I was hoping Deaner would be like “well it’s been 25 years, but who’s counting anymore?”
Chocolate & Cheese is a great one too. I still jam Freedom of 76' pretty regularly. Soulful ridiculousness. lol. Gene definitely shows that he's got some serious pipes on that one. They're all over the place on that album. Good stuff.
I did that when they were on the White Pepper tour at a pub in Asheville, NC back in 2000. Everyone was drunk, high, or tripping, and when they got to The Blarney Stone everyone was shoulder to shoulder with beers in hand singing along. They closed the show with Hot For Teacher. One of the best shows I ever saw.
I used to listen to The Mollusk all the time when I'd paint and draw. It's such a creative piece of work, it opens up my own creativity. If you're an artist, put it in your playlist for a muse. Or just listen to it because it's awesome, mang!
i was at that Alternative Nation Festival, Melbourne Australia way back in '98, killer line-up, both these guys, FNM, Tool, The Tea Party Lou Reed and many more.
These guys would be cool to fish with. It would be hard for me to think of anything but "John the Fisherman" the whole time though. Such an amazing tune.
I was too old to watch Sponge Bob but I listened to Ween in high school. I would have been so stoked if I knew that they used Ocean Man as the end credit song..
