DeAndre Ayton Doesn't Make Sense...

There is no player in the NBA that confuses me quite like DeAndre Ayton. He’s not a bad player by any stretch of the imagination. In fact I would say he’s a really good player. He puts up good numbers. He does it on great efficiency. He impacts winning basketball. He has clear special tools and gifts on tape. But every single I watch him play I feel like he should be much better than he is. Ayton is comfortably a top 10 center in the league. I would argue he’s closer to 5 than 10. But when you look at his physical tools, skills, and gifts, you would expect someone with all of this to be a dominant player. But he isn't, and it's frustrating to watch on tape.

My name is Noah Terranova. On this channel I make videos breaking down the film of basketball players in both long term and single game contexts. I use a combination of advanced stats, basic stats, tracking stats, and what I take away from watching the games to form my evalutions. My goal is to give my own perspective on the game with my own little twist on how I choose to present it.

I saw someone say he doesn’t love the game, he loves the money. I do agree. I do understand that you gotta take your opportunities but, if your opportunity changes your life the way his has, you should feel obligated to go above and beyond for as a thank you. I wonder if they give him tape of greats to study, I’d urge him to watch KG, Amar’e and Kevin McHale, at the least

Here’s the situation. He has the tools but not being utilized right. He spend more time setting screens and staying on the low block to space the floor for iso ball. You want someone to improve off 7-10 shots a game? Yes he could be more aggressive on rebounding no doubt. We went him to take over a game when the offense isn’t to involve him in the second half? How many games does it look like he’s going for 30 only to get one play made for him? This system is too Book/CP reliant and it’s a reason we’ve lost over the years because Monty never made him or the twins try and create for themselves. In a big 3 or 4 someone has to sacrifice look no further to Bosh/love . He’s still young and with the right coach he’ll be all star and I might not be here just like bridges. KD don’t even look like himself in this offense. He’s a expensive bridges upgrade. Could try him at the 4 or could of gotten a true PF since we’ve been lacking that for years. Where’s the help for him? Everything is to help Book/CP. Craig/Josh isn’t the answer at 4. Imagine if they had given the twins opportunity to create instead of just waiting to shoot 3’s maybe the last two years would of been different.

After seeing DA in that Pelicans series, I know the man has it to be the best player on the floor which is what frustrates me. It’s simply his motor , we’ve seen this in other players before. To defend him some what, the man needs his job simplified and I think him playing at the 4 would unlock him more

In the Pelican series, Booker went down so he had an increased role. He just used wrong. Monty just has him setting screens and clearing the lane for Booker, KD and CP3.

He's still a young person. 24 years old. He might not be the aggressive player that everyone wants but that doesn't mean that he isn't trending in that direction. He's being compared to players that are older than him and haven't had the same upbringing as him. I'd argue that he's improved every year that he's been in the league. Mentality is his next hurdle and I believe he'll become more assertive/aggressive as he moves into his prime

As a Suns fan of 50 years, Ayton drives me nuts!! I nicknamed him "LAZY AYTON". He is lazy, and doesn't have the killer instinct, that is needed to compete at an extremely high level. He choses to layup the ball, when he should be slamming the hell out of it. And he misses or has his layups blocked, routinely. He doesn't block out, and he doesn't get offensive rebounds much. He should be blocking shots too, and he doesn't. I think he is very immature for his age, and when he finally grows up, the light might click on, and he could become dominant. This will probably happen, as soon as he leaves the Suns, cause that is our luck.

@mschallable
@mschallable Год назад
Speaking as a Suns fan, I am thinking that he was quite upset when he didn't get a five year contract offer the offseason before he was an RFA. The owner at the time was notorious for being a cheapskate, so I'm thinking that he planned to match an offer sheet instead of giving him the 5 years he could have the offseason before just so he could save that extra year of salary. Fortunately, that owner was run out of town, but I think that he may still be holding grudges against the GM and coach for being complicit in all of that. He is very frustrating to watch! He seems to forget that he is almost always the biggest and strongest player on the court and ends up getting turnovers for going into dribbles when he could have just made a second jump and dunked or had a good clean layup. He also has very bad hands. CP3, Booker, and Durant all spoonfeed him with perfect passes but he fumbles them way too often.

@@DanielMartinez-lj9vj who? How are you supposed to save CPs old ass when he gets beat off the dribble and get the rebound when none of your guards help you boxout? As much as CP helps on offense he's a liability sometimes on defense and boxing out when he gets beat. Book doesn't box out consistently either. If DA is helping contest shots when they get beat they gotta help him by at least boxing out their man. They can't help box out the big when DA has to help and they don't even box out their own guys, so fans expect DA to contest drives and try to get the rebound over 2-3 other guys🤦🏿‍♂️ its unrealistic.
@alberth1150
@alberth1150 Год назад
These fans want him to defend all 5 opponents while grabbing all the rebounds. Anyone scores or gets a rebound it’s his fault. The organization had lots of time to sign him but instead made him feel unwanted. Test the market and the rest is history. If it wasn’t for the KD trade Johnson was going down the same road. Players play to get paid, tomorrow isn’t promised. Bridges probably wishing he went for more while Brooklyn is now getting a steal

First off he's a PF. He's expressed it over and over again that his natural position is PF, he played PF in college and went #1 and they still labeled him as a C and they made him play C. That's why he wanted to go to Indy he can play 4 and Turner could play 5, but Turner can shoot and the paint won't be crowded. Monty plays him at 5 so when he sets picks for everybody the midrange shot and DA rolling to the rim is open and teams have to pick their poison. DA is an old school Tim Duncan type of 4 who wants you to feed him in the post and let him go to work and hit middys as well as run the floor for easy dunks. But the team just isn't designed like that. Myles Turner, Brook Lopez, AD, there are only a hand full of 5s in the league that can play with DA at the 4 and still keep the court spaced out. He's stuck playing out of position for the time being. So you want him to be a dominate 5 but he's more a Chris Bosh type 4. But I think he's a much more efficient scorer in the post and middy than Bosh was. He could put up more efficient Bosh numbers on a playoff team built for him to play the 4.

Is the coaching /Chris Paul /Devin Brooks. They don't play winning basketball as a team concept. I watch 3 other playoffs with the Clippers game. Casual fans have totally bought into analytics. Devin had 40-plus points. My question was those points scored within the flow of the games. Monty is stuck in that Mike Dan Antonio style of offense the eight-man roster rotation. Are the other members of the team being involved in the offensive scheme. You watch the other members on the team kind of just standing still because they know those two are not going to pass the ball very much to them they just going to have them standing around dribbling to get their shot off first as an individual that plays a game that is a group sport. They wouldn't even set screens to get Kevin Durant open. So how is Chris kagu floor especially when he doesn't even want to do any pick-and-rolls to get the ball into Ayden in the post. I'm listen to the comments Brooks made after the game. I suggest this would be something everybody should listen to because his words didn't match any of the action that was happening in that game 3.
