@@leonardparangiwicks6083 It gives you the beginning phase at the end of your postcombat mainphase. Which means you dont get to cast things at sorcery speed. So he cant cast agrevated assault.

@@Mox_Normandy and even if he had been able to cast it, he wouldn't have been able to use it since it can only be activated as a sorcery. Good to see I'm not the only one who caught the mistake.

Tbf most people get that thing wrong. I think its worded terribly. It should just be like a static ability saying you get an additional beginning phase after your 2nd main instead of the after this phase at the end there that often goes unseen. Though yeah this was a pretty big mess up espicially with the method they tried to combo it with assault

@@vipper57779 I don't think it's worded terribly at all. The way it's worded makes it a triggered ability that players are able to copy with the use of other cards, which is great. Besides, it specifically says, "At the beginning of your postcombat main phase...". AT THE BEGINNING, which means you've ALREADY started your second main. You can't just stop that half-way and take a different phase and expect to go back to that second main like pausing a show on Netflix to make yourself a sandwich.

Well it is pretty damn wordy. Definitely should be checking all the oracle text if there's a chance for infinite combo, but that card is not straightforward.

@@AgonalRhythm I mean getting a new beginning phase doesn’t include main phase. So he shouldn’t have been able to cast it on the first place. He even read it again and still gave himself a new full turn somehow.

I think 17 words is probably on par with a large percentage of magic cards.

It is worded in a way that leads to misunderstanding. It starts with "At the beginning of your postcombat main phase," which leads to you thinking you get the extra phases then. It isn't until the last three words, "after this phase," that you should realize your main phase happens first and the only thing after your second beginning phase is an end step.

​@@worcej11 I guess, feels like it's a general reading comprehension issue. I keep reading the card as well, and the 'after this phase' only just clicked for me. I think the card is worded poorly and it makes sense that this mistake would happen. Vs like the one time John won when he cast rise of the second sun from his graveyard and no-one questioned him or how the card works.

But everything changed when Justin attacked.

Makes me sad to see Jeremy's deck not built around Uvilda. BIG artifact mana rocks and X spells would've been super fun to see.

No it says at the beginning of you post combat main phase get an additional beginning phase. Look up the card because people are pulling the after main phase out of nowhere.

11/10/2020 After the additional beginning phase, the game proceeds to the ending phase (unless something has added even more phases; see below.) This is straight from the rulings on the card on Gatherer.

@@KelrictheMinion Yeah people trip up at the fact it says at the beginning in the ability. If it was me I would have just made it a static ability. "You have an additional beginning phase after your post-combat main phase." However the reason it is made the way it is, is so that removing the sphinx during the second main phase still allows for the additional beginning phase which it wouldn't as a static.

I think you're right, timing restrictions still apply to the exiled cards.

With Memory Lapse being added to Arena, we have a whole new wave of people remembering how brutal that effect is. It's one thing when a good spell gets stalled by a turn but when a bad spell gets put back on top or a spell that is very situational like the one Justin cast, it's brutal.

The points will be counted the same way they always are: they will ignore the mistake as far as the points/game is concerned. At most, Justin may make a comment along the lines of "welp, we messed up, congratulations for catching it, losers. We've only been doing this for 5 years, how could you expect us to actually read the cards?"

The sphinx says "at the beginning of your post-combat main phase, you get an additional beginning phase AFTER this phase." So your turn goes: beginning phase- main 1- combat- main 2 - beginning 2- end step.

I thought the same thing. Lets step through the steps with both the Sphinx in play. Note that Sphinx's ability gives an extra Beginning phase "after this phase", so it goes: Beginning, Main, Combat, Post-Combat-Main, Extra-Beginning, End Now say that Jeremy activates Assault on the Post-Combat-Main. Because Sphinx's ability triggers at the start of the phase and Assault can only be activated at sorcery speed, Sphinx resolves first, but Assault's extra phases will be placed "after this phase", so it'll slip in those Extra phases before the Extra-Beginning: Beginning, Main, Combat, Post-Combat-Main, Extra-Combat, Extra-Post-Combat-Main, Extra-Beginning 2, Extra-Beginning 1, End Sphinx does give another Extra-Beginning after the Extra-Post-Combat-Main, but it is again placed after any Main phases. Now, Assault could be activated during the first Main phases, which does net an Extra-Beginning followed by a Main phase, but then it's right back to the scenario as described above, so still not infinite. Beginning, Main (activate assault), Extra-Combat 1, Extra-Post-Combat-Main 1, Extra-Beginning 1, Combat, Post-Combat-Main (assault), Extra-Combat 2, Extra-Post-Combat-Main 2, Extra-Beginning 2, End

Sphinx of the Second Sun doesn't grant a main phase after the additional beginning phase, so he shouldn't have been able to cast Aggravated Assault

Yeah people misread Sphinx a lot like on a recent episode of MTG Muddsta, thinking they get the extra beginning phase right after combat, but it's after the post combat main phase. Might have been better if they'd said you get a beginning phase after this main phase just so people would understand.

Aggravated assault was fliped on the first post combat main phase. So after the draw Jeremy can cast it, activate it get an additional combat and main phase (triggering sphinx) restarting the loop

yes and no, It actually triggers at the start of the post combat main phase, but it gives u the additional beginning phase at the end of this phase (meaning you are correct of the sequencing but the actual trigger goes on the stack at beginning of the second main) so its really, 1st main, combat, (sphinx triggers) second main, additional beginning phase, end step. So Jeremy would not have been able to cast the Aggravated Assault

@@SimplyDaveYognaught Yeah. I saw the explanation of why the card doesn't work the way many people, myself included, intuitively thought it worked. It happens. My friends and I misplay cards unintentionally all the time. It doesn't mean that we didn't have fun playing the game!

@@charmandenator5686 that's not what I'm referring to. The second beginning phase comes after your post combat main phase so he didn't have the opportunity to cast any non-instants before the turn ends. The aggravated assault could not have been played and would have remained in exile.

@@iansweeneysmith3500 The interaction between Aggravated Assault and Sphinx works though he shouldn't have immediately done it so you are correct there.

Jeremy still gets his post combat main phase after Sphinx giving him an extra beginning phase because the extra beginning phase happens at the BEGINNING of your post combat main phase and the exiled cards from Nassari can be cast until end of turn.
