'Dear Alice' Decommodified Edition | Solarpunk anime ambience with no ads

The solarpunk-inspired 'Dear Alice' commercial produced by the animation company The Line for Chobani is one of the most beautiful depictions of an ecological future I had seen, except for one glaring thing: it was an advertisement for a dairy company, and my solarpunk vision doesn't have either of those things. Neither is compatible with the 'degrowth' economic model outlined by people like Jason Hickel, not with the ethic of an ecological society described by social ecologists like Murray Bookchin.
In light of that fatal flaw I decided to paint out all of the branding and recreated the sound design so that solarpunks like myself can enjoy this beautiful world without having to invite the ugliness of capitalism into it. Enjoy!

@@Dodogembul eco-socialism on Tumblr worded it well: From "donations" to "commons". It's a subtle change, but it makes a huge difference in the world-building of the video. The former implies that this big orchard belongs to an owner and that they're donating the fruits to "the less fortunate" (and, by extension, that poverty is still a thing); the latter implies that the orchard belongs to everyone and that the fruits are free to take in the spirit of solidarity. Waffle To The Left brought out the potential in this gorgeous video and made it an actual solarpunk utopia - without brands and without corporate pandering, complete with true common ownership over land and resources.

@Perditions
@Perditions 5 месяцев назад
It really is absurdly far away. It's imagining a future in which, with so much automation, they still require a person to push go, on every task. The mind boggles at the implications. It's like farm work depicted here was designed for the illusion of human labor, like how Betty Crocker intentionally omits eggs from their mixes for the illusion of a human contribution to cooking at home. What the rest of society would look like, I don't have sufficient imagination for. When people make art like this, they don't have to worry about what's incentivising everyone's labor. This looks like a society in which human labor is artificially required for the sake the person.

@Perditions
@Perditions 5 месяцев назад
@@eduardopupucon I appreciate the cynicism. It's not even cynical, it's just realistic. I mean, on one hand, the video was anime. It was meant to be idyllic and picturesque. ..Everything polished and pruned. But then people start romanticizing about it, and they're genuinely ideological about it. Realism, is what the world needs. Healthy realism prevents attempts at pursuing these idealistic futures from becoming another dystopia. Don't forget, every attempt at socialism had idealistic visions of the future. If only they didn't eliminate anyone who criticized or disagreed... The rational criticisms were what they would have needed to work out the kinks. They would have been criticisms that fell short of socialism, but, it could have worked better.

as someone drenched in the Cyberpunk world for the last 7 or 8 years (Cyber/Dark Future-style tabletop games, and of course Cyberpunk 2077/PL DLC) I have only just now heard the term, "Solarpunk." Watching this Neo-Miyazaki-esque take almost brought tears to my eyes, dude, I am ENAMORED by this concept. A future where we win. It hurts that I can't see it.

@@JeremyGleneskThis exactly! Other -punks aren't meant to be all sustainable sunshine and roses like Solarpunk is. Solarpunk is a wishful tale: let's make it this instead.

Fun fact. None of this would be possible without oil. Electric wires need to be insulated, turbines need to be lubricated, and all that tech requires many many other synthetic materials that can only be made from petro products. And that's not to mention all the open-pit mines and refineries needed to produce all the metals in those machines.

Yeah, it lines up with this being an advertisement paid for by a corporation. Nuance isn't so valued there. It looks pretty, and it feels green, but I'm sure things would pan out far differently from a bunch of hovering robots with tube arms if anything solarpunk came about in the real world. Instead of all this high tech stuff, I think we could take a lot of inspiration from indigenous food systems. Of course, our populations are much, much larger than those which developed any indigenous food systems, so I wouldn't expect exact parallels, but our agricultural practices could be much more sustainable, environmentally friendly, and efficient than the overproducing monocultures we have now- it's a matter of implementation rather than invention. That isn't to say technology, oil, or electronics aren't good or useful. I'm opposed to car-centric infrastructure, private jets, and bananas coming in thick plastic containers, but I wouldn't want healthcare providers to stop using plastics that ensure sanitary conditions just to be an inkling more 'sustainable'. A lot of environmentalists are hardliners against the use of any oil, and I see where they're coming from, but I think the real goal is to use oil and metal sustainably- recycling what we can, opting for alternatives where reasonable, and disincentivizing pollutive practices that are done for profit, not out of necessity. You're completely right that, from where we are now, we do depend on oil. I hope we can agree, though, that it's worthwhile to diminish this dependency in favor of more environmentally friendly practices, and that this may lead to carbon neutrality- or even negativity- down the line.
@JeremyGlenesk
@JeremyGlenesk 6 месяцев назад
Okay, but so what? Harvesting a very minute amount of oil and using it for highly specific products is not the problem. Mass harvesting and consumption is the issue. No one is arguing that oil should never be used, ever. They are arguing that maybe, possibly, we shouldn't be so fucking dependant on it for our energy needs, and perhaps we should look to alternatives to provide our energy consumption needs without damaging the climate.
