It is a bit of a page turner. But one of the main characters suffers from the trope of having a super high IQ but makes ENDLESS stupid mistakes and also there are too many twists to take the ending seriously. Just very stupid. I will again recommend Camilla Lackberg for detective novels. I'm listening to the Fjallbacka series. There is some misogyny from a secondary character but it's clear no one takes him seriously and the main characters are good and likeable. The characters also learn and grow (and it's clear it's the author's intent to show this). There is some heavy material in the crimes but the character arcs and interactions are lighter and provide balance. They aren't the shortest or fastest moving books but they are kind of a comfort listen to me where a bit of length can be nice. Also Ann Cleeves and the Vera Stanhope books. Vera sometimes gets underestimated as a female detective (that isn't conventionally attractive either) but she uses that to delightful advantage. There's also the Falkland series which I liked at first but a later book made me very angry.

Elizabeth George is fantastic! It's a long series at this point, and the books are character driven but with intricate plots as well. They are so well done and you will come to love the characters so much. Far From the Madding Crowd is my first Hardy and still one of my favorites -- Hardy is my favorite classic author, so I'm a bit biased. 💚 I really enjoyed Gone Girl -- approach it with neutral expectations, if you can. 💚

I really like Elizabeth George. You've got the first book in her Thomas Lynley/Barbara Havers series. They're classic British detective novels and the character arcs over the series are well done. If you enjoy the first one, you've got a whole lot more you can look forward to when you're in the mood for a cozy read. They're not cutesy, some of the things that happen over the course of the series are quite dark, but for me, a British detective/police procedural novel is always a comfortable place to go when I'm not feeling inspired by anything else.

Next I have Her Spell that Binds Me by Luna Oblonski (hoping for 5☆) Taken by the Witch Queen by Luna Fury is my other 5☆ but it's smut, the writing and story are very good tho!

The temps have been cool down here in Ohio too but they’re on the way back up. The trees think it’s Fall. They’re starting to change colors and drop their leaves. I’m ready to call it Fall. I’ve already pulled out my horror and Victorian novels for September and October. I read Gone Girl last year. It was good! Somehow I had escaped spoilers which is surprising considering how popular the book and movie were. Far from the Madding Crowd is the Thomas Hardy I chose for Victober. I have heard it’s good from people who like Victorian literature. I read The Return of the Native in high school and remember it being terrible but that’s how I felt about everything we were required to read.

fwiw I'm in middle of a sort of nonfiction book arc called "The book of forgotten witches" which is a really unique look at myths and folklore, usually coming back to female figures with witch or witch adjacent labels, and history of those accused of it while also mixing in origins and how things like tarot are connected. What makes it interesting is that it's written from the perspective of this ancient narrator and is a combination of more encyclopedic type facts/over view and ends each section with a short story to bring one of the figures to the center.

I don't know if you've read it yet, but if you want a crime novel that's a little different I'd recommended The Colors of Death by Patricia Marques. It's a very grounded scifi novel about a world where certain people have very minor telepathic/telekinetic abilities and have to deal with societies reaction to that. The main character is a telepath and how the author weaves that ability into police work and the issues she faces is very interesting.

The Perfect Marriage isn’t essentially a bad book, what I felt as an avid thriller and mystery-thriller reader is that if you have read a couple of those, you’ll see what’s coming from miles away. It was really predictable.

Hahah well I at least thought that “The Housemaid” was somewhat entertaining especially in the beginning. But my god “Never Lie” was sooo much worse, it’s in fact so bad that I kind of want you to read it just so I can see your reaction hahah 😂

The problem with Gone Girl is that after it was published, a lot of authors kind of stole the same (or similar) concept. So, it might not be as mind-blowing now as it was when it originally came out. It’s still good, though!
