This is a short film documenting how I maintain one of my working cameras. This heavily used Deardorff 8x10 is one of the first cameras I purchased and has stayed with me for many years. It is one of the cameras I use for process testing and has long been in need of new bellows and ground glass. This shows my process for swapping out the ground glass and installing new bellows.
Original music throughout is also my own.

Corrections to the film:
Former Deardorff employee and renown expert Ken Hough has let me know that the bellows I removed were in fact the original bellows installed at the factory; evident by the specific type of staples used. Also, he has clarified that the front of the bellows was indeed glued to the front bellows frame from the factory.

I like using beeswax on old screws for lubrication and ease of installation. I know I will need to re-bellow my Deardorff 5x7 some day and this helps me get ready . Thanks.

I'll keep that in mind and will pick up some beeswax to have in my shop. Thank you!

Nice job! The metal on your camera is in fine shape. I rebuilt a similar Deardorff and had the metal replated, which can be a very expensive undertaking. Lovely bellows. Thanks

Yea, the metal on this one is in great shape. The rear standard and base are about the only wood on the camera not modified though. I have all the parts for a total overhaul but time for a project like that is scarce so will have to wait. Thanks for your comment.

Very nice tutorial. I used the same outfit to supply bellows for a refit of a Seneca New Improved 5x7 View Camera, and am very happy with the results. Instead of staples, I found about a million tiny upholstery tacks; used stapes, same as you. I kept the tacks for some reason; they're in the traditional baby food jar in my shop...

Yea, the staples worked fine and with proper care I shouldn't have to think about it again for a few decades if at all. I am planning on a total overall of the camera to repair some modifications made by a previous owner. I'll likely film that and make another video if I do.

Nice! Who made the new bellows?

I've been using a small Hong Kong based company that makes bellows and other LF accessories and parts. I don't think they have a website but you can find bellows and other listings by them on ebay under the name ecbuyonline2008
