*"DEATH"* It comes off as a simple term, but I can't help but notice the picture that comes with it: A monstrous mass of eldritch horrors, something you would never want to face. It is by that logic the embodiment of death. You don't want to face death, and so this creature follows that very idea. Was it intentional? Maybe. Another thought I had of this is perhaps it might also embody "life after death". I know what you're thinking: That's relative to a person. People view life after death in many ways. From Heaven and Hell to an existence of nothingness to walking the transcendent planes. Maybe that's how this creature works. It's appearance looks different to everyone and doesn't often have a consistent form. It tailors to every person as their own "life after death". In this case, it is beyond an objective answer, something no one has a defined answer for, and so this monster dawns that sort of concept. It is beyond an objective answer to what exactly it is. You might be able to pick out details, but that's the same way your mind picks out possible answers to what happens in the end.
I agree with you, that is the idea I was going for when creating this creature, can be both, what one imagines after death, or the idea of one not wanting to face it
