The funniest thing about this episode was seeing both sides actually arguing that their character would lose before the episode came out. It was also neat seeing most of the Fire Emblem fandom being exposed to VS battle scaling for the first time.
As a FE fan I will say, in fairness, a lot of fans are REALLY attached to FE being a "grounded, kind of realistic" type of games, and earlier on they largely were. 3H is just one of the 3 worlds in the series that have really high VS scaling.
@@nahte123456 I mean, a lot of the earlier games have higher scaling as well if you really look for it. Stuff like Duma and Mila creating a continent, or Tiki being stated to be able to lifewipe the planet if berserk.
@@victikirby15 those aren't really scaling though. Tiki never says how she'd do that, maybe she'd just poison everything with her magic, that's not a scalable feat. As for Duma and Mila, even if we assume they meant literally, that would be with magic they clearly can't use at will or Duma would have in his mad state. Tellius, Fates, and 3H have solid, calculatable feats. Everything else is just vague, not explained magic or only told as stories inuniverse.
Honestly I've seen enough of both the power scaling community and the FE fanbase and even seen them cross paths (there's more overlap than you'd think), that I can say with certainty that I think they're a bad mix, so I can't really share your excitement
In the end, Guts was being fully controlled by his inner beast of darkness, but was able to fight back against it just as he was about to deal the killing blow to Dimitri. Guts took control over his demon and ended the fight on his own terms, putting a stop to his killing impule and overcoming his own demons, something that he strives to achieve throughout the entire story of his own manga even to this day. This ending shows a genius understanding of his character and Berserk as a series. I was scared of seeing one of my favorite characters lose this episode but the way they did it was nothing short of brilliant!
I love how Guts has a destain for Dimitri’s face in this episode. He hits him once in the face with the blunt edge of Dragonslayer Hits him in the face a second time when he headbutts him And then he full on socks him in the face when he’s in the berserker armor.
The battle might be my new favorite fight in the series! Really like how Dmitri actually respected him at the end. Feels like the most respect a winner has shown to the loser in the series. I’ve also listened to “God’s hand” too many time at this point
I really, *really* wanted Guts to win. The minute I saw they glossed over Dimitri's nuke feat I immediately thought "Oh. Well my hope was fun while it lasted."
Dude, my top 2 most wanted series (ToAru and Fire Emblem) getting on the show and getting amazing episodes makes me so happy I need Lousy to write more of my most wanted One of my favorite details is how in Three Houses, Areadbhar has a durability limit of 20 hits to be used before it needs to get fixed up. In the animation, you can see Dimitri land EXACTLY 20 HITS on Guts with Areadbhar on screen. The amount of love that went into this episode is insane
I was wondering if they'd actually be that meticulous myself actually. I tried keeping track but I kept losing track if something counted as a hit. I'll trust you on this and be very happy they kept to that,
Honestly this has become my favorite episode in the season and probably one of my favorites of all time!!! Every single aspect of the episode was top notch and the climax and ending to the fight somehow *still* managed to stand out as amazing. As someone who loves Berserk and wants to finally get around to beating Three Houses I adore this episode and I only expect it to get better over time LOL.
This matchup was my number 1 most wanted for over two years, and I love both of these guys. So there was a lot this episode had to live up to for me personally, but I went in being as fair as I could. And they blew every expectation I could have had out of the water. This is not only my favorite episode of this season so far, it’s up there as one of my favorite episodes in the whole show. And I couldn’t be happier that it’s a true statement. Cheers to Nem too.
First of all great review and reactions as always. Can't wait to get to Bill vs Discord for a surprise I've been able to put into that fight. Guess it's better to say it than not to say it. No the track art wasn't traced but it was something I was staring at for hours to make sure I got it right, after a ton of negative comment on it I've come to realize that it was a bad Idea and should have just done something more simple. I understand anyone who doesn't like it since it does do a lot things wrong along with looking rather messy. I'm doing more simple art now and taking more suggestions from the directors than my own ideas. Sometimes they are good like the Sun Wukong vs Hercules art, but then this one is a an example of ambition doesn't equal quality. I'm always up for criticism and it's good to know what I did wrong.
Oh yeah totally, I can respect the ambition even if I wasn’t a fan of how the tower thing looked. Don’t let that discourage you from doing ambitious stuff in the future, sometimes it’ll work and sometimes it won’t, that’s the case with anyone doing anything creative. For what it’s worth, that tower is the only thing I didn’t like the look of, the cloak, helmet and swords looked great. Probably should’ve said that vocally in the video but I appreciate you being a good sport about it
I love how this ep topped vader vs obito for me in like every way after i said id probably wouldn't end up loving it as much. You love to see it. Yeah the cast blew it out of the water. Especially that ending and the kill all of them scene. So good. And that goddamn gorgeous track.
I am so glad Fire Emblem had such an amazing debut for its first episode, Guts vs Dimitri is easily my favorite of the season so far, and I’m not sure what could top it. Also, shout out to the split second where Shez is named “Lucivyle” shown in Dimitri’s analysis, that’s amazing.
I think the discussion from this episode led me to buy a couple of Fire Emblem games recently, which are Three Houses, Three Hopes and Engage, been having fun with the first so far. A lot of this episode is super great stuff. And also made me happy that Nem's other content gets a shout out. Gotta provide love and support where we can.
I was so worried ever since this episode was announced since Dimitri is my all-time favorite character. I've never been so happily surprised by an episode, my lord. It's the first time a fake-out really got me too, aggggggghhhhh it's so good
The funniest part about the reception to the episode is the FE community being surprised Dimitri won and way overestimating Guts (which the community always does ngl). Oh yeah, and the reaction to people finding out what weird ass power scaling looks like for the first time is also funny. Yes, characters that are mountain or island level can still take damage from random grunts, have you played a video game before. (Town level is considered a low tier within 3H for the playable characters from what I’ve seen, which officially means Bernadetta > Guts babyyyyyy) Despite Guts being a cool badass there’s a reason why he loses basically all of his well known matchups
yeah guts would destroy bernadetta lmao, haha vengeance meme haha gameplay mechanic. Also rhea's strongest attack can't even destory a house, so how are they town level? That is like their maximum, not minimun. Honestly you overestomate three houses too much
@@eugentraista9222buddy, if you took fe at its weakest, then sure, they're not the best. But death battle uses them at their best, so yeah, dimitri slaps guts and Bernie would do fine too
also you do realzie story wise dimitri has weaker feats than guts. so yeah rip. You really wank 3 houses characters too much when story wise their feats are weak
4:07 Yeah this really falls in line with the: whoever has less stuff calculated is usually gonna win, logic seem kinda a given in this episode when they didn’t give shit for Dimitri till the end and calced (from what I’ve seen at least) the most impressive thing Guts should logically scale to
Never thought Wolverine vs Raiden would be dethroned as my favorite episode in the entire show, but if there was any episode that would surpass that it's this one, partly because I couldn't stop gushing at them talking about a game I love. I could tell that the writers and animators loved the source material, and with the way Chad voice acted Boomstick this episode I could tell he was really happy to cover Berserk and Guts' character again.
It is insane that the ONLY people mad about this episode... are fire emblem fans that, because were never even introduced to the concept of powerscaling, are calling the scaling of the javelins dumb and that DB research is horrible, I don't think I've seen a fanbase of a franchise DB used being this mad that their character won since Dio vs Alucard And outside if FE fans, everyone else loved the episode! Even Berserk fans which were chill since the start
@@FranTheNerd death battle uses numbers and no logic, and they were biased cuz guts won against nightmare, not to mention gameplay feats shouldn't count, guts also has an ability is a warriors game that makes him invincible, so by that logic lorenz on three hopes is the strongest cuz he can't take damage while attacking, which is just a random gameplay ability that contradicts the canon feats. And edelgard killing rhea with a relic weapon is equal to a thug defeating superman with kryptonite. Doesn't mean she hit her with the power of a javelin of light
As an FE fan, I adored this epsidoe for itself but also for the absolutely hilarious crapshow that was the FE fandom leading up to and post the battle, with everyone yelling about how dimitri should have lost. Freaking hilarious, I imagine this is what Alucard vs Dio was like for Jojos. Personally I don't care, I just wanted the fight to be amazing and it was an absolute banger. Music was phenomenal as usual, with the added bit of a special emotional connection considering how much I adore the FE series and my love (and admittedly a bit of hate lol) for 3 houses. Not sure if it outright tops Fireborn but it is DAMN close. The fight itself was absolutely gorgeous all around and the lines, acting and just general character writing was perfect. Admittedly the voice acting for Dimitri was slightly jarring, but that isn't a fault o nthe Voice Actor: I'm just so used to Chris Hackney that anyone else, if they didn't do a perfect rmimicry, is odd. But it was still a very good performance objectively and for that I'm grateful. Of course, the emotional heigths of the episode are what truly sold it for me. There was no real 'he's just like me' moment like Zuko/Todoroki had which I'm grateful for, but the ending absolutely captured that feel, and got to show off Dimitri's inherent nobility that most of the fight missed since he was moreso in his 'boar prince' mode. Additionally, it gave Guts a huge amount of respect, letting him fight till his literal last drop of blood, and letting him finish standing on his feet. (also, fun fact, in 3 houses broken weapons can still be used. They're vastly weakned, but still usable. Which means that yes, Dimitri could have used the broken Aredbhar head to defend himself there even according to the FE rules.) The dual 'breakdown' moment is another stand-out emotional moment, even if it isn't as much . Absolutely stunning and incredible, shivers down my spine. It's one of my friends' favorite moment. It's also really special to me because, like you've mentioned for several of your favorite episodes, I got to watch it with friends from the fire emblem discord server I'm on. And we were losing our minds, loving everything that occured, losing our crap when Dimitri looked like he won, only to once again freak out when it looked like Guts was about to prove that to be a bait-and-switch only to even further lose it when it was revealed that nope, THAT was the bait-and-switch. This watch-along gave me so many fond memories so that made it even better. Also, side note, Jocelyn having the single most based take of her entire carer. Wolves for life.
You referencing Super Hero Squad makes me so happy. Also absolutely agreed, this episode made me so happy on how it portrayed and respected both characters. And..I kinda wanna play Three Houses now
Honestly, this is episode got me back watching Death Battle again. I love Dimitri and Fire Emblem. The fight between him and Guts was perfect. And the song still stuck in my head. My one nick pick that they didn’t mention that Dimitri is capable of fighting the robots/dolls in his route, plus crushing skulls with his bear hands.
4:41 Yes, this is what Death Battle does (almost) every single time. They unleash phenomenal editing skills fallows by breath taking backgrounds and high quality visuals with excellent writting
Just in case if no one has heard the news yet, Chad (Boomstick) confirmed Bill vs Discord to debut on September 10th, the fight after Silver Surfer vs Martian Manhunter
Speaking as someone who likes Guts but doesn't really care about Fire Emblem, this is my third favorite of the season and it is CLOSE for second place. I'm VERY happy to all of the Fire Emblem fans, both those who are and aren't my friends, for their introductory episode being this good. Hopefully we can get another highly requested series sometime soon. Maybe a certain highly sophisticated interlocking brick system, if you catch my drift. Also, much like ChosenBorn, the track was the best thing about this episode. HOLY F*CK, it is gorgeous!
I feel like I’m the only one who likes Guts VS Nightmare… but this one is just beyond that. Like Vader VS Obito, Guts returned with the true respect, regardless of the winner. The fight AND the track went hard, even getting #1 on Trending!
This fight was amazing, honestly I think my favorite in the series, even tho I know nothing about fire emblem, or berserk. Hell, I actually wanted to do something I've never done before, make a review on a death battle episode, but still unsure about it cus I'd probably just praise it to no end
This was my 2nd most wanted episode and it genuinely might be my favorite episode. Just seeing Fire Emblem, one of my favorite series only beat by Pokémon and Sonic get covered was amazing, and the references in the fight like when Dimitri did the rush at Guts playing the Fire Emblem initiating sound effect. The 2 sharing the "Down to the Last One!" And the genuinely perfect ending, oh and the next time exists
I went to this episode expecting it to be great, but I really didn't expect it to not only become tied with Chosen Undead vs Dragonborn for not only my favorite episode of the season, but my 5th and 6th favorite episodes of the whole show. Seriously, this is the only episode besides Magneto vs Tetsuo that actually made me cry.
Oh wow, an anime episode that I actually liked. Overall, the first half of this season has been incredibly interesting, because the quality and character choices have been excellent, but with the exception of Rocket vs Stitch and Ant Man vs Atom (as well as that other anime fight I don't give a fuck about), it's been a constant onslaught of characters I love getting their asses beat which makes me subjectively like it less.
1st off. Guts vs dimitri is absolutely peak. My favorite of this current season, EZ, AND IM NOT EVEN A BIG FIRE EMBLEM FAN 2nd. I will admit it’s kiiind of a bad time to put in another marvel vs dc episode but I am very much interested in MM vs SS. Both characters are long overdue for an appearance on this show and I’m very much interested in learning more about Martian Manhunter and this can also help mah boi Silver Surfer get some dignity back after the crappy Fantastic Four movie he was in.
Both Berserk and Fire Emblem especially 3H which I got well over 1000s hours on are both my top 5 favorite franchises and while I do think Guts should have won simply seeing series I love so much that aren’t often talked about was enough for me
I’m glad I was actually correct in assuming the footage they used in Dimitri’s cutaway actually was Amphibia. P.S. I’m only halfway through Season 2, so don’t spoil it for me
This is honestly my favorite Death Battle period, everything about it just works so well for me. My top 2 favorites came nearly back to back, that's kind of funny to me in some sort of cosmic way. Also the "every single episode" joke got a chuckle out of me.
To start with this episode is absolutely fantastic probably my favorite of the season though it is pretty close. This season has just been absolutely amazing so far. Also I'm actually pretty excited about Silver Surfer vs Martian Manhunter. Sure there has been a lot of marvel vs DC but again the episodes this season have all been great and it seems like an interesting matchup with a lot of animation potential besides two flying bricks just punching each other and both feel like characters that really deserve an episode so yeah I'm pretty excited.
They better reference that one colab Silver Surfer had with Hank Hill in Silver Surfer's analysis. I live for that, even if I never gave a shit about Silver Surfer.
Fire emblem is easily onee of my favorite franchises and Dimitri is in my top 5 lords of it. And to see him get such a good debute for the series on the show and guts finally getting the episode he deserves made me so freaking happy. The amazing animation is as bloody as it should be and it was smooth as i could hope. This season has been kicking ass in terms of 3d fights
This episode was easily my favorite so far this season. And its the second this seaaon with a character i really like, the first being choosen undead and dragon born. The fights better, the analysis is more interesting, and the death and winner make sense. Its so good
I'm biased as hell but this episode is probably my fav this season A great and deserving return for guts (in both the fight and the analysis) A really good first time for fire emblem in Death battle for the analysis God's hand is really competing with fireborn as my fav track this season I wish they calc'd Dimitri's stuff in his analysis so it didn't make it obvious who would win tho still a 10/10 for me
11:59 Potentially but fire emblem scaling is… weird. Like how the light based attacks aren’t light speed do to bring magic. That applys to the lighting too (debatably)
We planned to initially but he wanted to do his own one after he’s had more time to sit with it. Also he’s been busy this week with the new Genshin region so we wouldn’t have had the time anyway
As funny as that would be, to even make the top half of this list it’d need to be leagues better than any other Marvel vs DC episode in the last almost 7 years so I am not holding my breath
I only disagree with the outcome because I think the Berserker armor scales higher (It allows scaling to characters on another level that only appear towards the end of the current chapters). Other than that I love both characters too much to care and my two favorite themes are related to the characters so overall just the biggest W.
As a Fire Emblem fan who has yet to play 3 Houses (i do plan on playing it once i'm done with a few other games tho) i was incredibly happy with how Fire Emblem's debut on the show turned out. Easilly my personal favorite episode of the season so far and i'll be shocked if anything manages to top it this year.
I must say, they've been knocking it out of the park with the 3D DBs this season. All three being S tier levels of quality, and this battle was insane. From someone who knew nothing about either series (Though I do want to get into Fire Emblem with my Three Houses copy), this only makes me want to check out their media even more. Besides some nitpicky stuff, this is just an excellent fight that shows off both character stuff and completely does both characters justice. At first, I was upset that there wasn't a gory kill (Honestly, we're long overdue for one this season since the premiere, but that's just me) but after truly understanding what was happening made I feel this was one of the best endings to a DB. For bias reasons, I still prefer Vader vs Obito, but this is a close 2nd place for the season. As for Martian Manhunter vs Silver Surfer, was a little annoyed that we are getting another Marvel vs DC only 1 episode after the previous one, but honestly, they've been doing a great job this season, so I'm down for it. I too have a tiny bit of nostalgia from watching Super Hero Squad and playing the game as a kid as that's my only connection to Silver Surfer. So I look forward to this one... but will still continue to pray for a Persona Death Battle this season lmao. Great review as always!
I'm so happy with how this turned out. Fire Emblem was my most anticipated franchise to reach the show, and Guts vs. Dimitri was my second most wanted matchup for it (I will stan Lucivyle until the day I die). They more than delivered. I legitimately get chills down my spine at the ending every single time. It's so beautifully done. Guts was given the respect he deserves, as was my boy Dimitri. This is brawling with Chosen Undead vs. Dragonborn for my top of the season slot right now, at absolute minimum it's my number 2. God I'm so happy.
I like this episode, but this solidified my opinion on not having Fire Emblem characters in Death Battle. They’re just inherently not very easy to judge power-wise. We don’t actually know how fast, strong, or tough they are. In my mind, FE characters are not that much higher than peak human. They’re able to cut logs cleanly and that’s it. _They should not be able to survive a magic nuke,_ or even coming close to being able to. Just because Dragon Rhea did, and Edelgard beat Dragon Rhea, and Dimitri beat Edelgard, that doesn’t mean that they’re actually that close in power. Because of the nature of the gameplay in Fire Emblem, we don’t know if Edelgard can canonically overpower Dragon Rhea or if she just won because of Byleth’s strategic mind. Same thing for Dimitri against tall Edelgard. I don’t blame Death Battle for assuming that Dimitri was on the stronger end of the speculation spectrum since they tend to assume the best out of specific versions of characters unless there’s something that contradicts it majorly, and I don’t usually have a problem with high-balling, but Fire Emblem characters are a bit different. There’s too much context that the players just never get to see that could lead characters to being regular human level, continent level, or anything in between. Again, I just don’t think that FE characters are very easy to analyze in this manner and I still don’t want to seem them again in Death Battle even though I love the series.
We see in the cutscene it was edelgard and byleth alone fighting rhea with the rest of the army fighting the other beasts- even if you want to downscale the amount of damage edelgard did to rhea due to byleth being there to as little as 10%- dimitri STILL scales higher.
and yet that is the problem, canon wise dimitri has no feat to show how strong he is aside crushing a skull in armor. The javelin of light has nothing to do with rhea barely surviving two, since 1, rhea has better defense cuz of her dragon scales, and two, relix weapons bypass her defences no matter how pysically strong you are.@@FranTheNerd
@@FranTheNerdthe explosions were nowhere near as powerful as death battle claimed if you judge their actual size and rhea is at the brink of death when that cutscene starts being barely able to move showing that they just had a large scale battle. Seriously, watch the cutscene, it was at the end of the fight
@@firenze6478 yes, the scene IMPLYING IT WAS ONLY BYLETH AND EDELGARD FIGHTING HER seriously did you not watch it And even at a 10th of the power that is accurate btw - Dimitri would still be 400x stronger.
@@FranTheNerd look at the crater left behind at the fortress, the javelins are nowhere near the power death battle rated it and watch the cutscene again. Rhea can barely move and edelgard and byleth are covered in burns and the city is in ruins. The cutscene plays only after you snd your army have reduced her hp to zero four times and it shows when the dragon struggles just to open her mouth
While my own hatred for three houses does kinda make this episode worse for me, i would still have to say this is no doubt the second best of the season. Dragonborn vs chosen undead is still a hard matchup to follow maybe next time we can.... who am i kidding its another marvel vs dc despite half of this season half the season either being marvel vs dc or having a combantat from either series. all i hope its a decent episode because i've seen the community kinda being annoyed at the overabundence of marvel and dc this season
I'm so incredibly happy that Fire Emblem's debut is such an incredible episode, featuring one of my favorite characters in the series and one of my favorite matchups in general. Might be my new favorite episode in the series.
Biggest L of this episode is them making most of God’s hand non vocal for the fight for some reason. Idk if its just me but I cannot hear the lyrics after Dmitri stabs guts against the tree.
The fight is incredible, and I'm shocked to learn Dimitri's story and the Fire Emblem. Also Byleth as the "Greatest Smash Bros. character" is the GOAT. The Cutaway Gag in Dimitri rundown is my favorite seeing both Wiz, Boomstick, and even Jocelyn having different takes on which class is superior. For Next time I'm pretty much down seeing Marvel Vs DC Matchups
Honestly this battle is one of my least fav mainly because of the characterization. It just feels soulless and completely misunderstand dimitri’s character at this point in his character. He’s just some edgy guy this episode and not an actual character.
