Death By Fishing: How Taiwan's Seafood Got Tainted With Blood | CNA Correspondent

As a top seafood exporter, Taiwan has the world's second largest distant water fishing fleet after China. But behind its fresh catch is the blood, sweat and tears of many migrant fishermen. Taiwan has more than 1,000 deep-water fishing vessels, hiring some 20,000 foreign fishermen from Southeast Asia. They are the main source of labour that supports an industry that's worth billions of dollars a year.
But in 2020, for the first time, Taiwan's seafood was classified as products of forced labour by the US, following a string of allegations that underpaid migrant fishermen were abused and overworked to death. In this episode of CNA Correspondent, we tell the stories of these fishermen and how Taiwan's seafood becomes, literally, tainted with their blood.

Good job CNA, we need more honest documentaries like this, both for workers who suffer these circumstances so they know there's something they can do about it and us, the privileged majority who don't have to slave to provide for our families.

No Taiwan is a country and should be protected and acknowledged its not the fault of the people it's just a group of Chinese. Their should be more Laws in place in Taiwan with a Bill of Rights and govnament needs to use a strict structed wage system for all jobs for Taiwan but in no way should Taiwanese people take the blame because of a few crazy people

@@Kai-ic4mp China has death penalty can see why Chinese government wanted to take over Hong Kong because in Hong Kong their are also a lot of criminals and killers that travel to Taiwan for freedom from judgement, similarly to Australia no death penalty means no control

Ship owner and captains are the sole responsible for the care of the seamen on board. If one of them is not doing his responsibility you will see more death and abuse. 🙏 For you that you bring the topic to the public, still governments need to crack down on them for harder checks.

Exploitation all over the world is the name of the game, how hard is it for the governments to register all workers on a boat, and ask the coastguard to spot check at random, for abuse, they should all be held accountable

Despite all the inefficiency and beaurocracy that the annoying labour laws cause over here in India, one upside is that if something like this was happening here, the labour unions would royally screw these fishing companies.

Greenpeace folks sound like also are Taiwanese. I wish these foreign workers all get fair share of compensation and better quality of life. We need to see now dark side of our country revealed so those issues can be fixed. I hope that 70 people could be hired as planned ASAP.

Greenpeace is based in Amsterdam. Just because foreign organizations and outlets hire some ethnically identical staff for the reported country does not mean they represent local attitudes. Other Southeast Asian migrants in Taiwan have also faced abuse or discrimination, most recently from coronavirus restrictions.
