Love this series. Would love to see more of this. Especially like the excitement Blayne (and hopefully the other reviewers) bring to this. You can instantly tell that he loves this album
Deaths greatest album hands down. It was a complete game changer and the best lineup Chuck ever had in Death with Paul, Sean & Steve. Just wished they made another album together!
As a patreon I request all Death albums to be reviewed lol.. This made my day. And it is my favorite Death album. I love this series..I love this channel..I love Death!
I’d say that the sound of perseverance is the best Death album. With songs like Scavenger of human sorrow, spirit crusher, flesh & the power it holds, a moment of clarity, the awesome cover of Judas Priest’s, Painkiller & the iconic instrumental track, voice of the soul, it’s hard to top this album.
I think if somehow 1991 death recorded Sop in 91 with that ferociousness from human it would go down with zero arguments as the greatest death metal album of all time
That’s boy Blayne, much better. I’m sure Sean appreciates the reboot dude !! Totally agree one of the pinnacle Death Metal albums in history, and surely one of the earliest proto progressive death metal albums of course !!!
Hey Steve/Sean at least it was arts close 😂 this is a cool new segment, hopefully you guys can do these more regularly ... maybe throw out some titles every episode for the next one review and set up a poll ? Just a suggestion.
Mario S I feel like that one gets the least appreciation, no? Maybe I’m wrong about that, but that’s the vibe I’ve gotten. I think it’s great though. Having come out of a childhood going to a crazy evangelical school and super fundamentalist family, I’ve always liked Chuck’s critical themes that relate on Spiritual Healing, and just the more “mature” direction, in general. Don’t get my wrong, I love the first two albums, and the brutal violence and gore can be cathartic with the brutal playing, but I really prefer lyrics that are more “cerebral”, and no doubt SH is where Chuck really started the transformation and progression of Death. ✌️
This is a good album but I've never understood why it's considered by many to be the best Death album. They're all great. My favorites would be Symbolic and the underappreciated Sound of Perseverance
Agreed...they are all phenomal.comsidering the climate..and chucks nverending pursuit of evolution...this was the first to sound this progressive ...patterns to symbolic to sound is an amazing journey!!!!
This is the album that got me into Death. I got every album afterwards, but the straight up brutality of Human just isn't matched by the other albums for me. Cosmic Sea is one of my favorite instrumentals too so there's that. ITP absolutely rips, but i just like Human more.
I fucking know, when it comes to choosing the best album of Death, it's impossible, at least for me, it's very subjective and by what I've seen, people can choose their favorite albums based on discovering them by an album or simply because of how they feel by listening to a certain type of album from Death. I love them all, and I would suffer if someone asked me to only choose one.
The 2011 reissue of this album is a masterclass on how to remix an album properly. It sounds wonderful and much better than the original, in my opinion.
I prefer the original mix. It sounds so huge and alien which suits the material. The remix may sound more "pro" but also more conventional. I like my Death Metal when it sounds like it's purposefully standing apart from rock conventions, on some distant vacant planet.
This is a great idea.......keep reviewing the classics. Introduce some of these younger metal heads to things they never would have thought to listen to otherwise. There is SO MUCH amazing material from the 80s and early 90s.......I think you'll get more viewers/ subscribers if you throw a classic review into the mix once a week or so. Hope you all continue to do this! FYI I would rank Symbolic and The Sound of Perserverence albums right up there with this one
4:22 "All tech-death dudes are space perverts nowadays" is gonna be my mantra for the rest of my life. Great job Banger and great job Blayne, ya'll killed it in this review. I wonder if we'll ever get Sam reviewing Sep's Beneath The Remains.
My first Death album ever, the one which introduced me to the metal band I love the most. I've experienced all those passages mentioned by you, Blayne. The drumming intro, followed by the building-up riff and few seconds later... everything started to kick in both my ears and my brain. THOSE RIFFS, THOSE SOLOS, THOSE DRUMS, THOSE VOCALS, THOSE LYRICS... Everything sounded brutal, listenable and technical at the same time. During those years I wasn't a big fan of death metal and I used to listen mostly to thrash but that album, togheter with Cause of Death by Obituary, changed my mind and I've never turned back. To be honest, I even liked the Scott Burns production, that typical "death metal from florida" sound, which he created at his Morrisond Studios in Tampa. Later, I've discovered Cynic and I understood why Chuck has choosen Masvidal and Reinert to be part of the band for the Human recording sessions and tour. Sadly, two of those guys have left us but I will never forget them for what they have given us trough their music.
My personal faves from Death are actually Symbolic and The sound of perseverance. Two masterpieces in a row. Chuck did it like no one else in history will ever do it. RIP eternal legend
@@HCWz-_-Over9000 I agree, all of them are masterpieces, even though it’s ironic that you mention Spiritual Healing cause that’s my least favorite from them haha but I still love it, just not as much as the rest, specially the last 4 albums
@@landinization True, thats completely understandable.👍 My favorite Death album is a tie between Leprosy and The Sound of Perseverance. And Human is just as good too! Favorite tracks on Human is SEE THROUGH DREAMS and SUICIDE MACHINE🔥🔥🔥
This is an amazing series idea! I have you guys to thank for so many of the modern metal bands I now call my favourite, and hopefully now I can not only reminisce over classics, but have you guys uncover hidden classics for me! Banger TV for the win hahah
First time that I find myself agreeing with Blayne's assessment of an album. Hoping that he does one for Bolt Thrower's 'Those Once Loyal', as I know he's a fan & that album deserves alot more ears, & banging of skulls.
One of the best and most satisfying reviews I've watched in a long time trust me I'm a RU-vid Junkie. I remember hearing a death cassette spiritual healing and human about the same time both of them blew my mind away never really took their debut that serious although it's more serious than I could ever be. Very nostalgic feelings remembering where I was when I was a teenager and now having the internet and backtracking all these groups these members have been in and side projects and whatnot. You sure got a way with words and yes yes yes I agree agree agree!!!!😎🤓☠☠☠☠
The crazy thing is Symbolic is my second to least favorite Death album. I've seen every album listed as someones favorite a couple times. Death's discography might be the best in metal history.
Love this! Blayne is perfect for just freaking out on how good the greats are. Individual Thought Patterns was the first extreme album I got into. Changed my life. But in the last several years Human has become my favorite too.
Love to watch Blaynes reviews, they always highlight the best and if necessary the worst and can offer insights into pieces you may have overlooked yourself. Deaths albums have all aged well, the first 3 re-affirming the beginnings and quick progression of Death metal moving into new and progressive realms. Keep up the good work Blayne!
Paul's solo on "Flattening of Emotions" is my all-time favorite. Here's this crushingly heavy song about everything that's beautiful and good completely falling apart and there's this gorgeous, soaring guitar solo to lighten the mood. Right before it all comes crashing down and the band starts pummeling your face again.
Human by Death and Necroticism from Carcass would be my two favourite Death Metal records of all time. Both of which are released in the same year and month of 91. Literally 8 days apart!
This is my all time favorite Death album. It has a certain quality and sheer intensity. It doesn't feel forced it's well crafted. It keeps you coming back for more. And Chuck's voice is at his best on this album R.i.p . true raw emotion and the drums oh Sean how you will be missed.
Amazing album. Every Death album is perfect but this is a landmark album for sure. I think other good albums for this series would be Carcass' Heartwork and Emperor's In the Nightside Eclipse.
I remember having Spiritual Healing and then my best friend got Human and everything changed . I'm forty two and still love this album there were so many great albums from 90-95 this is a classic. Thanks Chuck and thank you guys for keeping it alive.
Holy shit bro, that album is beyond masterpiece for me, after you listen to that you see other thrash bands as if they were not even in the same category. Would be amazing for a review and like Death, Coroner albums are all great, I respect and enjoy a lot what they did in Grin.
@@RealDeathMetalLover "Grin" is actually my favorite but I was pandering to the crowd who think, "if it was their last release, it cannot possibly be their best. Only the old stuff!" Even though "Grin" is almost 30 years old. You get my drift.
@@UziSuicide666 I feel you, that album is so creative and it has one of the harshests and aggressive sounds in their tracks, like serpent moves and grin for example, all of them have crushing riffs, they really set apart from everything else with that album, never heard something like that!
IMO Sound of Perseverance takes the cake. The progressive elements and Death metal elements of that album were far beyond it's time and still stand up to metal produced today.
There’s nothing about SoP that’s ahead of its time, Death already made that sound for years prior and prog Metal already had far more accomplished and more interesting albums by the.
Nice. I dig pretty much anything from Death. Cool to go back and review some older so-called classics. That label gets thrown around a lot but in Death's case they've earned that label. Do some old Bolt Thrower next
Agreed 100% Best album in their catalog, 2nd being Spiritual Healing. Now I'm really loving GRUESOME which play origianl songs in a tribute to DEATH style. It's like hearing Spiritual Healing Part 2, and Leprosy part 2! Love those guys.
Special band to have their entire discography subject to debate on what’s best. Symbolic for me followed by The sound of perseverance. The musicianship is second to none.
Right on. They NEVER had a bad album. For me Human is indeed the best one however. No ranking is wrong when it comes to Death though. Just killer music.
I originally dug SOP and Symbolic most being new to death metal. Now, at least for now I really like SBG and Leprosy in terms of style. Chuck's screams on those albums are gold.
I’m glad you enjoy concise and abbreviated albums like me Blayne, I thought I was the only one who didn’t want a 70 minute CD of 15 songs. The only exceptions are Napalm Death and Sick of It All, those I’ll accept 44 songs per album.
Sony didn't lose the master tapes, they just didn't want to give them up initially. Human was actually remixed by Jim Morris of Morrisound per Chuck's final wishes (Jim unfortunately due to illness wasn't available for the Individual Thought Patterns remix, but Alan Duches did a pretty good job on that). Also the album cover was certainly a reference to the band encountering a horrible car accident (and there wasn't much they could do to help) where two people eventually died from their wounds... Yeah, that affected the album. This is all in the liner notes of the deluxe edition remix/remaster.
I would have been interested to hear Sam's take on this album in addition to yours, because he was probably listening to Death at the time when it came out and it was such a diversion from Death's first three which a lot of fans didn't like. An idea for future episodes?
this was the first death album i listened to & so despite all their work being amazing it holds a special place in my heart. the guitar solo on see through dreams is almost like a religious experience every time i listen to it. i'm glad he mentioned the drum & bass addition tracks, that shit was so confusing to listen to but it does showcase the pure skill to their rhythm section for sure.
protolexis TSOP is far from being a death metal album. It’s a progressive metal album with harsh vocals, not innovative whatsoever, but still a great album.
Please do Individual Thought Patterns next! What a hell of a ride of an album that was!! It's so juicy and... you know what? Just let the album speak for itself and let the fans judge
Love the Ardbeg hat Blayne! Scottish whiskey is the best and I won't be told otherwise haha. Sound of Perseverance is my personal no.1 just purely on the proggy elements. RIP Chuck x
I haven’t even watched the review yet and thank you for doing this. I recently discovered Chuck and Death... wish I would’ve picked up on him along time ago.
This album was so BRUTAL the sounds on both the original master and the Re-master are just crushing. Chuck's lyrics evolve and so do his vocals. His lower growl is at it's peak on this record and it shows he took it as far as he could when you consider the route he went for Individual Thought Patterns. The same applies to the musical approach on this record. You see the bass come to the forefront a little more and DEATH starts creating big musical "landscapes" that the listener becomes immersed in. Listen to it with good headphones, it will suck you in and not let go till Vacant Planets. A classic that I think still holds up considering I was 3 when it was released and fell in love with it at 17 or 18 (around 2005/2006). As far as favorite album goes, it's impossible for me to call, listening to the evolution of this band throughout it's career is the most fulfilling thing for me.
I am glad people still love this album. When I got it I was just freaking blown away, and I can still listen to it. And yes, it is an album you just devour and go "oh, that's the end, guess I'll start over." It's funny, way back when I think I listened to Cynic stuff more often, but over time that all kind of has lost a bit over time. But this album and all the stuff after it I still love. And now I want to listen to Control Denied.
More of this, please. Love the idea and great way to kick it off with objectively one of the most important bands in metal history. Can't wait to see more of these! (Hellfiend666 from Patreon, btw, not just some rando doucher. Well, not rando, anyway.)
