Seems to me that he represents the viewer, or humans in general. Most of us like to see suffering (either fictional or real, the fact that attack on titan is popular proves this), we romantisize this suffering we make quotes about it we become interested in them but when it happens to us we hate it.

No one who dies of anything other than old age ever really feel at peace and acceptance with their conciousness coming to an end in a painful and inescapable way.

It represents humanity to its fullest. People enjoy watching other people suffer, no matter if it's just 'animated' but hate it when it happens to them or when other people do the same to them. That's just how humans work. They beautify the pain but hate the wounds and the wounded.
