OK man... I followed your instruction for Bass, Guitar and Vocals in my own DAW and mixed the drum machine in there. I think it sounds decent. 10x clearer than how I used to be mixing things, WAY better. But probably not as good as other dudes out there. maybe i'm at the point where i just need practice. But I finally made a song about cookie monster baking cookies. Took two whole weeks lol your tutorials are a HUGE help.

Thanks man Now that I've mixed it down and everything though.... I'm really wondering how I can make it "explode" a bit more. I compared to some other artist's songs from my iTunes, the band "Cut Up" in this case, and i noticed... My track sounds kind of dull in comparison. It's like they could get theirs louder without having any static and stuff. If I try to go louder, it just goes over that 0db there and it's like... bleh. Doesn't explode but it sounds clear at least. Any ideas to help that improve?

Sounds like you're talking about the mastering stage. You'll want to look into limiters and master chains. I have a video about that here about building a master chain within SONAR. =)

Sick riff man. In the "acoustic" bit it gets really evil :)

Hey Scott, what makes the Q10 more ideal for offending frequency hunting than, lets say Fabfilter? Did not catch the reasoning behind that. Not arguing just taking notes here :b or was that more of a preference sort of thing? (Referring to part around 7:17) Speaking of, it was pretty difficult to hear a difference on those small cuts you made with it. I baaaarely heard it. I'm listening through some $200 monitors that just arrived this morning. Should I be worried or was it just really subtle? (They're my first monitors haha that's why I'm super cautious)
@ChernobylAudio666
@ChernobylAudio666 7 лет назад
Hey there, Fabfilter is a better plugin because it's technology is newer. Q10 just particularly shines as a resonance hunter. I'm just used to using it so I always grab it for notching and doing resonance work. Fabfilter would work just fine, As for barely hearing cuts - don't worry about that, it'll come in time. It just comes with a ton of practice and knowing what to listen for. The other reason it's so subtle has to do with me wanting to just remove enough of the crappy frequencies to clean up the guitar without making it sound too dull. When you start notching up in the high frequencies of the guitar, it'll kill the excitement and presence of the guitar tone, so it's a very intricate process. Hope that made sense!

It's definitely a masochist process at times.... but the end result is what I'm after, so I try to keep my sight at the light at the end of the tunnel :D

The e530 sounds bad with a tube screamer it's already super tight so you have completely removed all the fundamental from the guitar notes so there's no power or sustain left: just buzz.

I'm just thinking, if you had to do this with hardware, you'd need a couple hundred grand in eq and compression.

what kind of electrical problems do you have???
@ChernobylAudio666
@ChernobylAudio666 7 лет назад
Old Soviet building with 220 watt connections. My guitar also has no shielding. Before I had the DI box and better cables, I was picking up radio stations when I was trying to record guitar parts. It's pretty flipping annoying!

Hey there! Doubling up the tracks help create the "big" sound that you hear on all metal records today :)
@goatsurgeon

CHERNOBYL STUDIOS I've been thinking about keeping rhythm guitar hard left and right and lead guitar on 75-75 - vocals 50-50 and bass 25-25 and drums between 45-45 and whatnot. Is that a good panning plan?
@ChernobylAudio666
@ChernobylAudio666 7 лет назад
Kick drum and bass need to be right down the middle (as well as vocals), that's what will hold and glue your mix together, making it sound big and thick. If you start messing with the panning on those you'll jack up the glue of the mix and it'll sound really weird. If you double/triple your vocals, you can experiment having a vocal down the middle, and then doubles on the left/right panned at various percentages to what sounds good to you, but general practice is kick, bass, vocals - down the middle. Guitars are made to be as wide and big as possible, and that's where all the over-dubbing and double-tracking comes from, to help create that wide spaced sound.

CHERNOBYL STUDIOS Do you have any tips for how to mix in a guitar solo to give it more spotlight in the mix with some clarity?
@ChernobylAudio666
@ChernobylAudio666 7 лет назад
First is to change the tone of your solo just a tad. You can use the same amp settings, maybe add a bit more mids. Second thing is you'll want to do a tiny bit of automation on the rhythm guitars to bring them down like 1 or 2 dB in the mix while the solo is doing it's thing. Keep the solo bright but smooth (no high spikey stuff) and play it cleanly!

@ChernobylAudio666

Why don't you? Seems you can't get a good tone either way. If you think no bands or studios are using amp simulators right now, you best just keep living under your rock, get comfortable and warm, and never come out. Good luck to you.
