In the village of Castle Farthing a mean-spirited, spiteful, curmudgeonly old man is found drugged and strangled in the kitchen of his cottage, with no obvious clues to the perpetrator of the crime.
DI Falconer and Acting DS Carmichael are summoned from the police headquarters in the nearby town of Market Darley and begin to uncover a web of grudges against the old man and a sea of familial connections between those who knew him.
As the heat of July continues relentlessly, tempers flare, disturbing the usual rural calm of the village, and the normally imperturbable Harry Falconer. Faced with a crime with no obvious prime suspect and the idiosyncrasies of his new partner, Carmichael, is he gradually losing his grip on the case as the body count rises?

Hello Charlotte, wonderful stories from your mater. Most enjoyable. Somewhere in the MC Beaton, Simon Brett school of detectives.! Excellent as an audio book, which brings me to my point, the kind of listener these books attract will, I suspect, not be impressed with AI narration. I certainly, will never listen to it. If you and your father wish to continue to promote these books successfully, please consider avoiding AI. Life is soulless enough as it is.! Nevertheless, much appreciated and well loved.

Andrea Frazer is the only author I have ever written a fan letter to. She has given me so much reading joy. I was devastated when I read of her death. It’s Sunday and my dear husband is away for a few days. This is relevant… I listened, uninterrupted, to this beautifully narrated story and enjoyed it very much. A wonderful who-dunnit and a bit of a surprise. Even when the killer's identity was revealed, they were still my favorite character. Also, I will cheekily ask if you could get your friends to subscribe to the channel (did you subscribe?) to help enable more audio books to be produced.

I loved this story, the characters, the plot. In an earlier post I mentioned a skip in the audio- I deleted that comment, because my earphones were to the cause. The narrator is fabulous. As I already posted in the Belchester Chronicles, I'm from Germany and I simply like and enjoy her way of putting in this special English humor, which I have not found anywhere else until now. Reading the descriptions of daily life, the characters, their behaving and kommunication as well as their thinking reminds me of finding out the differences between german and english mentality during our many visits of our dear english friends. I like these books very very much. Thank you for publishing them here! 👍

What a fabulous find! I do a lot of handwork, and love a good audiobook to engage my mind at the same time. This is my first book, and certainly won’t be my last. I am just loving everything about it. The humour, I can just picture the characters, and the wonderful narrator just make it such a pleasure to listen to. What a beautifully written story, as i listened i could clearly see in my minds eye all the people in the story and the village they lived in, a joy to listen to, and narrated equally as beautiful. TV programmes are so awful now, it has been refreshing to listen to this.

I really enjoyed this well-plotted mystery. Beautifully narrated and wriiten with a keen eye for human foibles, the array of characters quickly draw you in. I loved the dry humour, too - especially the reactions to Carmichael's wardrobe.

This is my first of her novels Ive read but shall definitely look out for future releases. You're keeping her memory alive.... excellent narration although I dont know how I'll fare with AI. I really enjoy this book. Language is bang up to date and has been said the narrator is excellent. I klove audios because I have arthritis in both wrist meaning I can’t hold a book. Macular degeneration has cause blurring letters so in all very frustrating. Plus you can listen day or night and doing other things. A big big thank you
