one of the best orders any commander can pass on. If you don't have a constructive suggestion to the SOLUTION of the circumstance in hand, just SHUT THE FUCK UP!
@@blackiechong4344 Check yours. He is buried at the site of what is now the Dwight D. Eisenhower Presidential Library, Museum and Boyhood Home, in Abilene Kansas.
@Larry Dreiling Isn't that on the grounds of the Library, Museum and Boyhood Home? Never having been there, I'm not sure. Either way...thanks for the info.
In second grade our class dressed up like the presidents and each had to read a small poem about ours. Low and behold, i was assigned Eisenhower (I had lost the paper with his name and had to ask my dad who the president with the initials DDE was lol). Ever since that project, he's been my favorite president. For the dress up, I got to wear the helmet of my ancestor who was a part of the D-Day invasion on june 6, 1944 so that was extra special
No one served this country more or as often as Dwight David Eisenhower,From a West Point grad to Supreme Allied Commander of The European Theater of WW2 to General of The Army to Commander in Chief.
Oh yes, In fact when the remainder of The Nazi High Command came to sign the terms of surrender the only 2 things he did not do was either spit on them or flip them the bird,Barring that,He showed them no respect.
He was a big time hero and proved everyone wrong on his ability to win the war in Europe. When he was president the country was the best it’s ever been. I hope some younger people will up who he was, obviously history isn’t taught in schools anymore, they’re afraid this country will become great again.
For some reason I always imagined General Eisenhower as a bit like Colonel Potter from M*A*S*H. Don't accuse me of blasphemy please lol. I just seem to see Eisenhower's personality as similar to Harry Morgan's character. Army hardened, tough but also caring. A decent man.
A decent & honorable man, led the allied forces in Europe during WWII, President of both Columbia University & 34th of the United States, an author, painter, etc.
I was just watching an early color video of Ike and he was talking about how technology was advancing and how situations now (the late 50's) required an instantaneous response as opposed to having weeks to mull them over. Imagine if he lived to today! He would have been overwhelmed by the instantaneous nature of today's society.
Cizfinestbaby92 That's because he was a republican from before the parties did that big ideology flip flop after Kennedy got elected. He was the last republican who actually gave a shit about poor people and not corporations.
Cizfinestbaby92 ..you are dense enough to bend light. Eisenhower is a giant in conservative and Republican circles. He had strength, and the will to recognize and defeat any enemy. ..... The exact opposite of the race hustling poverty pimp that leaves his ghetto stink in the white house today.
Mesmeridium, Eisenhower by 1968-1969 had a severely weakened heart. Now, had a pre 1955 Eisenhower had bypass surgery coupled with antihypertensives and Cholesterol medications, hell he may have made it to 90!
How dare you bicker here, a page of reverence, memorial and respect. Gen. Eisenhower was and still is a man everyone can learn something from. That's what I liked best about him.
My Dad is a WWII and Korean combat veteran and he said Eisenhower should have stopped the execution of Pvt Edward Slovik. All it would take was a simple command from him to spare that boys life.
They're referring to him as "General". Does military rank supercede "former president" in the official announcement of death? Or did he retain rank? God bless him as well.
@athabascka : You may have your facts wrong. Most German soldiers of the Third Reich were NOT nazis; indeed, most of the German people during the Third Reich were NOT nazis, although they could have been, had they chosen such. Check it out. Learn history, then get back to me.
Interesting that they call him General instead of President. That might be the protocol for military personnel but seems like the news reporter should call him President since that is higher rank than General.
Actually, Eisenhower requested to be referred to as General. I thought the same thing when listening to a phone conversation he had with JFK, where Kennedy calls him "General," only to later read that this was done at Eisenhower's request.
+sqwuade Ike was a 5 star general & by law was technically considered on active duty till his death. He resigned his commission when became President, and was reinstated to GOA when JFK assumed office.
Source: James Bacque's OTHER LOSSES Correction: The German soldiers were classified as Disarmed Enemy Forces, not "combatants." Note that the Red Cross was forbidden to visit these former German troops, and they died by the hundreds of thousands of starvation, thirst, exposure and disease.
@RichardElden ??? This is just garbage lol. France and England invaded Egypt w/o Eisenhower's consent, and Eisenhower forced them to withdraw. He pretty much saved the Suez Crisis. Back on topic. Eisenhower is a very underrated American president; most people only know him as the WW2 general. He was probably the 2nd or 3rd best president in the 20th century, after only Franklin Roosevelt. Economy was strong, and he dealt with the Cold War the right way.
After Kennedy died, his portrait replaced Benjamin Franklin on the half dollar. And after Eisenhower died, his portrait was featured on the then new dollar coin. In recent years, various presidents have been featured on the dollar coin. I'm not sure if this included Lincoln (penny), Jefferson (nickel), Roosevelt (dime), Washington (quarter) and the aforementioned Kennedy and Eisenhower. :-/
"Saved" Colonel Nasser's regime? No, the Soviets would've saved his regime had England and France continued. You know, sometimes you do what you gotta do to avoid world war in a nuclear context.
Carolyn, Once Ike was given the 5th star he was formally on the active-duty roll for life, which is a tradition for that rank in militaries around the world. Only when he got the GOP nomination in 1952 did he resign his commission - in the U. S. active duty officers aren't allowed to serve in public office. Once he was out of office Congress formally reinstated his 5-star rank. Not that he ever wore the uniform again but he was entitled to a) a paycheck, b) display the 5-stars as he saw fit (mostly on the flag of his putting green), and c) a military driver and pilot to take him anywhere he went.
Although Eisenhower could forever be addressed as PRESIDENT Eisenhower or GENERAL Eisenhower, the fact that he was one of only a SMALL handful of FIVE-STAR generals (a rank accorded ONLY in time of DECLARED war ... ***DECLARED*** war), it would be more fitting to address him by that RARE rank. There have been FAR FEWER ***FIVE*** STAR generals than there have been presidents. One other thing --- and someone cam CLOSE to this, although she was still IN ERROR in her way of stating it --- a FIVE-STAR rank is a PERMANENT, LIFETIME rank ... that is, a FIVE-STAR general (or admiral) retains his (and I say "his", because ALL have been MEN) rank for LIFE, and is PAID and retains a STAFF for LIFE.
To serve honorable in the US military is something that stays with a person. I know three guys in business (an auto body shop) and a fourth guy (the business owner) is their former drill sergeant & to this day almost 30 years later, they still call him "Sarge".
@mindspring57 But if he had his way in the 1950s, China might not be the power it is today, and definitely not a nuclear power. So no chance for a nuclear war.
I was born during Eisenhower's presidency. Being of German-American background, Pennsylvania Dutch specifically, I must say that Eisenhower was guilty of crimes against humanity. After the surrender of German forces across Europe, Eisenhower had the German soldiers rounded up, put into camps, classified not as POWs but as combatants, so they would not be under the protection of the Geneva Convention. Let it be known that he gave orders to starve almost a million captive Germans to death.
Mr. Eisenhower was a decent man and a true patriot. I'd suggest folks read the book "Ike's Bluff". It is a warts-and-all documentation of the good and bad of the Eisenhower Administration, including his many health battles, his alarming drug and alcohol usage, his attempts at controlling his volcanic temper and his overall decency in the face of a lot of right-wing horseshit. I am not a fan of conservatives, but if Republicans today were more like General Eisenhower, at least they'd be worthy of respect. What do we have today? Donald Trump, Bobby Jindal, Rick Perry and the God-awful Bush family.
Roger Wilko IF you knew Eisenhower, you would have despised him because he wouldn't be liberal enough for you. He would of never treated the military the way Clinton and Obama have as their personal out house, especially Obama. In 1959, we had 1.5 million on active duty alone and they were adding benefits to the armed forces--not taking them away. Better stick to kissing Obama's sorry butt.
streetrace442 Nobody that ever sat in the White House knew, understood and despised the modern military than DDE. He knew waste when he saw it. In the early nuclear age, he couldn't sleep at night because LeMay and some of the joint chiefs went about their own plans without consulting him. Truman was right... Eisenhower, in some ways, was over his head as president. He knew his legacy would be as a General, and asked JFK to give him back his military rank once out of office. "Ike's Bluff"... read it. Learn.
Roger Wilko Eisenhower was anything but over his head. However, for the sake of argument, if that was true about him, Obama has been over his head from day one. But who with an IQ above their shoe size doesn't know that?
@cheomire During the war, it was not known whether he was a Democrat or a Republican, or whether he had any political inclinations at all. In fact, after the war, Democrats actively sought to nominate him to the Presidency. It was only then that he revealed he was a "Kansas Republican."
.. Yes, the current EvilBushie-run Republican Party would boot a decent man like Eisenhower out of it... the EvilBushies didn't even like him back in the day, but voted for him because he could end the long run of Dem presidents... .. Eisenhower, the last decent Republican president... every one after him was 'w'orse than the one before...
I am surprised that the reporter referred to him as "General", rather than "President" Eisenhower. I thought the title "President" was retained by former Presidents when they left office.
Even so, this was a rather important event and they should have kept a videotape of the broadcast. They've been using tape since 1958, but mostly for entertainment purposes. thank goodness all the JFK assassination coverage is still preserved on videotape.
This was not meant as a lack of respect by any means. Ike came to be loved by America as one of our most successful Generals, and in the mind of the public he never stopped being one. Same with George Washington and Ulysses S. Grant. They will always be strongly identified both as U.S. Army Generals and Presidents, and that only adds to their historic distinction instead of taking away from it.
Eisenhower snubbed and insulted President Truman, on his inauguration. There will never be an excuse for this action, and it is without any prior or subsequent repeat. Truman was a great president who faced some of the most difficult and monumental decisions in American history. Eisenhower's greatest claim to greatness as a president was his distaste for Nixon.
compare what's in the white house now to ike, the national hero. is there anyone out there now who could get back our country's greatness? maybe gen. petraeus
PoliticalJunke Eisenhower PREFERED to be addressed as General instead of Mr. President or President. You don't know what you're talking about. All of his contemporaries including Nixon, DeGaulle, Kennedy, etc. generally refered to him as General Eisenhower rather than President Eisenhower. It kills me that people now for some reason seem to think that they are smarter than the previous generations.
@bebupalula Eisenhower's genius, and significant contribution to the war effort, was his ability to hold the Supreme Allied Command together. Holding the Americans, the British, and the Russians together was not easy, but he did, and someone else in that position might not have done as well. For a military commander on the field, however, my vote is for George Patton.
They actually were not due to receive those benefits until I believe the 40s, obviously it was not handled great but your wrong in saying they were promised the benefits at that time.
@andrelebaron The man was a giant among Giants and pretty much is one of the few people who can safely lay claim to stopping the Nazi threat for ever compared to him most modern presidents look small
Eisenhower couldn't hold a military rank while serving as president, so he had to resign as General of the Army. When he left the presidency, he requested and Congress approved of him being recommissioned as a 5-star General of the Army. He wanted to die a soldier.
