Broken Britain - Retail Rot in Evesham, Cotswolds.
buymeacoffee.c...
The gradual decline of its town center. In recent years, Evesham has witnessed a troubling trend: the closure of local businesses, boarded-up shops, and the hollowing out of its once bustling high street. This phenomenon is not unique to Evesham; it's a story echoed in towns and cities across the UK, emblematic of the broader challenges facing traditional retail in the digital age.
Out-of-town shopping centers have played a significant role in the demise of Evesham's town center. These sprawling retail complexes, often offering ample parking and a wide array of stores, have drawn shoppers away from the traditional high street. With big-name brands and convenient amenities, it's no wonder consumers are lured to these retail behemoths, leaving the town center struggling to compete.
But perhaps the most significant blow to Evesham's high street has come from the rise of online shopping giants like Amazon and eBay. In an era of unparalleled convenience, consumers can browse, purchase, and receive goods without ever setting foot outside their homes. While this may be a boon for shoppers, it spells disaster for local businesses unable to match the scale and efficiency of online retailers.
The consequences of this shift are evident throughout Evesham. Once vibrant storefronts now stand empty, their windows covered in grime and neglect. Where families once strolled, now there are only echoes of footsteps on deserted pavements. The heart of the town, once a hub of activity and commerce, now beats faintly, if at all.
The death of Evesham's high street is not just a matter of economic decline; it's a symptom of a deeper malaise. It reflects a society in flux, where community bonds are fraying, and individualism reigns supreme. In the rush for progress and efficiency, we have sacrificed something vital - the soul of our towns and cities.
Yet, amidst the desolation, there are glimmers of hope. Community groups and local initiatives are working tirelessly to revitalize Evesham's town center, breathing new life into old spaces and fostering a sense of belonging. From pop-up markets to artisanal boutiques, these efforts serve as a reminder that the spirit of community is not easily extinguished.
As we bear witness to the decline of Evesham's high street, we are compelled to confront difficult questions about the future of our urban landscapes. How do we strike a balance between progress and preservation? Can we reimagine our town centers as vibrant hubs of activity once more? And, perhaps most importantly, what role do we, as consumers and citizens, play in shaping the destiny of our communities?
Join us as we explore the untold story of Evesham, a town grappling with the challenges of modernity and the enduring quest for identity and belonging. Together, let us chart a path forward, one that honors the past while embracing the possibilities of the future. The fate of Evesham hangs in the balance - will we rise to the occasion, or will we allow the death of the high street to be etched in stone?
Evesham, a picturesque market town in Worcestershire, England, boasts a rich history dating back over a thousand years. Its story is intertwined with significant events in English history. Founded as a Saxon settlement, it flourished in the Middle Ages, renowned for its abbey, which was one of the wealthiest in England until its dissolution in 1540 during the Reformation. The abbey's ruins remain a prominent landmark, offering a glimpse into its former grandeur.
Evesham played a pivotal role in the 13th century Battle of Evesham, a decisive conflict in the Second Barons' War. Here, Simon de Montfort, rebel leader against King Henry III, was defeated, solidifying the monarchy's power. This battle shaped the course of English politics and is commemorated annually through the Evesham Battle reenactment.
During the Industrial Revolution, Evesham embraced agricultural and industrial advancements, particularly in market gardening and the cultivation of fruits and vegetables. The town became known for its orchards and asparagus fields, earning it the title "the Vale of Evesham."
In the 20th century, Evesham experienced further development and expansion, becoming a hub for technology and manufacturing. The town's economy diversified, incorporating electronics, automotive, and food processing industries.
Today, Evesham blends its historical charm with modern amenities. Visitors can explore its medieval streets, visit heritage sites like the Almonry Museum, or enjoy the natural beauty of the River Avon. Evesham's vibrant community, cultural events, and scenic surroundings continue to attract residents and tourists alike, preserving its legacy as a quintessential English market town with a rich and varied history.

EDIT: Evesham is in Worcestshire - not Gloucestershire, where I live. I didn't realise the obvious schoolboy error until a few days in to being uploaded. Apologies to any locals who may have spat their dinner out in disgust! 🤣 Thanks to @Dinger154 for the gentle nudge.

I used to live in Evesham between 2013-2019. As Eastern European imigrant, who came in for a better life I gotta say it was a nice place to be at first. There were decent charity shops, pubs. Walking around the town on a day off was a fantastic experience. I used to spend few hours a week wondering around. At the end of my residence there it felt like the town is dying. No older people to be seen around. Job market was dead. People around working mainly low skilled jobs, mainly food warehouses and factories around. UK as a whole is in some sort of economy crysis while brits still think they live in a empire. There is hint of nostalgia seeing the town again. Live long Evesham

I lived in Evesham from 1997 to 2005, and this is a very fair reflection of the town centre. Wychavon DC are the main culprits - they approved four out of town shopping centres, kept the car parking charges in place and have done nothing to revitalise the town centre over the last 20 years whilst shops have moved to the retail parks. The "plan" that the moron from Wychavon DC mentions has not been funded and is purely an aspirational goal... I personally feel the local authority have washed their hands of Evesham and are concentrating on the nicer towns they control (Pershore and Droitwich Spa). Thanks for the video, depressing as it is!

@splinterbyrd what happened to shopping for fun in our town centres? Take wolverhampton for example. Queen Street, city centre. Loads of boarded up shops. What do the council do? Commission an artist to paint a picture of a gangster with gold teeth on one of them. 'To make wolverhampton an exciting place to visit.' People with money want to live and shop as far away from criminal activity as they can - not embrace it!

Almost every struggling town in the UK has the same issues with regard to druggies and aggressive begging, so it's no wonder retail parks are THRIVING. Retail parks are perfect places for families to park (for free) and to circumvent the bad behaviour and anti-Britain vibes, that our towns centres have become.

So sad; visited Evesham with my sons the other week as we lived there when they were kids for nearly 10 years. We were shocked to see the decline & the empty shopping centre, leaking, drab & deserted. I never understood why the council allowed such a beautiful riverside town to slide like this. I come from Henley on Thames & lived in Marlow - both lovely riverside towns but they’re thriving. Evesham has or could have all that Marlow offers. Just feel that Evesham is a huge missed opportunity; next to the wealthy, touristy Cotswolds - it can’t just be about money/funding?! It’s almost as if when the council or town planners turned down the likes of Debenhams & M&S many years ago (though there was an M&S Food briefly) they wanted to keep the town ‘down’. Now it’s almost too far gone. Strange attitudes & strategy. I heard the owners of the shopping centre were far too out of touch & greedy with the rents going back years. And that it mattered not to them if shops were empty or not. And now they are all empty. It’s a tragic waste of a historic & potentially pretty riverside town in a great area.

Great thoughts. I think the problem may be nearby towns like Stratford and Cheltenham just saw the problems coming earlier and addressed them in time. Stratford is probably a bad example as they are always tourist rich because of the Shakespeare connection.

I quite like Evesham. I used to live in Coventry and passed through it regularly. It was nice to stop off for a break and walk around. It's history was mainly agricultural with a lot of fruit, veg and flower farming around. Like all towns, changes in the publics behaviour, both shopping and leisure, has negatively effected town centre shopping. I'm afraid the writing is on the wall for retail.

The other big problem is the agro involved in either owning and using a car or trying to use public transport. I mean even the stupid 20mph zones contribute towards the sucking of the enjoyment out of travelling. If you don't enjoy something then you will avoid it. This is basic psychology.

You have presented a collection of interviews and not once explained the cuts to every council in the country of over 50% in real terms under Tory governance for the last 14 years. You have also failed to explain that the Tories equally cap council tax rises to under 5 percent. It has everything to do with direct government policy. A typical example; Nottingham’s Government Revenue Support Grant in 2013 was £127 million. For 2024, it is £31 million. This is repeated throughout the country. It’s good to present the actual factual context rather than just people giving an ‘opinion’ about what they think has occurred. The state of Britain belongs to every single Tory voter of the last 30 years. More recently 131 billion was spent by Tories through COVID, the largest spend in Europe by some considerable measure, whilst delivering one of its worst outcomes. The transfer of that colossal amount of public money into private hands is now being felt in its aftermath, alongside the decades of enormous real term council cuts. The Tories are now naturally looking to the working class to repay their COVID feasting with the lowest fall in real wage growth and living standards in our lifetimes. Add to this their suicidal Brexit designed to send Britain headfirst in the race to the bottom and you have the disaster that Britain now is.

Eventually some Chinese , Arabic millionaire will buy all these shopping areas. Sometimes privatising areas with ideas from overseas investors is the answer. The mentality of British people in charge of councils that's what the problem is. Many industries, Markets in the UK function badly when you just put a British person in charge then many British go and protest saying foreigners take all the jobs. Nowadays when you just put British people in charge of councils and businesses you just get poor services. It is a real fact ! The rent of these places have come down because landlords are not making money. The solution is millionaires from of overseas to buy all these places then employ people from the UK. That's how rich football clubs in the UK operate. They rely on overseas management that's why things work well in football !

I think the main reason high streets have died is out of town shopping centres. I'm 75 from Teesside. When I was growing up towns like Middlesbrough, Redcar, Stockton were full of small independent shops but then The Metro Center at Gateshead opened and later Teesside Park, quickly things changed. In Redcar there was an electrical store called Birkbeck's, founded in the year I was born. Out of town shopping took over and it closed in 2008. You can't blame people for preferring the large out of town chain shops. If you want a new washer they may have 100 to chose from where Birkbeck's had say 10. My cousin and her husband owned a fruit and veg shop in the village of Wheathampstead employing 3 people. The week the out of town Tescos opened their takings dropped by more than 50%. They had to sack the staff and run it on their own but had to close the following year.

As we all now know this is the ‘new’ post covidian UK. I live in Hampshire and all the surrounding towns that once made for a nice day out are done. Chichester, Fareham, Petersfield etc are closed boarded up shops and cafes, taken over with a few charity shops and low grade secondhand tech stores, streets full of litter and drunks and druggies. The sense of malice is palpable. Congratulations WEF, bring on the new republic of North Korea.

The key to it is out-of-town big box shopping centres with free parking. Get rid of those, or the parking fees, and the town centre comes back to life. My local town centre has no competition from the out-of-town malls and it's thriving despite parking fees. Evesham sadly is in the shadow of Stratford and Cheltenham which are where the tourists go. It's a pretty town centre by the look of it but nothing much to attract tourists.

Now in a self fulfilling cycle, largely due to the demographics of people who live there and are moving there and the people who are leaving. retail is over the sooner people and towns understand this the better. it went through a 40 year bonanza funded on cheap money and people having access to credit. that gold rush is over. councils bet everything on black and built shopping malls and turned their town centres into retail parks. It’s finished. The intellectual heavyweights who run our local councils also built out of town shopping centres not realising what impact this would have. every town in the land was competing against one another, thinking that the retail boom would never end. You need to grasp the nettle and get rid of zone two retail and only have retail in the very centre in a small zone one. And levelling up money or grants should be used to relocate profitable retail businesses to the town centre to release zone two buildings back to residential. A change in the law to help such businesses break from leases and bursaries for the deserted landlords as an incentive for them to re-purpose the abandoned retail units in zones two and three.. Councils need to stop charging eye watering business rates. They are part of the problem. Towns need to be about enterprise once more not just bloody retail?! theatres, restaurants, bars, solicitors, accountants light manufacturing, veterinary, surgeons, doctors cottage, hospitals, administrative centres, civic services, etc all the things that got crammed out of town centres by bloody retail. There are generations of people who have grown up now thinking that a town centre is about retail and nothing more. And councils need to wake up and impose some planning and proactively remind us of what they’re here for. The state of some shop signage is a disgrace all of which does not help. if you want a nice town, you have to get involved and stop crap signage being splattered everywhere which drags the entire tone of an entire town down. You need to MANAGE things?!

High rates did I hear? Well… I heard that a certain previous owner of the Riverside shopping centre put the rates up so high that it was not viable to do business in there (3 times higher than Regent Arcade in Cheltenham!). But the owners didn’t care! Their back - hand insurance policies were paying them out on the empty units anyway as they are a huge insurance investment organisation! Upper rants of AXA I believe? Strange how they sold it quick sharp when people and media started to cotton on!! And yep! They did this all over the country! Combine the above with the development of the periphery shopping centres has rung the town centre like a dry sponge!! Makes you wonder who owns the outskirt retail sites & profits from those premises? Unfortunately this country is a layer cake! Monopolised and co-Run by the global elite who operate outside of law or financial jurisdiction!!
@scumdeluxe

@johngriffith6991

Yes the rates are extortionate in there. Used to be £5500 for maintenance fees per shop per year. Back when Clintons was open they waited almost a year to get 4 lights replaced. Back half of shop was dark. Later discovered the owners(still current owners) had 1 man doing the maintenance for something like 15 shopping centers. Also UK Business Tax laws allows the owners to claim the potential rent of an empty shop as a tax write off. So....makes one wonder how many shops are closed in the other shopping centers they own?

Evesham was just building itself up with M&S in that shopping arcade, then the 2000s recession hit. M&S moved out. Sadly there was not the focus put on the town centre, which in other places like Pershore enabled them to weather the storm. Evesham centre went into decline and the out of town shops, plus Evesham Country Park (The Valley) took customers to their doors. Free parking too. It's a great pity as the town has such a beautiful riverside walk, gardens, play areas which are not fully marketed to draw in. Years ago I did a FB post how sad the town was, and filth and litter. I was like the new messiah - "How can you help us?". When you have that huge shopping arcade insured against empty units, there's no incentive to get people in. Now it looks like it's falling apart. A long time ago the rumour was to rebuild it to a care home. What the actual centre needs, Like many other towns, is permissions for shop conversions back to homes, to bring life, restaurants, and required facilities back into the centre of town. You've shown the worst of the town. There are so many positives however. But that doesn't undermine what is required to bring the town back from the ashes
