On the morning of 21st April 1918, Rittmeister Manfred Von Richthofen of Jagdgeschwader (Jasta) 11, the famous Red Baron, was shot down after flying low over the Somme. Initially taking off with 8 other Fokker Dr.Is on a routine interception sortie against two Australian RE8s, Richthofen later became engaged in a dogfight against 209 Squadron RAF over Sailly-le-sec. During the dogfight, Captain Roy Brown who was leading 209 SQN saw friend and novice pilot Lieutenant Wilfred May being followed to ground level by Richthofen’s red triplane. As Brown dove to intervene, Richthofen received significant ground fire from Australian positions as he followed May past Vaux-sur-Somme. A single bullet almost certainly fired by Sergeant Cedric Popkin (24th Machine Gun Company, 11th Brigade, 4th Australian Division) fatally wounded Richthofen who soon crashed in a field near the Sainte Colette brickworks.

Von Richthofen’s last victory was over 2/Lt. David Greswolde Lewis on 20 April. Although Lewis was badly burnt, he survived the war as a POW. When I was a young child my father used to fly out of Charles Prince airport in Zimbabwe (then Rhodesia). Lewis was a regular at the flying club bar that was built inside a retired Constellation airliner. I was very young then, early 1970s, and have only the vaguest of memories of Lewis, but do remember that he was “the Red Baron’s” last kill. There had been a biographic movie on Richthofen released in 1971 and I was fascinated with him and was thus very impressed with Lewis. Incidentally my father is now 81 and continues to fly his own Vans RV6A on a very regular basis.

Excellent presentation. My Grandfather; Jack Treacy: was a pilot in No 3 AFC, and a pallbearer at the funeral (in the photo he is the back bearer, face obscured, on the right coffin side). He was present when Von R's body was bought in and photographs were taken. He always maintained Australian gunners bought down the Fokker, as is stated here.

In fact, even Capt. Brown himself was dismissive about the claim, considering the trajectory of the bullet that brought Richthofen down. He even stated that his only intention was to drive off Richthofen and provide a window for May to escape. Hence, saving him from becoming another statistic.

Wrong. Brown claimed a victory over an all red Fokker Triplane. Its in his after action report.

Wolfram Von Richthofen later became an officer in the 1930's Luftwaffe and rose to the rank of Generalfieldmarshal . He was forced into retirement in 1944 because he had developed a brain tumor . He died in American captivity in July of 1945.

Wop May would survive the war with 15 confirmed victories and another 5 probable. He would eclipse Brown in fame in Canada after the war (not that Brown ever pursued fame) becoming a famous bush pilot. Wop's story is worth checking out for those interested.

Great video. Fun fact: the aluminum chair from Richtofen’s plane now sits in a glass case in the RCMI, Toronto.

Bravo for quality details of the aircraft involved. Nice to see Dr 425/17 in realistic colouring and markings. Often incorrectly depicted as bright red or scarlet. Some arguments persist regarding the shade of red but I think you have it as close as possible, based on existing souvenir pieces. Many thanks 👍🏼

Well done, just the facts with good graphics. What was Richthofen doing out on the periphery of the fight? There is no mention of him during the fur ball of the fight itself. Lt. May a novice, was instructed to stay high and observe. When a single German aircraft presented itself he dived and fired on it. He pursued the aircraft and found himself surrounded by enemy aircraft where upon he turned his aircraft into a vertical turn and let loose with both guns at everything around him thus jamming them. (these are LT. Mays own words). He then dived to get away from the fight. It was during this dive that Richthofen fired at him and he continued to dive with the object of running for home. Whilst May was considered a novice pilot on the front line he had very good training in Canada before that, his inexperience was in dog fighting. My contention is that the Baron made an error pouncing on him in the belief that May couldn't fly very well. May proved him wrong by taking constant evasive action at low altitude. I think that this circumstance frustrated Richthofen causing him to become target fixated. My contention is that the Baron took many of his kills by waiting for the weakest to emerge and then taking the kill.

My grandfather fought in WW1 and was on the Western Front in the general area where the incident took place and said afterwards news spread very quickly among the Aussie diggers that one of their gunners had shot the "Red Baron" down.

Richthofen’s cousin, bring a novice pilot was told to keep away from any developing action. As shown, Richthofen went after May following the attack on his cousin. Richthofen broke his own rules of air combat, that of target fixation. Richthofen was known to be significantly battle fatigued and depressed by April 1818, through loss of so many comrades.

Another fantastic video of the day’s event so long ago!! Fun Fact,, Manfred was killed in action near the village of “ Corbie” which happens to be my Family’s last name!! I intend to visit some day!! ❤❤ Manfred wanted to confirm his last kill, he was due to be on rotation back home, pressure from his Mother, and higher up in the Command structure who didn’t want their highest honored hero to be killed at the front!!

There's also speculation that Richthofen received a bullet under his chin as his death photo shows something on par with this. However, I don't think that this was reported in his autopsy.

If Richtofen had been shot down by a British, French or American it would heralded no doubt. Brown was Canadian so of course ground fire got him so say all the people that weren't there. Brown wasnt a glory hound and was not interested in debating it then or since. In any case he is offically credited. Im tired or reading how its now an article of faith that Richtofen was downed by ground fire. Btw there was never a proper autopsy done on Richtofens body and the plane was also not examined properly before being stripped completely.
