27:04 - If you remember previous episode, Demiurge is the intellectual one, he was the one who helped Cocytus come up with an idea why they shouldn't just kill all the lizards. Ainz looked at Demiruge with the look "Did you suggest this ? / Did you gave him this idea?" to which he answered "No" with his head, and Ainz literally says "Brilliant idea, Cocytus" after that.

So a few things to explain about the whole arc. 1. The reason he attacked the Lizardmen in the first place is because unlike in Yggdrasil, when he casts spells to create powerful undead (i.e. not your standard skeleton), in this world it requires bodies so he was essentially trying to collect bodies to keep Nazarick's power up. 2. The second reason was to see if the NPC characters were capable of learning and getting stronger or if they were essentially stuck as they were created when they entered this world. Demiurge was put in the role of defense manager in the game but Cocytus was basically put as a floor boss and nothing else so this was to see if Cocytus could learn how to manage units. The reason near the end when he looked to Demi and Demi shook his head was basically asking if Demi gave Cocytus the idea of rezzing the lizardmen to which Demi said no showing growth on Cocytus' part because when Cocytus requested to spare the lizardmen earlier he didn't have a reason and Demi had to help him with an explanation. 3. In regards to "Karma", it's essentially the Yggdrasil equivalent of dnd's alignment system (i.e. lawful good, chaotic neutral, neutral good, etc). and are as follows for each guardian: Albedo: -500 karma (extremely evil) Demiurge: -500 karma (extremely evil) Cocytus: +50 Karma (neutral) Shalltear: -450 Karma (extremely evil) Aura : -100 Karma (neutral evil) Mare: -100 Karma (neutral evil) Sebas : +300 Karma (Good) Pandora's Actor: -50 (Neutral) Victim: +1 (Neutral) Gargantua: 0 (Neutral) 4. If you found it hard to see what was happening to the Lizardmen... get ready cause there are more stories like that on their way. I said it before and I'll say it again.... IN OVERLORD WE ARE NOT WATCHING THE GOOD GUYS.

I think that Ainz is more complex than just good guy or bad guy, which is part of what makes Overlord so interesting. He's definitely in the role of antagonist to the new world, but he has people and dreams he loves and wants to save, too. I think the genius of the story comes from transporting not just himself, but his whole guild base into the new world so he has people from his past to protect. He doesn't have to develop Stockholm syndrome for some new kingdom he happened by chance to land in to drive the plot forward. Ainz is likeable and relatable, and he is also merciless and willing to commit atrocities. Overlord is a work of art that makes you look inward to understand your own reactions to it in a way few other anime have done.

17:18 Humm I don't know who said Demiurge was reasonable or good. Demiurge is one of the most Evil NPCs in Nazarick. He has Karma rating of -500 and was made in the image of Satan. He loves torturing people and being efficient, and he is very intelligent. He his caring and gentle with the people of Nazarick, but to outsiders he's an absolute evil deity. If you're looking for Neutral/Good NPCs in Nazarick, you're looking at : the Dark Elf Twins, Sebas, Victim, Kyouhukou, Pestonya (dog maid), CZ2128 Delta, Yuri Alpha & Entoma (3 Pleiades battle maids) & Albedo's older sister. Ainz, Demiurge, Shalltear and Albedo have karma ratings around -400/-500.

Speaking about karma, Demiurge is not at all neutral, he's as evil as evil gets. Cocytus is one of maybe five characters in all of Nazarick with positive karma (that we know a level for), the others being Victim (barely), Alpha, Delta, and Sebas (he's the goodest boy)

both pestonya and sebas have the highest positive karma with 300. nigredo is also similar high, i dun think we know how high her karma is, but it might be potentially higher, as said idun know if is the case its. at least 200 or 300 tho it seems.

He is on the "tie babies around your waist as a shield" level of moustache twirling villainy, truly extreme evil.

I think you confused Demiurge and Sebas. Sebas has the highest Karma in Nazarick because his creator "Touch Me" was a hero or like to play a Hero. Ains mentioned Sebas reminded him a lot of Touch Me in how they act and that he even looks like IRL Touch Me. Touch Me was Ainz closet friend in Nazarick so you can expect he feels a certian way about Sebas.

Clarification time: 1) The chair incident: Ainz Ooal Gown is a lot lighter than you think. While he is pretty tall he is only bones, so he’s much lighter than you would expect. Shalltear Bloodfallen is one of the strongest NPCs with a very high strength score. Needless to say, her heavy breaths weren’t from physical exhaustion. 2) Karma: yeah a lot of the NPC from Nazarick are on the evil side. The Karma system goes from -500 to +500. Demiurge while polite and enjoys polite conversation, his karma is -500 (extremely evil). Hence his disregard for lessor races, often seeing them as no more than beasts. Meanwhile Aura and Mare are both -100 (Neutral evil). Cocytus is +50 (Neutral). There are more good NPCs which will be introduced later. Trivia time: Cocytus comes from the last layer of hell in the book Dante’s Inferno, which was a frozen lake where traitors were frozen in ice. Which likely inspired his ice theme. Also the layer Cocytus guards is one big ice lake which Ainz is using as a glorified freezer for bodies before turning them into undead. If Cocytus personally seems one dimensional, there is a good reason for this. His creator “Warrior Takemikazuchi” wasn’t very creative. He was the type of player who named his sword Takemikazuchi MK 1. Then when he upgraded it, he called the upgraded one Takemikazuchi MK 2 and so on. At the end of season 1, in the battle against Shalltear, Ainz uses the Takemikazuchi MK 8. Needless to say that Warrior Takemikazuchi wasn’t very creative. The author uses this to have Cocytus one dimensional so as the books go on he can develop the character more. A lot of the development in the later books unfortunately didn’t make it to the anime but you still get some.

@@josephcrickmore53019 Those are some poor arguments. White armor = good and black armor = bad? What about Kirito from SAO, he wears black most of the time, he bad? Abel Walker from Mashle wears white, he good? Knight vs Necro isn't a very strong argument either for good vs evil, as there's plenty of stuff out with evil knights and good necromancers. "One is alone while the other has a guild base with him." So am I wrong because Ainz has more friends than Arc does? That makes no sense. Please don't rebuttal my point with "No, this guy is different, his shirt is a different color!", arguing semantics don't ever go anywhere. My point was that "MC being skeleton" does not equal "MC is bad" as, according to Luke, everyone in comments was saying. Arc is a literal example of the opposite, a Skeleton MC whom is a good guy. The origins of the skeletal form for both characters is also, the exact same. Luke isn't in the wrong for assuming Ainz was a good guy, after a full season of being a pretty good guy. Ainz is an antihero, and while he's never claimed to be a good guy, he's also never claimed to be a bad guy.

27:05 ainz was checking on demiurge if he summoned crush, or instructed cocytus to do so, but cocytus decided to do so on his own without asking demiurge or someone else first - cocytus has improved and shown own initiative to do stuff - the stuff that ainz was testing on him to see if they can learn and act past their original basic yggdrasile programming and background story. also its worth mentioning how ainz commented on that all the npcs "seem" to have taken on aspects of their various creators from the game without them having such remarks specificity in their background stories, and it feels like he is still interacting with them / sees them as the childrens of those creators friends.

I mean, if you pay attention, you will notice that Ainz never helped anyone out of simple good will, it was always with a profit in mind. Also, The lizardmen are like lvl 25 (top) and Cocytus is lvl 100, obviously they never even had a chance to put up a decent fight.☺ And about the world Ainz comes from, this was literally a futuristic dystopia in which almost the entire world population are corporate slaves, Ainz lost his parents when he was very young and has always been alone, only working and eventually playing Yggdrassil where he met the only friends he had in life. He had even gotten used to seeing dead children in the streets every day, whether due to hunger or pollution, since the world is literally rotten. So it is normal that he grew up being a cold, pragmatic and insensitive guy, being undead was just the finishing touch.😵

In the 1st episode when you first meet cocyutus Ains says that he's the definition of a "Warrior", so he'll have honor, chivalry, respect, etc. Even for his enemies.

The thing I love about this anime and it brings up the question "what makes a group good or bad?" There are lots of "good guys" that kill others and do immoral things and morals are all relative to the society. Im pretty sure you've finished the current anime seasons so the discussion with the prince about what he'd do to provide for the ones he loves is very fitting

yeah it kinda sucks that the author is so incredibly good at creating the world and characters, and writing interesting scenarios, but because we are following what is essentially the leader of the alien invasion with far superior magic technology some of those characters we get attached to meet very bad ends. 27:00 Demi shook his head because he was not the one who told Cocytus to make the preparations for his request. Cocytus did it all on his own. 32:25 He is just slurring his words cause he’s a little out of it after being resurrected

I give you credit. I'm new to your channel but I watch a ton of overlord reactions and almost all of them don't figure out that Ainz is the villain until half way through the 3rd season so I was shocke when you figured it out early in the 2nd so I give you a lot of credit

Demiurgos only shook his head to say that it wasn't his idea. That's why Ainz was glad that Cocytus grew and could plan ahead. Also Ainz doesn't care about world domination. He was just joking and Demiurgos misunderstood him, thinking he was serious. Either way, each and every episode Albedo really shows that she is best girl in Overlord.

Demiurge is one of the most logical, rational thinking nps of Nazerick. He's definitely got an extremely negative karma score though and is pretty evil, actually. Cocytus was designed by a dude who loved bushido and samurai stuff and is one of the few characters with a positive karma score. TouchMe was the good guy player of the guild, the guy who saved Ains and invited him to the guild in the first place. Most of the guild liked to roleplay as villains, so TouchMe and Demiurge's creator often argued because they were playing polar opposites. Momonga became the guild leader to help mediate between the two.

also you need to think of this in terms of RPG when you are lvl 100 you have so much armor that even lvl 70 mobs would have issues dealing significant damage (damage that could overcome automatic recovery) now these lizarmen are probably around the 20s, they don't even plink (like in wow if you were max lvl and tuffed and went to early areas the mobs attacks would go "missed, missed, blocked, missed" that's basically what is happening xD

If i remember right the lizardmen chiefs are all in the high teens level range (maybe low 20s for the strongest) and Cocytus is level 100. To put it in some perspective even a 10 level difference is a drastically overwhelming difference in most cases.

FYI : if you overlook the situation. the declaration made by ainz to lizardman is make the lizardman better, from dislike each other to joining allies and in the end, even there are many sacrifice but lizardman is save and united under Nazarick.

@@katxiii3660IIRC only Zenberu and Sharyusu were revived after Zaryusu due to their worth as a Monk with Combat Skills and a Cleric with Holy Magic. Not sure about the Scout Chief but the Armored Chief reappears in Mass of the Dead while all the other low level Lizardman that died under Cocytus's Frost Aura all turned to ash when Ains tried to revive them due to their low levels.

If you remember that Albedo and Demiurge was talking about "Abelion Sheep", which they only described as Two-legged sheep native to that world, it actually referring to Human they captured and forced to breed as a livestock (Ainz didn't know about this FYI, he thought it's literally a "Sheep") Those "Abelion Sheep" bone is used to made that "Skeleton Throne". Also the battle between Lizardmen and Cocytus, when Cocytus asked them to show him their "Brilliance", Cocytus was planning to show Ainz that the Lizardmen has a value when they're alive more than when they're dead and turned into Zombie, so he was expecting them to put a decent fight so that Ainz would show them mercy. Though he still have his pride (and need to redeem his previous failure), so he don't want to lose on purpose or hold back either, that's why he came fully equipped when he's already more than a match even without those weapons.

As far as the resurrection of other lizard-men this does end up occurring but is skipped over in the anime there will come a time you see them in the background but there's no exposition of when or why they were brought back. Essentially what happens is Ains has Zaryusu and the others assist in teaching Hamuske and a Death Knight Martial Arts skills to see if they can be learned by others including summons as well as the possibility of he or his guardians can learn abilities outside of the video games level up system. there are more details of this and things like it in the novel but very rarely are they even referenced in the show.

at around 27:20, Ainz was looking at Demiurge to see if it was his idea. Demiurge shook his head to deny it, showing that it was Cocytus acting on his own without help, which Ainz liked.

He was looking to Demiurge to see if he put him up to the idea and Demiurge denied so with his head shaking. This means that Cocytus progressed as a being from the current events and came to the point he could came up with his own ideas and wishes.

I also find that the best overpowered protagonist stories find some way to show fear of failure and ratchet up the tension despite the power of the protagonist. I think part of the tension in Overlord is the fear of how far Ainz will go, how much he will sacrifice to achieve his goal. While the other part is if he somehow retains his humanity, will he lose the loyalty and respect of the creations he loves? Even if Ainz 'wins' at the end of the series (whenever that happens), will it be worth it?

If you like Cocytus, then you'll really love the last few episodes of Season 4! You get to see him in action again. And I agree with you about his honourable warrior personality - it's really oddly wholesome in the midst of all the deathmongers Ainz is surrounded by.

To fix the misunderstanding, Demiurge is the smartest one in Nazarick, not the most reasonable one. Well, I guess it depends on who is doing the reasoning. If we are talking about a human who wants to survive, their best bet is Sebas Tian who is currently the most good willed resident of Nazarick.

first about the head shaking: in the conversation cocytus showed that he was forseeing ainz reation by bringing crush lulu to the base before starting the conversation. Ainz was surprised and checked if demiurge was behind this, because he helped cocytus before about the benefits of sparing the lizardmen. But he didn't help cocytus so he shaked his head to signalize this. seconds: as brutal as it sounds this war with this outcome was the best that could happen to the lizardmen. They were in a war beween the tribes because they suffered from hunger some time ago and their numbers were about to revover while they didn't change their style of living. just zaryusu gained a little knowledge like the fishfarm but his words mean nothing because he's a 'traveler'. in the end the tribal war would surely have happen again. now after ainz war all tribes are united and the needed resources and knowledge can be given to them by cocytus.

I mean, this was more of a test for Cocytus and our big warrior passed it. Yeah, he had to fail at least once but Ains at 27:00 wanted confirmation of one simple thing. Did he ask for advice of any1 about what he did? Demi answered with a negative nod. That means that he grew up as an individual being like what Ains said at the start of season 2. Yes, Ains gives out orders but the guardians have to consider their options and think for themselves about whether to carry out those orders or not and if they do so then think outside of the box if need be. Keep in mind, that Ains at this point sees the guardians as the "children" of his friends and is trying to help them improve as beings. That is also why he considers if those changes can even overwrite their "programming" when they were created. Remember back in season 1 when Momonga changed Albedo's setting to be in love to his character? He is also questioning if that can happen during this learning curve.

Before rule (without fear) Ains had to make them submit ... like truly submit. Not just surrender without accepting their loss, and bite back later on. On top of that he had to make a show to try to bait the one who brainwashed Shalltear (not knowing it was an accident).

The lizard has slurred speech as a result of Ressurection Sickness, a common anti-abuse mechanic in MMORPG games that the fictional "Yggdrasil" was based on. Another common trope is that it costs experience points to ressurrect, which is why he had a level drop.

I just wanted to point out that while Ainz did save the village at the start... he literally did so by massacring all the attacking soldiers. So even though it was a good deed, it showed that he was basically fine with killing humans, from the get-go.

When people are resurrected by ainz's magic they are in a state of confusion for a few weeks as their brain needs some time to catch back up which is why zaryusu was slurring his words after coming back

I think you'll be positively surprised. The next arc is more fun, not light hearted but there's some stuff coming so you can look forward to that. Also, Resurrection cost levels in Yggdrasil, how that translates in the new world will be explained a little bit more towards the end of this season and the start of the next if i remember it so don't worry about not understanding it yet.

The tragedy of Ainz is that he basically wants two things: Find his friends from the game and make the creatures/people they made together for the guild, aka the npcs, happy. The PROBLEM is that all the minions in the guild are monstrous races and Most are full on evil with hobbies like eating people, torturing people and killing people because they where playing up the whole "we're an evil guild of monsters" angle with their roleplay concepts and so too for the npc's they created. And Ainz mentioned back in episode 3 when he killed the human knights... it makes him feel Nothing, logically he can know that this or that is wrong or right... But emotionally? Nothing matters to him except his goals. So his slippery slide down the slope of morality is quite inevitable, though he does try to err on the side of being a reasonable evil overlord, trying to teach his minions to think for themselves and so on and he is genuinely good to his people. I do agree that ainz did some decent stuff in the early episodes, saving that village and such... but its important to note that at the time he ONLY did that because Sebas was in the room with him and as Sebas is lawful good (his creator was lord touch me who, in spite of playing a monstrous character, was a goody two shoes type) and he did not want to disappoint his favorite butler. He later improvised himself some information gathering activities but it should be quite obvious that Ainz tends to fly by the seat of his pants and pretend it was all just as planned afterwards. His minions of course tend to support this view out of blind adoration so it works out.

Ainz-sama main goal is 1. Find his Friends (if there) and 2. Protect the great Tomb by all means. anything else is just optional to him. well 90% of the NPCs see people as lesser beings(animals, bugs, etc) so Demiurge's pov he was not wrong lol. also, Shallchair is Bi and has a very strong necrophilia streak in her so Ainz-sama is the perfect man to her ^^ there are Char cards at the end of every novel or DVD/blu-ray set you can see the class/race and karma of people if want to see that detail info.

Time for some lizard culture lore that isn't immediate address in the anime The lizardmen collectively had what was called their 4 great tresures. As far as I can remember we only see 3 of them but first is Frost Pain the ice sword we see. Not much more to add to it that we haven't seen in the anime tbh. Next is the bone armor that one chief was wearing. It's an armor that take a penalty to the wearer that saps them of most of their intelligence. The chief was so smart among lizardmen that he kept most of his mental faculties albeit struggled to voice his thoughts which is why he sounds like he struggles to get words out. In return the armor strenthens based on either the amount of intelligence taken from the 1 lizard or every wielder so far (don't remember which) which makes his armor about as strong as adamantite. Then lastly is the most powerful artifact of their culture of all... the infinite alcohol barrel. It literally is just a barrel that has infinite booze although rather light and low quality. And for minor spoilers that only barely affects the anime going forward yes his brother and Genburu get resurrected (not too sure about the other chiefs but I want to say that they were)

The fact that Ains is the villain is demonstrated on multiple occasions in season 1. He feels nothing when killing humans (and kills quite a few), every friendly relationship he builds is for the sake of Nazarik, not the humans, he openly admits to Clementine that depending on the circumstances, he would have done something similar to what she did, he outright killed the adventurers who followed him when he was going to deal with Shalltear (the elder lich who attacks the lizardmen is one of those adventurers btw, specifically the one who's head got bashed in by Mare and you can see the dent still), and when he finds the apothecary boy he says he would have liked to take him back to Nazarik for experimentation if it wasn't for the fact that he had to keep up the charade of Momon. Also, Ains does ressurrect the other chiefs. You'll see them later.

Something else to consider about Ainz's disposition is that he has a tiny bit of imposter syndrome. He is somewhat afraid of being found out by the others. He is making all of this up as he goes along and often gets forced into ... unfortunate situations by the antics of the others. Even so, while not malicious, he is not at all altruistic.
