Tom Tilley's Hack investigation reveals the story of two women who thought bushfire bunkers might save their lives if they faced another Black Saturday. The bunkers they bought turned into underground swimming pools and now they're fighting the suppliers for their money back. The story also looks at the do-it-yourself bunkers that also have authorities extremely concerned.

People build 'unofficial' bunkers because the costs of approved bunkers are prohibitive for a lot of people.

That last shelter was the most fire proof, best shelter of the lot. $14K - fantastic value. Just get a sump pump.

A sump pump with battery / inverter , because when you have a bush fire , you lose electricity .. But you see ... ? Its the lack of thinking like yours thats the problem. . Also , like the first chap , you should have oxygen back up

This is actually true. I studied the 1918 Moose Lake fire my grandparents were in. It was the greatest fire in history but few have heard of it as the media rarely mentions it. Many died in root cellars and even a few in wells. The problem is, a big fire produces a lot of CO which is heavier than air and sinks into any hole below ground. You won't burn but will die from CO which I suppose is much less painful than burning to death. Most people who survived the Moose Lake fire got into lakes, rivers and creeks. My grandma stood in Moose Lake along with hundreds of people, cats, dogs, deer, bear, moose, wolves and horses. Animals didn't attack or fear people or each other. They feared only one enemy that night that armageddon fire! Underground shelters are good for tornados but not fires. A swimming pool would probably be more likely to save you in a big fire than a shelter. It would also be more fun till the fire happens.
@Steve211Ucdhihifvshi
@Steve211Ucdhihifvshi 7 лет назад
a swimming pool is too small. To give you an example the heat from an full on fire like this one was causing trees to instantly combust. You cant breath the air because its too hot, the smoke is the least of your worries. in reality the firefighter above somewhere said it right, Get out its the only sure fire way.

Its fire proof not water proof. Clearly the place will rott if its full of water. The door also did its job by closing tightly. What do u want? A door that's well oiled and shuts with a puff of wind. I tell you id rather have any form of shelter, than be cooked alive in your own home.
@tomhickman1006

These are fixable, need to have all the shipping container under a meter of earth or cement. A independant oxygen source with the new non metal tanks that avoid rust inside tanks, with several hours of air per person. The shelter that is flooded needs to be pumped out and needs a sump pump the other problems can be repaired.Take care of your investment your life may depend on it. This isn't some you just forget about until you need it.

In a sealed chamber, the carbon dioxide buildup will kill you before oxygen depletion is an issue. I think the best solution in the case of fire bunkers is simply to make it large. You only have to be sealed inside for a short time.

So, with my luck, I'd build a legendary bunker, make it down before the fire reached my property, survive the fire ... And then I'd get bitten by a famously poisonous Australian snake or spider that wiggled it's way inside at some point. It'll be a legendary coffin.

You can do a lot by trimming back the brush and trimming the lower branches up off the ground. The is stuff here on you tube about Urban/ Wildland interface property firesafety. Get the info. 12v solar panel and sump pumps will get the water out.

the first one was actually really good low buget solution i remember one time i tried to cook potatos by placing them in a pit 20 cm pit under a camp fire afther 3 h of me continuously feeding the fire they were mildly warm as far as oxygen the cheapest solution that works the best and is always full would be haveing a air compresor hooked up to a very large air tank 24/7 the problem with large fires is they produce co2 and consume oxygen
@inumushin
@inumushin Год назад
Thanks for the air compressor idea.. get creative.. e.g. some car tires recently filled with new air, might taste like shit but you could survive on it..

The bunkers looked sound to me. Concrete two chambered structure with a significant earth shield as insulation. A sump pump should be installed, and a sealant applied to the inside of the unit. If they wanted they should install a French drain on both sides to move water away from the structure. It seems the ladies were not good consumers and bought out of fear. Not blaming them, but they didn't do their research on installing underground structures. These water issues are well known and mitigated with proper drainage.

digging a decent sized pond and having some breathing apparatus around would probably do the job. As the fire comes, get in the pond and get your BA on until it passes. When the world is not on fire you have a nice pond too. Trouble is on Oz the pond would probably fill up with dangerous animals
@Chewligan
@Chewligan 7 лет назад
Although the fireproofshelter company was totally wrong to mislead those people I think it could be a salvageable structure and be made waterproof and upgraded to a high spec. Keep the original structure and dig out all sides to expose it all, pump out the water & let it dry out completely over a few weeks and then seal with waterproofing and more concrete and replace with thicker gauge high quality airtight doors (ditch any wood of course) - consider installing a sump pump. It looks like the original shelter has been placed in a nice, tree free spot too - seems a pity to waste it !!! Don't forget it could still be used as a bomb shelter too.

Could pump the water into a buried water tank , so you have water for drinking after filtration, and for putting out fires , and even growing vegies for survival. That being said , i would never use wood for a fire door.

You'd want an oxygen source. Tanks and masks probably, but you'd need a hell of a supply because fire can stay hot a long time, you would need to spend more than just a couple hours in there. It's a sealed system so the C02 build up would kill you, or you'd roast. Water can be pumped out technically. I threw out some hot coals from my wood stove. 18 hours later they were still red hot. IN THE SNOW. now imagine a forest fire's coals.

I do feel bad for the last two women, but as soon as the words "we can't LEGALLY sell you a Personal Fire Shelter" were mentioned, they should have been running away. I'm not sure why anyone would commit $14k to a purchase like this before they were 100% satisfied that it was legal and complied with the relevant codes/standards. Which, of course, in no way absolves the dodgy bastards that sold them.

The money won't matter at that point. Never rely on another human to provide security for you and your family. Learn bushcraft and stay aware of your surrounds and be prepared, that is about the best thing you can do no matter what. Anything else like selling products should be looked at as a money grab.

One thing I will have to say the woman was stupid to buy the shelter after that sales pitch. It's commonsense to not buy a product that claims to be certified, but the salesman says it's not especially if your paying them 48,000 of Aussie Dollars. I would also ask for references, and basically do some dang background checks plus research on the company. Basically they got legally swindled due to them NOT thinking. Also even if they got swindled they should have bought a pump before the flooding got that bad and hire someone to reseal it if possible. Stupid......

In my part of the world, Colorado USA, our fire brigades push mitigation -- clear a 30 metre radius around your home, use flameproof materials in the build. Additionally, keep good quality garden hoses with good nozzles in front and back on standby but not charged in extreme fire weather.
@Steve211Ucdhihifvshi
@Steve211Ucdhihifvshi 7 лет назад
30metres is nowhere near enough to stop or help in a bushfire like the black saturday ones. Roads were melted away, trees explode and send sparks and embers thru the air like a blizzard. The embers get blown in anywhere and the roaring scorching winds that the fire generates whips up a blast furnace style enviroment. Garden hoses wont do shit not enough pressure or heat proofing. Ive been thru one of these fires as a kid and the fire missed our house but completely incinerated our nextdoor neighbours newer firesafe house. it melted the water pipes in the ground and long before the fire got close to our place it cut off the powerlines as it burnt the poles to the ground. Not to mention the smoke was so thick that you couldnt clearly see a way to get out. So you have no mains power, no water, minimal vision and as the fire approaches the heat is so intense that even at great distances materials melt or just combust.
