This is a 1958 episode of Death Valley Days called "Rough and Ready" and explains the founding of Rough and Ready, CA in September 1849, by Absalom Austin Townsend during the California gold rush.
Seems these are historical as much as entertaining. Great that way, your being entertained at the same time your getting a history lesson.Excellent stuff thanks for posting and all your hard work.
You are 100% correct. The lady that did most of the research for these episodes did an excellent job. They are historically accurate based on the information she had at that time.
S6, Ep8 7 Dec. 1957 Rough and Ready During the administration of president Zachary Taylor, the United States levied a tax on the mines in California. Outraged by this tax, and feeling it amounts to taxation without representation, miners in the small town of Rough and Ready, California, led by a prominent businessman named Bundage, decide to secede from the union and create the Republic of Rough and Ready with Bundage as president. The fact that 'absolute power corrupts absolutely' quickly becomes evident as Bundage becomes a dictator.
The flag flown at the end is incorrect for the time period, and has never been an official US flag; it has six rows of stars (5-6-5-5-6-6), with a total of 33 stars. In 1850, the US flag had 30 stars: five rows of six stars. The 33-star US flag was used 1859-1861, with five rows of six stars. This flag was used because Stock Footage was used from an earlier episode.
to T. Townsend: the audio signal is so faint on this video that it is unwatchable. This is a problem on many, many RU-vid videos, though the audio on advertisements is always plenty loud. Aren't you aware of this before you post videos?? Please re-post your videos with greatly boosted audio signal. Death Valley Days is one of my very favorites.
Thank you for the feedback. I have not had any audio complaints on this video and it sounds fine on my computer but I will see if I can boost the default volume when it loads. Thanks again for the feedback!
@@ttownsend3252 Thanks for your response. I posted a similar complaint about weak audio on another RU-vid channel and got 14 likes, so I am sure there are many experiencing the same problem. It is characteristic of YouTlube videos and movies on many channels and I would think RU-vid is the source of the problem and that RU-vid should fix it. Like I said, the advertisements are always plenty loud, but very faint audio on channel content. Thank you for your efforts to boost the audio. We treasure quality content on RU-vid, especially movies and TV from the Golden Age, and we want to enjoy them with life-size volume. Thanks again.
