I like this version better. I punched up the video and left it unstabilized; I also added an energetic soundtrack.
I shot this with a GoPro Hero2 camera mounted on the driver's side of a 2012 Rubicon. The camera mounts are affixed permanently to the forward-most edge of the roof and the leading edge of the front bumper next to the winch. The GoPro just clips in and out of the mounts. The GoPro was set to 1080p 30fps wide. Shooting really wide helps to mitigate the effects of rolling shutter on rough road surfaces. The GoPro doesn't shoot stabilized video so I did the image stabilization in AfterEffects. You can see some stabilization artifacts, but I don't think they hurt the viewing experience too much. The shots from the bumper suffer a lot more from the rough road so I mostly used shots from the roof.
This is another must-do road in Death Valley, best lighting is in the morning so the sun is mostly behind you. The road is washboarded gravel and can be rough in spots. Once you get up high, you have to watch out for washouts. High clearance is handy but not always needed. Likewise with 4WD. You can run this trail in 4-HI, no need at all for 4-LO. I wouldn't take a sedan or minivan on this road (but I have seen it done). IMHO this is the best way to enter the park, the trail starts about 6 miles west of Beatty NV and is one-way into the park. If you're nervous about having to back up off-road you'll have no worries on this trail.
