Debate: Are DEI Mandates for University Faculties a Bad Idea?

In recent years, America’s colleges and universities have begun to adopt Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion, or DEI, as a core value. As part of this push, colleges include criteria of DEI expectations in tenure standards, and getting hired or promoted requires personal, detailed statements. Are these statements, created with good intentions, devaluing merit-based evaluation and replacing viewpoint diversity with a “loyalty oath”? Those who agree say the evaluation rubrics demerit professors who may not embrace a specific agenda, which can harm freedom of speech and academic freedom. Those who disagree argue it’s fair for faculty to be asked about DEI when those values are embedded in a school’s mission. They insist that these statements are not intended to push an ideological viewpoint, but to focus on and reward actions.
With this background, we debate the question: Are DEI Mandates for University Faculties a Bad Idea?
Arguing Yes: Randall L. Kennedy, Professor at Harvard Law School
Arguing No: Brian Soucek, Law Professor and Chancellor's Fellow at University of California, Davis
Emmy award-winning journalist John Donvan moderates

In my country, we don't assume a policy will always be implemented by the best of society . If the policy only works when implemented with the best of intentions, it is flawed. We have a lot of corruption and this rational has often been our saving grace.

Rote recitation of political values has no place in job applications for faculty at institutions of higher education.

I am no fan of DEI, but these DEI statements are not rote recitation.

They do this in business too and a lot of well qualified people have been passed over for jobs that less qualified people have been given.

It’s been done since 2020 when it got mandated. But there was a mandate in this country for decades not to hire blacks and no one had a problem with that….one not to let Black people live in your neighborhoods and no one had a problem with that either. Don’t pretend legally that that wasn’t true because we know underneath it all it was. It even went on to the point where you didn’t even want Black people buried in your cemeteries. You cannot claim being fair to everyone is a way of swaying things, when everything was swayed the other way for hundreds of years it’s hypocritical

I think that when I listen to this debate, I bristle at the word Mandate. This to me isn't a suggestion that the schools could be opting for, but an official order or commission to do something. That is the definition of mandate that I found. I have a son that was interested in pursuing a medical career. We talked to medical professionals about recommendations when looking at what would help him to get into medical school. The first was a grade point of A+. That's pretty understanding because we want the best of the best when it comes to our health. The next few things were 1: Do community work. 2: Travel internationally. He was told that without these things, it was unlikely he'd ever be able to specialize in the field he was looking to pursue. Was it mandated that he do all these things? No. But it was pretty clear that without these three things, his chances were extremely limited. This does not speak to what is being suggested to educators, however, it does speak to the fact that there are expectations in all fields we pursue whether we agree with them or not. I'm just not okay with it bing mandated.

I agree about protecting students from restrictions on free thought but there has not be any free thinking on campuses for years.

To say DEI statements are akin to teacher statements is to say promoting DEI is as central to the mission of a college or university as teaching. If that’s the case, then anyone who submits a DEI statement disagreeing with DEI would basically be like applying to be a teacher while submitting a statement that saying you don’t believe in teaching. Obviously if you consider DEI to be as important to the reason to exist for a university or college as teaching, then anyone who questions DEI will be systematically rejected.

Academic freedom is a practice that you pledge to at the university. Should that not be the case?

I feel they put the mandate in because years ago they had actual gentlemen and ladies, and in some instances it was assumed that you would have some morals, and you would have some principles. But then we ran into a man who did not want to handover power in the highest office in this country. Because there is no mandates, it is assumed that he would do it on principle and with. morality. Once he chose not to do that. somethings that were a Gentlemens promise, it now has to be enforced, especially in this day and age where we have found that there are a lot of people that still don’t have any principles and morals.. I also think the man who is against it, fails to realize what diverse means it means all of us, even him, it doesn’t mean what he think it means, excluding him.

They have to write an essay on their DEI innitiatives. People/Companies are selling the DEI statements!! There are books on how to write a good DEI statement!! And what do you think the DEI departments do all day? They are making very good money. I saw $250,000 & even $450,000 salaries. And they are demanding your full support & dedication to DEI plans: "Reflecting and committing to paper what your goals, actions, and plans around diversity, equity, and inclusion are just one of the ways in which you can advance these efforts. Writing a DEI statement can promote further reflection on the strategies you use in your teaching, exhibit how you engage in DEI efforts through your service, research and mentorship, and reveal opportunities for commitment that you might want to explore more.....". It's pure propaganda. It's what they make people do China & USSR... "How to promote Communism at work, & how you can apply it in your personal life today & in the future".

Well, look what is happening to Jews on the College campuses. Jewish students are blaming DEI. Apparently they are White & Successful. So abuse against Jews is apparently Ok. And it's definitely coming from DEI departments & Studies.
