In a lengthy debate in Parliament on Oct 16, an urgent Bill to amend the Insurance Act was passed, enabling the government to block the acquisition of a controlling stake in Income Insurance by German insurer Allianz.
Workers’ Party MP Jamus Lim and Progress Singapore Party Non-Constituency MP Leong Mun Wai questioned why the Monetary Authority of Singapore shared further details of the proposed transaction and Income’s capital reduction plan with the Ministry of Culture, Community and Youth only after the Aug 6 sitting.
