In this series, "Debating Al-Ghazali", I critically engage the popular narrative about Islamic intellectual history propagated nowadays by secularists in Pakistan. In episode 1, I analyze the sources that popularize this narrative. In episode 2, I will discuss Al-Ghazali's philosophy in detail. In episode 3, I will show the state of philosophy and science in the post-Ghazalian era.

In this discussion - why is it not mentioned that the Western Crusades began in the lifetime of Imam Al Ghazali and these wars almost destroyed the Islamic civilization. And then the next blow was the Mongol invasions.

I highly suggest that you create a video on how to properly fact-check and research any given topic, as I have noticed that many Pakistanis do not frequently absorb knowledge from credible, peer-reviewed research papers or dissertations. This video will help those who want to gain factual, evidence-based knowledge and will provide them with credible sources.

Wonderful work. Unfortunately, public discourse about religion in Pakistan is around 200 years behind the current state of research in religious studies in the Western academy. No one takes the "Al-Ghazali destroyed science" narrative seriously in Islamic Studies scholarship anymore. However, unfortunately, people will listen to Hoodboy and Uzma Rumi instead of reading Frank Grifel, Ebrahim Moosa etc. I miss your twitter account. Thank you for trying to enlighten the masses. May Allah bless you.

Honestly, its not just public discourse is outdated, it is also sidelining traditional islamic scholarship. This has resulted in the perception that ulema are jahil/unparh etc. and therefore not taken seriously especially amongst secular/liberal class. If tomorrow any westerner says the same thing, then we all accept it but if any of our ulema say something then we start to ridicule/ignore it. Unfortunately, this is colonial mindset is the bane of our society.

This video reminded me of Pericles, a Greek politician whose primary rhetorical tool was presenting airtight arguments. If we desire to achieve this, we have to be factually correct and rely on authentic references, which sadly is often lacking here in Pakistan. Your video is a great introduction to Ghazali's philosophy, but I did observe that it went a little bit off tangent by explaining in depth the importance of fact-checking, researching, and questioning the authenticity of the information we consume. Thank you for sharing this video and going through the effort to compile sources for your arguments, I look forward to the next chapters, well done Shershah ♥

I just watched the second episode and then this first one, I cannot wait for the 3rd episode! It is actually so frustrating for me aswell to find wrong references or facts given by actual scholars or doctors in the field! It is way more common than we think and it is hard coming across Pakistani content creators who give references for their claims. You are one of the first ever Pakistani creators I have come across to do research properly and present the facts with evidences! I am eager to see your channel grow. Keep it up!

A huge takeway from this video for us (apart from the fact that self proclaimed intellectuals are promoting lies) is that the scientists of the Islamic Golden Age were infact also the mullahs of that time, and the mullahs were well reas scientists. Currently im reading a book where im learning about the Shadhili order of Sufism (non fiction: Sea without Shores by Nuh Ha Mim Keller) where the first two characters introduced ( Sheikh Abdurrehman al Shaghouri and Sheikh Abdul Wakil) were both mystics HOWEVER the both of them were well versed in the Quran, Hadith, Fiqh, Islanic Jurisprudence and were skeptics and free thinkers. While if i see any "spiritual" person today, they will likely reject thr rules and commands of Quran and Hadith and put their personal relationship with God above the rules laid out. Or vice versa a religious people will entirely close their minds to only leave room for thr Quran and Hadith and notbing else. It just goes to show that you cant be religious without being a true well-read intellectual and vice versa. Thank you again for the wonderful videos. I love the short 15-20 minute videos by you because they are easily digestible

Good work brother, but I also have a genuine question why some scholars discard science, philosophy and rational thinking and they proudly term people as "gumrah ho gaya". How this thinking produced in the minds of people,and secondly i have come across people (right wing) who declare Ibn Sina, Al Farabi, Ibn Rushd and their contemporaries as non muslim.I don't get it. I think there is a great impact of our today's scholars(not all) to make people far from intellect and for me I think this is a mojor cause why we are backward in term of modern technology and education. I'm not from left group but a question? Love from India❤

@_titanslayer_
@_titanslayer_ Месяц назад
The next episode is about al-Ghazali’s philosophy and his idea of causality. Ibn Sina also believed that fire is not the sufficient cause for burning the cotton but only an efficient cause (secondary causality). So even according to him fire doesn’t have an inherent and enclosed potency to cause fire. Fire is intermediate cause and it is itself an effect of a preceding cause, going all the way back to The First (al-awwal) ie God. God is the first and sufficient cause for every phenomenon. Ref: Koca, Islam, Causality and Freedom, ch.2 (p. 40-60) More details in the upcoming video.

Very Informative video. Just one issue here, Left is a very broad term and contains very different and opposing intellectual currents. The group of people whom you are criticizing (Hoodbhoy, Book Buddy, Muzammil etc) are better characterized by the word liberal with their beliefs based on orientalism. Left also includes peole like Eqbal Ahmed, Faiz Ahmed Faiz etc. You can't club such intellectuals with the naive group of Hoodbhoy, Muzammil etc

Nice video. Although I have a question. AT 13:41 You mention that Al Kindi was actually flogged but the reason seems a bit vague. You mentioned it was because of some jealousy. But why did the Caliph Mutawakkil actually flog him? What I mean to say is that he won't simply flog him because of some jealousy. What was he actually accused of? Thank you.
@_titanslayer_
@_titanslayer_ Месяц назад
He was flogged because of the Musa brothers plotted against him. I am going to share the full story from the primary sources. This was shared with me by Prof. Adamson. (you can see this same passage here as well: historyofphilosophy.net/al-kindi). Here is the whole story (from the biographical report of Ibn ʾAbī ʾUṣaybiʿa, translated in the volume I did with Peter Pormann). Muḥammad and Aḥmad, the Banū Mūsā, in the time of Mutawakkil [reg.847-61], conspired against all who discussed prognostics. They sent Sind ibn ʿAlī away to the City of Peace [i.e., Baghdad] and separated him from Mutawakkil. And they hatched a plot against al-Kindī so that Mutawakkil had him beaten. They went to his house and took all his books, and set these aside in a storehouse that they called the ‘Kindīya’. They were able to do so because al-Mutawakkil despised moving instruments. Mutawakkil commissioned these two to oversee the digging the canal called al-Ǧaʿfarī, and they entrusted the job to Aḥmad ibn Kaṯīr al-Furġānī, who had built the new measuring instrument for the Nile in Egypt. The latter’s knowledge was greater than his success, for hardly had he completed the task, [it became apparent that] he committed a mistake at the mouth of the canal known as al-Ǧaʿfarī: he had made it lower than the rest, so that [the water] that submersed the mouth did not flow into the rest of the canal. Al-Muḥammad and Aḥmad, the Banū Mūsā, defended the work that he had undertaken. Mutawakkil, however, required them to go quickly and take up the matter with [Sind ibn ʿAlī]. Al-Mutawakkil promptly summoned Sind ibn ʿAlī back from Baghdad, who duly appeared. (8) Once the Banū Mūsā confirmed that Sind ibn ʿAlī had left, they were ripe for destruction (ʾaynaʿā bi-l-halkati), and despaired of their lives. Al-Mutawakkil summoned Sind and said to him, ‘every time these two scoundrels speak ill of someone, it is always aimed at you. These two have wasted a great deal of my money on the canal. Go out to the canal to inspect it and see what is wrong. I have sworn by my life that if things stand as they have been described to me, then I will crucify them [sc. the Banū Mūsā] on its shores.’ Muḥammad and Aḥmad, the Banū Mūsā, got wind of all of this. As he [Sind] went out with them, Muḥammad ibn Mūsā said to him, ‘ʾAbū Ṭayyib, a gentleman does not bear a grudge. We beg for your help [in saving] our lives, which are so dear to us. We do not deny that we did wrong, but confession removes commission, so absolve us, as you will.’ Sind said to them, ‘By God, surely you know the enmity and estrangement between myself and al-Kindī, but it is the truth that I follow. Was it kind of you to take his books? By God, your reputation will not be restored until you return his books to him.’ So Muḥammad ibn Mūsā proceeded to bring the books to him. al-Kindī acknowledged receipt of the books in full, with a note saying that they have all been delivered. (10) [Sind] said, ‘it is incumbent upon me to offer you protection, since you have returned this man’s books. You have protection in knowledge, which we must keep between us: the mistake in this canal will be hidden for four months, thanks to the rise of the Tigris. And the astrologers (al-ḥussāb) agree that Mutawakkil will not live that long. I will immediately inform him that you made no mistake regarding the canal, so you may live. If the astrologers are right then we three will escape; but if they are wrong, then he will live long enough for the Tigris to recede, and he will attack all three of us.’ Muḥammad and Aḥmad thanked him for this, and he let them sneak away. He went to al-Mutawakkil and said to him, ‘they made no mistake.’ The Tigris rose and the water flowed into the canal, and hid its true state. Al-Mutawakkil was killed after two months and Muḥammad and Aḥmad were saved, after confronting such a terrifying fate.

The narrative is prevalent in popular media not in academia. My aim is to bridge the gap between scholarships and the publci discourse when it comes Islamic intellectual history so that these myths are put in their place.
